Glucose and Rhogam shot have to be same day?!

WTF?

I am so confused.
My OB's office is saying I have to have my RH shot within 24 to 48 hours of "labs" and that I should have my glucose test done the morning of my appointment.

Why does that matter? Can someone clue me in?

  • My guess would be for billing. But if you're concerned about it give them a call and ask why. Sounds like something they could easily answer for you.

  • That sounds weird.  I don't think that was how mine were with DD but I don't really remember.
  • It's because in order to give the RhoGam shot they need a blood type on file within a certain time frame. Has nothing to do with the glucose testing I am just guessing they are doing your typeing lab when they draw your blood for your glucose test. Even though your blood type obviously won't change it is standard practice in hospitals and dr offices to require a fresh blood type on file in order to give the rhoGam. Just like a double check and by doing it with your glucose jabs it saves you from having to get labs done all over again.
  • My previous 2 pregnancies I did not follow that format. Previously, I went 2 different days for 2 different things (Blood-typing and rhogam one day, glucose another day).

This pregnancy the front desk said "why waste your time coming twice?" and scheduled me for a looooong day there. (I go to hospital on 1st floor for blood-type, rhogam... then upstairs for blood draw and glucose drink, then ultrasound, then appointment with OBGYN, then another blood draw.)

I don't mind either way. I will make sure my kindle/phone are charged and I bring snacks for after my hour glucose because my OB's office is rarely ontime and i'll be hungry.

Did your office give you a reason for scheduling that way? If you don't want to spend all that time there, you can always say you only get X time off work or X time with child care and go back seperate times.

  • Mine made it sound like because I had to wait an hour for the glucose test, I might as well use that hour to get my shot. I didn't ask though.
  • That's exactly what I'm having to do at my next appointment. I really have no idea why though
  • I know you have to have the Rogam in that time limit because of blood typing. Maybe they just figure they can knock it out at once without having to stick you twice.

  • Plus it's probably just a billing thing and trying to cut down on appointments.

  • My first pregnancy they did a blood test at the first appointment.  I know I am negative so I will get it at my 28 week appointment I believe, or whatever week it is.
  • Rhogam is a blood bank product so as others have said I think they sometimes require the blood typing done at the same time.

  • Thanks for the replies. I really hate calling or emailing them but I finally caved and emailed the nurse. She said that the Rhogam shot can apparently affect the results of the glucose test so it has to be after. They also need the blood on file as others said, hence why it's done before.

So there's the FYI in case anyone stumbles across this thread later looking for an answer.
  • My next appointment I will have my regular 28 week checkup, have my glucose test, have my rhogam and then wait for the rhogam to process in my system because I had an adverse reaction to it last time. It sucks to be in the hospital all day and going back and forth from place to place, but I would rather get it out of the way all in one day than go back numerous times. Maybe bring a book or a friend along. I plan on being there for a long time lol.
  • I have to have it all in one day too. Yay! Fun!
  • I am taking my glucose test in two weeks and was informed I will be getting my RH shot the same day as well.
I don't remember getting them both the same day with previous pregnancies either. I caaaaaan't wait.
  • Had glucose, and blood test same day (last week). I ready knew I was rh- from first appt, so I knew at 28 weeks I'd be there for Rhogam. Doc did advise me that I needed to get the shot before my next appt (u/s and check up)... tomorrow. So I went yesterday. It's not time sensitive, because honestly your blood type won't change within 24-48 hours, or ever for that matter. Lol.
