Gestational Diabetea and inducing labor early

This is my first pregnancy and from the beginning I have planned to have an unmedicated natural vaginal birth. Then I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Now my OB is telling me that she wants to induce me no later than 39 weeks. I would prefer to go into labor naturally but if inducing is safer for the baby then that's what I will do. Has anyone else has similar situation. I'm still a bit uncomfortable with the idea of inducing labor.

  • Thank you for reply, my Dr is really great. She just surprised me with the possible inducing. I appreciate the words of encouragement. Its nice to hear that even though you were induced you were able to deliver no pain meds..thanks a bunch

Induction is not always a faster labor. It all depends on how ready your body is prior to induction. I was induced at 37 weeks but I went in 2 cm dilated and 90% effaced. The pitocin triggered more contractions but didn't make me dilate any more. didn't go into active labor until after my water was broke by my doctor. I was in labor 7 hours and pushed for 15 minutes. It doesbt always happen that way. It varies from woman to woman. No two labors are alike
  • I'll be 35 weeks Monday and my Dr had said that by 37 weeks we schedule for induction by 38 weeks. She has me taking Evening Primrose Oil to hopefully help soften my cervix and make it easier. I was nervous at first but now feel a little more confident about being induced. My original plans have kind of flown out the window but I trust Dr to make the right decision for me and my baby. With my numbers being all over the place recently it's so hard to control with medication. That's what made me realize I'd rather stuck it up for early induction over the stress.

  • I'm not a dr or medical professional but If you're measuring good & doing NST's with good results & your sugars remain under control there's no need to induce. I wouldn't stress about it. But do discuss it with your doctor. I went into labor early with my first at 38 weeks- it can happen naturally. Discuss it at your next appointment & then put it in the back of your mind until 39 weeks & discuss it then. :) I wouldn't go longer than 40 weeks but mostly because I'm impatient & I want to meet my son!!!!
  • I had GD with my first (didn't require insulin) and my practice's policy was to induce if baby didn't come by due date. I ended up being induced and honestly it was not a good experience. I pushed for 4 hours (she kept getting stuck), they had to use the vaccum (causing an abrasion on DD) and I had an epi that then tore further ending with a 4th degree tear. My DD ended up weighing 7lbs 10oz. which isn't that big IMO. I wish I had pushed back more and at least given it a few more days b/c I just don't think my body was ready.

I didn't have it with DD2 and went 9 days past my due date, went into labor on my own, but had a much better labor (pushed for 30min, small epi that healed well, etc.). She was 8lbs 2oz.

  • My MD told me that because I have chronic hypertension (very well controlled) and GD (again controlled well with diet) that he would like to have me induced at 39 weeks. I told him that I really would like to try to wait until my body was ready but I would obviously do it if me or my baby would be better off and/ or he seriously recommended it. He told me it is just to prevent any problems that could occur in the last week and he would be comfortable with waiting as long as I come in for nst's and check my bp often at home and notify him of any changes (headaches, swelling, etc) immediately. I think if you have a good talk with your doc and tell him your thoughts and concerns you can come up with something that will work well with the both of you.
  • Thanks for all the comments and support.. I will definitely talk to my OB before making any decesions...I appreciate the feedback.
  • You have to be very careful with diabetes especially if you are having problems controlling. It's not just a danger to you, but diabetes tends to age the placenta faster. It can also cause the baby to have a bowel movement in utero which is very dangerous. Discuss with your ob but also see if you could me with and endocrinologist.

I am type 2 diabetic and have been seeing endo since end of first trimester. I am well controlled but all these possible complications were brought to my attention in the diabetes education classes. I completely understand a women's desire to have intervention free birth but make sur stop have all the information and weigh the pros and cons of both decisions.
