Hello Jan.15! I was wondering if I could join you. My husband and I adopted a baby boy on January 11th. We found out we were "chosen" about 2 and a half weeks before he was born, so I can honestly say it has been a whirlwind! I would love to have a place to discuss and learn about age specific topics.
Wow- Thank you all so much for your warm welcome! I didn't consider telling my adoption story- but I am happy to share: (There was so much I didnt know about adoption, until I was part of one).
My husband and I have been TTC since December 2009. I was a bit in denial about our infertility, but when we finally went to the doctor, we were told, the chances are not good. We did some soul searching for a while, and my husband suggested adoption. We found an agency and social worker that we LOVED, back in June. It made the process much easier. There were lots of classes, meetings and SO MUCH PAPERWORK!!!!
We were finally approved in September. And considered "Waiting", which we knew could take up to 2 years. It is an open adoption, so the birth mother looks through profile books and even cheesy "video dating style" movie clips we awkwardly had to make to find the couple/family to be adoptive parents. On December 22nd, I was in a craft store doing some Christmas shopping when I got the call-(and made a lot of crafters very uncomfortable, when I burst into tears. LOL) We had been chosen!!!! The Expectant Mother was a college student who was due in 2 weeks!
We met her and her mother for lunch on the 23rd. She was such a sweet girl, we tried making conversation, but the whole thing was pretty surreal! She made a birth plan with her social worker that she did not want to find out the baby's sex, or see the baby in the hospital. She wanted us to come up and bond with the baby from the first day. On January 11th, we got the call that a baby was born. We didnt know anything but that he/she was here! We drove about 2 hours away. We finally got to the nursery- bursting with excitment. A nurse pushed his bassinet in and held up 2 hats- pink and blue and asked us to guess which hat we needed. I took one look at him and said BLUE!!! Since I didnt give birth, we did not get a hospital room. We spent the next two days in a storage room off of the nursery/ nurses' station. We made the best of it, but I couldn't help feeling like we were in the way. We were happy to get home and share our little guy with our family. Now we are just enjoying our little happy family.
We are still only halfway through our adoption journey. For example, the birth mother has 30 days to change her mind- which is nerve-wracking at times, but we are just focusing on bonding with our baby. We share monthly pictures and letters with his birth mother for the first 6 months, and yearly after that (at least) and have the option of a yearly visit, if it's something she is interested in, she is not sure yet. We are just so in love with little man, and soaking up every minute with him! I can't thank you all enough for the kind reception you have given me here! I look forward to getting to know you all better
Congratulations! I was adopted by my parents at 6 weeks old and have been blessed to have an amazing family & I'm sure your son will grow up thinking the same! Xxx
