Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Will my son need a helmet?

My son is 6 months old, Born July 31, 2014. I was in labor for 42 hours until finally I was rushed in for a c-section. He was stuck in the birth canal for such a long time that when he came out he had a really horrible cone head (see picture below) I've brought up my concerns to his doctor but his doctor said his head will round out on its own but he is now 6 months old and still has a pointy head and his head is flat as a board in the back. He has been sitting on his own for a few weeks now so he's not constantly putting pressure on his head by laying down. He's has had GERD and acid reflux since a newborn so he's always had to sleep on an incline, never flat. I am just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and if intervention with a helmet will be required? Is he too old now for a helmet?
See pictures below and please any response will help!

I can't see your pics either but I can tell you from experience that having a kid in a cranial band (correct term for 'helmet') is really no big deal. My DD1 wore it for 10 weeks from the time she was 6.5mo and her head improved SO MUCH! She was considered a mild/moderate case (she was breech, positionwd funny inside me, favored one side and developed a flat spot, ear rotation etc). I can't inagine NOT getting her banded even for her moderate case!

My DD2 was ALSO breech and was already BORN with a slightly mis-shapen head (she was a lot longer than DD1 and was wedged super funnt inside me). It has corrected itself to a degree but I am fully prepared mentally for another band when she turns 4mo. We would start earlier since we are already monitoring the issue. And the younger they are the faster the treatment goes.

It is not a big deal! There is no shame in it if that's what you're worries about, and it does not bother the baby at all!! Better get it fixed in such a gentle, non invasive way, rather than let it go uncorrected and regret it later.

  • I am a pediatric PT and work with patients that have plagiocephaly (flat head) and torticollis frequently.  You should ask for a referral to a specialist as soon as you can.  We typically refer our patients at 4 months old to be evaluated for a helmet; 4-6 month range is considered optimal.  They will be able to take an image of your child's head and measure to determine if a helmet is necessary.  PM if you have any questions.  Good luck!
