Breech baby - Please share your experience

Little man is still breech at almost 28wks. I know that he has plenty of time to turn, but I am curious to know your experience with a breech baby. Did you end up having a c/s or did you go forward with a vaginal? If vaginal, did you or the baby experience any complications? Did you opt for an external version? If so, what were your results?

I've already googled this and have read many stories. I've also already spoken to my OB. I was just hoping to read more experiences.

Thanks ladies!

Re: Breech baby - Please share your experience

  • Im 31 weeks and in same boat. Ive been under chiro care, do yoga & inversions, and read spinning babies. Just praying babe flips too because C-sect is not what I have in mind. Planning and hoping to birth @ home. GL momma!

  • I vaginally delivered my twins (Twin B being breach) Depends on your doctor. We had no heath risks ect. I was not forced to do a C-Section…. but had to be induced because only two doctors were willing to let me try and they were working back to back.

  • We found out DD was breech at 34 weeks. I immediately started seeing a chiropractor. I also sought out moxabustion and read up on spinningbabies.com.  Within the first few chiro sessions she did flip. It's important that your SI joints are aligned so your round ligaments are even. If they are out of whack one ligament will be tighter and that can keep the baby from being able to move freely.

You can sit in a warm tub and put an ice pack on top of your belly to try and coax them to move.

I would have absolutely tried a version if we were a candidate for it. Thankfully she flipped before that. I would have done everything to not have a c/s.
    This.
DS2 was Frank breech until 34 weeks and then flipped on his own. This baby is also Frank breech and my OB said she isn't going to worry about it until 34 weeks because there is still lots of time and room to baby to flip. If s/he is still breech then we will discuss our options to try to get babe to flip naturally. I've been told by 2 different OBs that Frank breech is the best breech to deliver vaginally because the chance of baby's head getting stuck is significantly less then with a footling breech, BUT (at least my current OB) won't attempt a vaginally breech delivery of any kind unless you're full term. I've never gone full term with my babies so hopefully this baby flips before s/he decides to make an appearance.
  • I will be 31 weeks on Monday. My doctor told me that they will do a c-section if she doesn't turn but that there is still plenty of time. They said they can also try manual manipulation and give me exercises to try.
  • I don't know why they would even tell you your baby is breech at 28 weeks. DS1 was breech at 32 weeks when I started spinning babies (mostly inversion and breech tilt), acupuncture and moxibustion, the Webster technique with a chiropractor, handstand in the pool, sitting on a yoga ball as often as possible, ice packs on top of belly.

I was not a good candidate for a version because of a uterus malformation so I tried everything to try to get baby to turn on his own. My baby turned vertex at 34 weeks until 37 weeks when he flipped back to breech.

I was scheduled for a c-section at 39w6d, but he flipped back to a head down position at 39w1d, and I had to be induced 2 weeks later and had a vaginal delivery.

  • As PP have said checkout spinningbabies.com for some excersises that can help. It's still early so you could start with just some pelvic rocks and sitting cross legged as often as possible.
  • Sorry- not an answer but I don't want to start a whole new thread and I am curious.  How do you know your baby is breech at 28 weeks?  I am 29 weeks and when I had my appointment last week I asked the doctor if she could tell which way baby was facing because I was curious if I was feeling elbows, feet, head or bum (mainly what was where at that moment)? She felt around and said she couldn't tell with my baby and she wouldn't worry about a breach birth for several weeks because baby has plenty of room to turn.
  • Constant kicks in my hips/vagina/butt and a big ole noggin under my right ribs. I asked my OB and she felt around and said breech. I'm not worried yet. I was just looking to hear more experiences :)

I get ultrasounds once a month because I'm high risk for preterm labour d/t having 2 preemies, one being from a placental abruption. Besides that, I get lots of kicks down and to the side and a big head that rolls back and forth right under my rib cage.
  • My doctor hasn't said anything about baby's position but I constantly feel hiccups down low so I'm pretty sure he has flipped. I'm definitely planning to ask at my appointment this week - now I'm super curious!
  • My baby has been breech for awhile, I'm also 28 (almost 29 weeks), and while I know it's early, I'm being super paranoid. My midwife told me, she said she could feel where the head was, and I just knew it too, I can feel the hardness about my belly button. We are planning a home birth so a c/s is not in my plans. I unfortunately have a broken ankle so yoga is out, but I'm going to start seeing a Chiro and do lots of cat/cowl, sitting on a balance ball, etc. Good luck to you!

  • My son was breach. We attempted to flip him but I was already 36 weeks along and he was too big. It ended up costing us $900 and still needed c-section. My experience with my c-section was really good though. After experiencing vaginal birth and c-section, the c/s was actually an easier recovery! Don't be scared of c-section but also as you said, your little one has time to flip. :)
  • I'm currently 31 weeks and on the same boat. This is my first baby and want to avoid a C/S as much as possible. As of today, I started doing some exercises that I hope are helpful on spinningbabies.com. OB told me there's plenty of time for baby to flip. I'm remaining positive :-)
  • DS was breech until 36 weeks. He flipped on his own.

    Always in my heart: BFP 9/6/12 - M/C 9/25/12
  • My son was breech from 24 weeks and never moved, had a c/s at 38 weeks and had the best relaxed csec ever healed within 3 weeks out doing everyday things by day 7. I'm hoping this little girl stays breech. I'm 28 weeks.
  • They told me and the Hubs our baby girl was breeched at 28 weeks too by feeling around while finding her heartbeat. Our OB told us not to worry till our 34-36 week apt and if she hadn't flipped by then we would talk about C-section
  • At my 30 week appointment I was told that the baby was breach. They said there was no reason to worry until about 36 weeks and that they where only telling me if I wanted to know his position. I have gestational diabetes so I get sonograms to check babies growth once a month. At that time my baby weighed 3lbs 10oz and I was told he was in the 54 percentile
  • I was in the hospital at almost 30 weeks. The the baby started as breech and with in a very short period of time flipped to head down. The dr can always try to turn the baby. Google exercises you can do.

  • I found at my 28 week u/s that the baby was breech and I also have a low placenta. The doctor didn't say but I read afterwards that this can sometimes cause the baby to be breech as they cannot turn because the placenta is in the way. I had a 30 week doctors appointment today and he still thinks he/she is breech (no u/s) but I have another scan in two weeks to see if the placenta/baby has moved. Has anyone else had an experience with this?
  • I found out that DS was breech at 36 weeks. I tried all the spinning babies techniques and basically spent the last 4 weeks of my pregnancy upside down, tried two versions but each time they tried his heart rate dropped so they thought he was compressing the umbilical cord each time they tried. I had him by scheduled csection 3 days after my due date. I will be seeing a vbac specialist but I'm trying not to get my hopes up too high. There's not a hospital or midwife who delivers complete breech (DS's presentation) so hoping at least that if she breech, she frank breech. Maybe then, my Dr will assist a TOL.

Huh? You don't have to VBAC... Even if she isn't breech then you can still have a RCS.
Not in New Zealand where I am, I was told because I have had a c/s I can have another one. My midwife is fully supportive.

  • I see a chiro now and have since before Christmas. She said sometimes babies just flip and it has nothing to do with chiro. Also, she advised against the ecv due to complications. She knew a woman who had it done 2 days before induction. It was successful. Painful but successful... However when she went in for induction, baby flipped again! She ended up having a csection.
As much as I don't want a csection, if it means a healthy baby at the end of the day, I'm all for it

That is not a complication, more of an inconvenience.

  • Based on everything I've read, if I had a breech situation, I would try some of the free things, but I wouldn't spend any money on attemps on changing baby's position.

I also would not be afraid of a c-section at this point. The natural birth community has built up so much fear around them and it's just not warranted. Trust me, I bought into ALL of it even as soon as a few months ago, but reading actual medical experts now has me trusting their processes.

and, here's a great explanation on epidurals, since, if you do go with a section, they're a good idea! https://theadequatemother.wordpress.com/epidurals/

  • 28 weeks is super early, and I wouldn't even bother thinking about what position the baby is in now.  I mean think of it this way, would YOU really wanna stand on your head for the next 3 months?  Because if he goes into 'proper position' now, that's basically what he's doing.

Start being more concerned 32 weeks plus, but even then, closer to 34ish.  This still gives baby room to move/ adjust if they need to but is closer to date.  I am pretty sure my baby is breech atm (I'm 28 weeks), and I'll likely deliver around 38ish weeks and am not worried...he's active, and constantly rolling and flipping and turning and really, he's just having fun (I guess...his favorite game is kick Mommy in the kidney's)  Anyway, once he gets bigger and runs out of space, he'll likely turn and much later drop.  (Just like his sister before him).

Most babies turn...and then later drop when they are ready.

And if they don't, doctor's still know how to get them out.

  • My last baby was breech until the spot when the dr said it mattered (36w). I had been seeing a chiropractor just before that for hip and back pain, and she did adjustments for the baby being in the breech position too. I think it really helped.
  • And to answer your question, yes I proceeded with a vaginal delivery bc she had turned by then.
