Moving while DH is deployed to have baby

My DH may be deploying for the last months of my pregnancy and the first 6 months after. We are considering moving me back home near family during this time so I'm not alone with two kids. How would this work for Tricare? The closest MTF is 60+ miles away (over an hour) and I know there are providers (off base) that except Tricare within 10 minutes. Would they make me switch to standard? Just trying to figure out the easiest way and I'm not super experienced with his aspect of Tricare. Thanks!

  • I moved home during a deployment from Fort drum to Oregon where there is no military base. I just got switched to tricare west (or whatever region oregon is in) it still covered all the same stuff. We just had to call and notify them of the move.

  • I'm in the same situation and also moving home with family. I was also wondering if they'd make me switch to standard since there's no base nearby??
  • I'm headed home for deployment 3 months after baby is born. Luckily, I'll have access to a base, since my family lives in a Navy town, but I'm curious how BAH is going to work, since Hawaii and Rhode Island are a far cry from each other.

  • They did make me switch but thats because my most local PCM was over 70 miles away for accepting prime. They said I could stay prime if I wanted to wave my travel costs but this just worked out better.

Unfortunately for you, he is still considered stationed wherever you're at and will continue making that BAH rate. Your BAH is directly linked to where he is technically stationed and not where you choose to live.

  • @LadyBlood, that's actually not an unfortunate thing at all and is exactly what I was hoping to hear! We are stationed in Hawaii, but I will be going home to Rhode Island and Hawaii's BAH is over 1000 dollars higher in Hawaii. If it stays Hawaii BAH, I'll be a happy camper!

  • Ooh I thought you were moving to hawaii!! Lol my bad. Yea, you should be able to save a pretty penny while you're in Rhode island!

I moved last month because hubby wouldn't be there. Just have to switch to correct region and find a pcm where you're going and schedule an appt in advance to get a new referral. Good luck
