Lower than average weight of Baby B

Hi - I had my 20 week ultrasound today.  While Baby A is doing great and does not show any signs of concern.  Yet with Baby B, they detected a lower than average birth weight.  Baby B is weighing 11 ounces when the "average" is 12.7 or so...  My blood tests and screenings are good...  The doctor stated that Baby B's structure (head, abdomen, femur, etc) looks great.  But the low weight of the baby is something that we will have to keep an eye on Baby B because this can mean a chromosome or syndrome issue...

Needless to say, I am worried and stressed...

Anyone have any input on this?  Has this happened to anyone?  Has a doctor told you that one baby has lower than desired weight than the average?

Thanks fin advance or any input...

Re: Lower than average weight of Baby B

  • Yes, I was told Baby B was smaller at growth 30 wk ultrasound which made me a nervous wreck searching online for growth/weight stories. I was told I needed weekly nst and bpp tests to check the babies. Happy to report that Thurs ultrasound (35 wks) showed them measuring on target and Baby B grew lots. Good luck!!!

  • Non stress test (NST) is ordered by Ob to check if the mother has any contractions and checking babies movements, they put a belt on mother for 20-30 mins. They are checking if the babies are in distress, their heart rates have to elevate at least twice in 20 min period. The BPP is ordered by Ob when there's growth concerns. It's basically a growth ultrasound and also check their cords and blood flow. The Dr explained to me if one baby started being too small compared to the other, they'd induce immediately. Also if one baby suddenly had cord issues (cord around neck, not receiving enough oxygen, etc) they'd induce. These tests indicate if the babies are continuing to grow and be safe, there's times when they need to be out already and require attention - according to Dr. I've read that these tests are most commonly requested by Ob for mothers of multiples around 30 weeks-forward.

  • Our baby A was always so much smaller than B and was measured in the 10% right before delivery (B was 25%). A was born more than 10oz bigger then they had guessed and at 4 months outweighs his brother by almost 2 pounds!

  • I just had my anatomy scan with Mfm as well and one was 10 oz and the other was 12. The doctor didn't say anything about the one being under weight. The measuring is very temperamental And those are just averages anyway. Sounds like you are in good hands with doctors that will keep a close eye! With my first baby she always measured 2 weeks behind and she just turned out to be a petite little girl! Good luck with everything!!
  • Are they fraternal twins? If so, I wouldn't worry so much. My twins had a significant growth discordance starting at week 24. I ended up on bedrest at 30 weeks and got 2 steroid shots then just in case they needed to be delivered early.

@ 35 weeks, we expected baby B (boy) to weigh 6.5 lbs and Baby A (girl) to weigh 5.5 lbs. They were born 1 week later. He weighed 6lbs 9.4oz! She was a peanut at only 5lbs. He is consistently now 4-5 lbs bigger than her even though they are on the same schedule for everything.

I know it is more serious if they are identical twins.

    Good luck!
