Help-Twin Low Fetal Weight

Hi - I had my 20 week ultrasound today.  While Baby A is doing great and does not show any signs of concern.  Yet with Baby B, they detected a lower than average birth weight.  Baby B is weighing 11 ounces when the "average" is 12.7 or so...  My blood tests and screenings are good...  The doctor stated that Baby B's structure (head, abdomen, femur, etc) looks great.  But the low weight of the baby is something that we will have to keep an eye on Baby B because this can mean a chromosome or syndrome issue...  Baby B's size has been stated to be little since our 2 month scan...

Needless to say, I am worried and stressed...

Anyone have any input on this?  Has this happened to anyone?  Has a doctor told you that one baby has lower than desired weight than the average?

Thanks fin advance or any input...

Re: Help-Twin Low Fetal Weight

  • This happened to me with my twins. One of my boys stayed smaller than the other the entire pregnancy. My dr also suggested keeping a close on him and he did but both boys were born completely fine with no health problems whatsoever. My smaller twin boy is still a little smaller than the other and that's okay!

  • First of all, I'm sorry you've got this to worry about.

However, if the doctor said it's something to keep an eye on, that's what it is. Fetal weight measurements aren't that accurate, and anyway, that difference might not even be that big of a deal. Mine measured almost an ounce ahead, and it still only put him at the 74th percentile or something - totally within the average range. This is the time when babies start really growing at different rates, so it doesn't mean as much to be behind now as there's a bigger range of normal.

Doctors aren't in the businesses of hiding bad news from their patients. They certainly aren't going to lie to you, so if you're worried, ask some questions! That is part of why you have an appointment every month.

Finally, even if something is wrong, there isn't anything you can do at this point anyway. I know you won't really be able to not worry about it, but asking some questions might help.

Oh, if you like anecdotes, my friend had twins that were over a pound and a half different in weight when they were born. They were both fine, one was just tinier than the other.
  • I don't have experience with this as I am not having, nor have twins. But at my AS at 20 weeks doc said LO is measuring at 9 oz and didn't seem concerned about size.
  • At my 20 week, my twins were 13 ounces and 11 ounces. My doctor wasn't concerned at all.
  • I'm not having twins but my baby was 11 oz at 20 weeks exactly... Are your twins identical? Sharing placenta? Maybe if the size is different it could be something with that??? Maybe a question for the doctor. No advice. Just good lucks.
  • Thanks ladies SO much for your replies! I appreciate each one of them. I definitely asked as many questions as possible but it's always different hearing it from Moms and real life experiences...
my twin are fraternal - which is a good thing I'm told...
I read your comments concerning the weightat uyour 20 week scans (9 ounces,11 ounces, etc) and literally my jaw dropped bc of how different the reactions and concerns of doctors sometimes are - meaning I'm tooootttally RELIEVED to hear that others have experienced this - twins or singletons - and it's been okay :)
I'm praying for healthy babies ♡ And I appreciate all your replies! THANK U ladies!
  • I understand how this can be stressful. I wouldn't worry too much about it until your next spot. U/S weights aren't exact. Have you read Dr Luke's book about gaining weight with twins? I didn't read it when I was pregnant with my twins but I had a lot of friends who did and swore by it.
  • Laurendutch - no I have not read that book yet. I'm going to download it tonight and take some time to read it. Thank u! :)
  • I think the premise is to eat a ton of protein to gain weight, which equals more developed/healthier babies in case of premature birth. I didn't follow her advice (didn't know about the book). Gained about 45/50 lbs and had a 38w1d delivery. My boys weighed 6lbs and 6lbs6oz.
  • My twins at birth were 4.3 and 3.7..born at 33w4days and only spent 18days in the NICU! Up your protein and eat eat eat ;) all will fall in place :)
  • Got it!!!! Thank you so much!! Perfect timing because I'm heading out to the food store :)
    thank you so so much!
  • What kind of twins are you having? Was the fluid around them okay? My twins were different sizes throughout my pregnancy but never had any problems. Born at 34 weeks, a pound difference.

  • JTA - I'm having fraternal twins. Yes the fluidaround them was good and the doctor said that "sstructurally they look good (head,femur,abdomen)... The only thing that they are saying is a concern is the weight of the one twin.
  • I think it is very very common for twins to have one slightly larger than the other. A lot of the women I have met through IF have twins (Yayyyyy fert med bogo's!) and this seems to be pretty standard.  I am glad that your doc was at least able to tell you that they look good!! :)
PCOS- finally pregnant after 3 years of IF treatment, including 4 failed IUI.

Lucky IUI #5 currently growing in my belly!
