Back to teaching mid year...any others?

i am going back to work Tuesday. There has been a sub and it sounds like the kids are failing and not caring at the moment (8th grade) any other moms go back mid year and how did you handle the situation. Also what are the routines that you have for your baby.. What time do you sleep etc. I will also be pumping at work so does anyone else do that.. Just nervous/ anxious how I'm going to handle the kids/ planning / grading/ pumping: pick up and drop off of Lo.... Help!!!

Re: Back to teaching mid year...any others?

  • I went back second semester, but luckily I teach semester classes. Therefore I started the semester with new students. I teach 6, 7 & 8th grade. I pump every morning before work & at lunch. We all go yo bed around 9:30. I've been teaching for 11 years so I have a good system of planning & grading so I do very little at home. It's the only way I can spend time with the kids at night. It will all fall into place. Put a list on your door at home so you don't forget anything. Pump, bottles, ice packs, lunch, water, papers, baby  Good Luck!

  • I went back right before Thanksgiving and it really wasn't too hard for my students to transition back to my expectations. I teach 3rd grade so I know it's definitely a different set of challenges with 8th graders. My sub had very little structure so I had to be really strict the first couple of weeks but they were glad to have me back. I pump before school, at lunch, and after school. I have a mini-fridge in my classroom so that really helps with milk storage. This is my 6th year teaching so I have a system down pretty well for planning/grading but most days I still feel like I'm just treading water. I just tell myself that the papers will eventually get graded...I'd rather spend time cuddling with my baby than grading. As for our schedule, LO goes down around 8 or 9, I usually go to bed around 10. LO eats at 2am and 6am. Last week, he was going back to sleep after his 6am feed so we could both get ready for work while he slept. If he stays awake after that one, then DH watches him while I get ready and then we switch. We leave for daycare at 7 and I'm at school by 7:30 (kids come back at 8:15). Good luck! Definitely took a while to get into a routine but now it's not so bad.

  • Thank you so much everyone for your feedback.. I think I will need a list so I remember everything... I guess I am also worried about having time for everything without getting burned out... Also worried about not having enough milk supply when pumping... I may have lucked out and have another day to plan everything because I live In NJ and we should have a Snow day... One extra day to enjoy my baby :)

Make sure you put your baby on the list so you won't forget him/her.

Wow some of you are just flat out rude and have sticks up your you know what. @rlyttle‌ was just explaining her system that she has down, in no way was she saying she is perfect. Nice example you are setting for your little ones. Grow up.!

Yea, no she knows exactly why we reacted that way. It's not a surprise to anyone except those of you that are new.

  • Hi! I am also a teacher (3rd grade) and I went back right before winter break. Honestly, it has been a serious struggle. I was pumping when I got to work, during my lunch, and at the end of the day at work and hated it! I felt so uncomfortable and I could tell because my milk dropped in half that first week. I spend 3 weeks doing this and ended up getting mastitis is both breasts. Sooo painful!!! After struggling with that, I lost my milk and have had to resort to using my freezer stash. But back to the "teacher" me - it's hard. I used to want to be at work helping my students, and honestly I'm still waiting for the "want" to come back. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to have a job but I find myself constantly thinking about my little guy and wondering just how much I'm missing. Sorry to be a buzzkill, just wanted to give an honest answer! Hope you handle it better than I did!!

  • Thank you for sharing your experiences.. I started on Wednesday and have had two snow days to enjoy lo...i figured out the times to pump and next week is the end of the marking period so I have new 6th graders and one less class so I think it will be ok.. Now once I start assigning things and grades come in it'll be a little different!
