Preeclampsia Update

So I haven't actually introduced myself, and I apologize, but I have been a lurker since finding out I was pregnant back in July timeframe. Today, at 28w3d I was admitted to the hospital with preeclampsia. I have some symptoms that could classify it as severe I guess, but most are in the mild range. Most people I know or have heard of who have had it, developed it way later in the pregnancy. It's really freaking me out how early and quickly this has come on. Good news though, is my doctor sent me to a different hospital that has a higher level neonatal unit, so that is a little calming, I guess.

I was just wondering if any other March moms out there have this diagnosis yet? Or if anyone has had any experience or successful stories with it.

Update: thank you so much to everyone for their kind words, it is very much appreciated. I had an ultrasound yesterday to see how the baby is looking and if the placenta is still functioning. Looks like the baby weighs 2 pounds 8 ounces which the doctor seemed very happy with. And the placenta seems to be functioning just as it should at this point. Based on high Bp and protein, they have officially categorized me as severe, but we are hoping to just rest it out here at the hospital until the baby can develop more. Both baby and I are being very closely monitored which is very reassuring. Sounds like they will induce somewhere between 32-34 weeks but won't risk me going further. Thank you again to everyone for their stories and support.

I haven't been diagnosed but I'm being closely monitored because I have a kidney condition. I'm at a slightly higher risk, but so far so good.

Sounds like you have good doctors caring for you!

  • My H's step sister was diagnosed with a severe case of preeclampsia back in June at 36 or 37 weeks. She hadn't been feeling very well and developed severe edema out of nowhere. She went to the doctor where he admitted her right then for an emergency C-section. Everything went well and the baby was healthy. They kept mom and baby in the hospital for a week after the birth just to monitor everything. 6 months later everything is great and neither mom nor baby have any issues. I'm sure your doc will monitor so you can get the best treatment and keep you and the baby healthy.

  • No experience. Sorry you're going through this, sending you good vibes.
  • Thanks everyone for the good thoughts and prayers. And to those who have some stories. @Carmar3 your story is very reassuring! I will definitely keep everyone updated. Thanks again everyone!
  • I had it bad enough with my daughter that I had her early but I didn't get it until after 32 weeks. I wish you the best of luck

  • I don't have any experience but will keep you & LO in my thoughts.
  • T&P for you, it sounds like you are receiving very good care. Hopefully pre-e holds off long enough so that baby can grow a little more.
  • No experience, but thoughts and prayers are with you and your baby.
PPD/PPA Mom...it has been super hard, but I'm making it! Slow steps...

Proud VBAC, natural birth, breastfeeding, cloth diapering momma!

  • I had it with dd... They decided to induce me at 36 weeks and dd was perfectly healthy other than jaundice. They kept me in hospital after having her until my blood pressure decreased to a safe level. Try not to stress and focus on the outcome being a positive memorable one. All the best to you and your lo.
  • ^and they continued to do non stress tests and blood work throughout my pregnancy to ensure that dd was doing well. She was 5lbs 8oz at birth. So far I haven't had any BP issues with this pregnancy so at least feel reassured that if you choose to have another lo you may not have any issues. :)

  • I have no experience with this, sorry for the no advice. But I will be keeping you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. I hope pre-e holds off and your baby can stay in a while longer
  • I can't be of any help with the pre-e, but I just wanted to offer support, good thoughts, and prayers, for you and little one.
  • I recently (1/18/2015) delivered my first child early at 32 weeks gestation due to severe preeclampsia. Super scary stuff! Not my ideal experience for our first child but we have such a beautiful newborn son! I was just curious how you are doing now? Have you felt better as time has gone on? How are your BP levels? How's your new baby?
  • No experience but sending my well wishes. Glad they moved you to a hospital with a better NICU. Sounds like you are in good hands. Keep us posted!
  • So glad that it sounds like the LO and you are both okay from your update!

One of my good friends had pre-e and she went into labor at about 35 weeks. Everything with the little guy was fine but they kept her for a week and him for two. 8 months later and you would have never known. Keep your spirits up and take care!!

  • Thoughts and prayers are with you... I had severe pre eclempsia with my last pregnancy and was induced at 36 weeks. Dangerously high BP began at 31 weeks. DD was 5lbs 8oz at birth and other than being jaundice she was perfect and did not need the NICU. So fortunate in that regard. My OB kept me in the hospital a few days longer to ensure my BP was regulated and once all was on track to good we were sent home. I had a vaginal birth with a labour that was 22 hours from start of induction to her arrival. Stay positive, you are in good hands. It will all happen as it is supposed to.
  • ^i should add that I am almost 33 weeks pregnant now and have not had any BP issues this time around! Wanted you to know that scary situations such as this should not cause you hesitation should you want more kids later. Every pregnancy is different and just because you have pre eclempsia with one does not ensure you will/won't experience it again. Keep well
  • I will be praying for you. I have lots of experience with pre-eclampsia and HELLP. I was pre-eclamptic with my first and on bedrest at week 30 and delivered at 35 weeks. My son was in the NICU for 2 weeks. He is a healthy and active 2 yr old.
I am currently battling same issue now. I have been on bedrest since week 25. I just started spilling protein last week and will be delivering soon. I am 34 weeks today. This pregnancy my doc placed me on a baby aspirin which I feel has made the biggest difference on pushing developing the condition later. It decreases chances of developing by 24 percent.
I know how scary it is, sounds like you are in great hands and I will be saying prayers for you and the baby. Do what they tell you and praying you can wait a little longer to deliver.
    Hang in there!!
