Incredibly Annoying Insomnia

Has anyone else experienced this? I am just about 6 and a half weeks and this is the one persistent, annoying symptom that I consistently have had since getting my BFP. I'm an early riser to begin with, but lately, even if I force myself to stay up till midnight, I'm still up at 3 or 4 in the morning and can't fall back asleep, despite being exhausted. Anyone else have this? Anyone have tips for dealing with it?

Re: Incredibly Annoying Insomnia

  • I have the opposite issue. I can never fall asleep at night then can't get myself out of bed in the morning.

  • Mindfulness meditation and progressive muscle relaxation always works for me.

  • Have had sleeping issues on and off for the past years but just when I was going through a better sleep period I became pregnant and boom now my sleep is all messed up again. Especially the first 2-3 weeks after my BFP I had trouble falling asleep and then when I finally did I'd wake up pretty quickly again and would lay awake for a long time before falling asleep again, rinse and repeat. Having to get up regularly to go to the bathroom didn't help either, nor did having a queesy stomach during the night!
It's getting slightly less bad now (8w); I still have to get up once or twice a night but don't lay awake as long afterwards luckily, and I now eat a cracker before bed and drink some soja milk halfway the night to keep my stomach happy(-ish).
Next to feeling tired from too little proper sleep, I also experience extreme fatigue (some days worse then others).. building a baby in your tummy apperently is hard work! :) Definitely worth it though!
  • Right there with you, sister. I'm up at 3am every day. I'll be glad when I can sleep through the night again (and so will my husband)!!!
  • I've had some degree of insomnia with all three of my pregnancies. It's cruel...we need our sleep more than ever now before the baby comes. I'm usually so exhausted that I fall asleep fine (although the past few nights it's taken me some time to fall asleep), but I wake up around 1am and can't fall back asleep until 4am. Then my wonderful early riser of a son wakes me up at 5am, and the cycle continues. Between the fatigue, lack of sleep, and nausea I've pretty much felt like crap the past 2 weeks.....I am SO looking forward to 2nd tri when I've felt great. Hang in there ladies!

  • I, too, have horrible insomnia!  If it is any consolation, I do think that it gets a little bit better. With my last pregnancy, it only lasted for a couple of weeks, and I think it was over by week 8 or 9.  Some of my friends had similar experiences, with it only lasting briefly.  Hang in there :)
  • Oh winderslane I hope you are right... With my first two I was exhausted and slept great... With this one I'm exhausted and toss and turn all night unable to sleep. It's making me very grumpy!
  • I had the same, if I managed a couple of hours a night then I was grateful. Had to go to the doctors in the end to get a note for work. In the middle of doing half days only and it's really helping. I think I was getting so frustrated because I was so tired, but then couldn't sleep but having to work all day struggling to stay awake. Vicious cycle. It seems to be wearing off now after a month.
