Anyone else have to wait until 10w or more for 1st US?

I made (what I thought would be) my first OB appointment for an US and all that jazz on the 23rd. By that point I was 9w4d. I got to the doctor and they had me give a urine sample for a pregnancy confirmation test. My doctor came in, told me I was pregnant (yes, thank you, I knew that already...), gave me a packet of info and told me to schedule my appointment for two weeks from then. She said she didn't want to disappoint me if we couldn't hear the heart beat that day since it was so early, and it didn't sound like I would be able to see an ultrasound picture at my next appointment either - just the heart beat. I am SO frustrated and ANTSY to see and hear this baby! I've had virtually no symptoms so I've really been counting on that kind of an experience to make it hit home for me. Has anyone else experienced this kind of thing?

  • I won't get an ultrasound until I'm 12 weeks.

Its more common than you think. Unless you've had a history of miscarriage or if you're considered high risk, most ultrasounds aren't done until later. Some people only ever get their anatomy scan around 20 weeks.

  • Sad but true! With my first, the only reason I got a scan at all during first tri at 7wks, was because we had a scare with some bleeding and I had absolutely no recollection of the first day of my last period. So doc wanted to be sure Lil peanut was doing okay in there and to get an accurate due date.
With Peanut 2 due in late August, I'm 9w5d today, and STILL haven't even had my first OB appt! My new OB doesn't take women for first appts until they are 10w or further along! So Friday I'll be 10w0d and he agreed to see me. I have no idea if there will be an ultrasound or not. I'm kind of pushy, and perfectly happy to try bossing him into taking a peek. I heard most docs like to have a little look at the 10w mark just to make sure the pregnancy is viable but it's USUALLY with the doppler not necessarily an US. Hang in there Mama! If doc doesn't think there is a reason to worry, then try not to....I know it's hard!
  • Yep, my first ultrasound wasn't schedule until 12 weeks and I just got lucky to be able to see baby at 10w 3d because my OB had a basic scan machine in his office. Had my 12-13w ultrasound today, and it was totally worth the wait!

I know it's nerve-wracking and super annoying but hang in there! You'll be seeing your baby before you know it :)

I had a transvaginal ultrasound at 6 weeks 6 days and a saw the heart beat and was given a picture. I just had another appointment at ten weeks and I saw and heard the heart beat. I think my doctor is ultrasound and doppler happy lol.

I am also not high risk. It is just the way my doctor runs her practice. I will also have an u/s at 13 weeks for nuchal testing.
  • I get my first and probably only ultrasound at 18 and half weeks. It will be the whole package to see the baby find out the sex measuring making sure that it's okay and everything is alright but here where I live for Newfoundland they don't do them unless you have a high-risk or a reason to really be worried about baby
  • I am getting my one and only ultrasound at 20 weeks baring any complications. I know the waiting sucks but just remember that if you were high risk or there was an issue you would be getting one sooner
  • We tried fetal Doppler at 9 weeks and didn't hear anything. It was very disappointing. Next appt is Feb 11 at 13 weeks. We will schedule a US then. So it'll be a while for me too. Hang tight. I keep reminding myself of when we tried to find a heartbeat early and didn't. Now I'm fine with waiting until they are sure they'll see/hear something.
  • Most OBs are like that, unless you have circumstances (bleeding, prior losses, etc), you may get your first between 16-20 weeks for the anatomy scan. That's what my midwife center does. They did send me for a dating u/s on Monday after our appointment because they couldn't hear the heartbeat well and thought I was 12 weeks (I knew I was only 10 based on BBT). Otherwise if we would've heard it strongly I'd still be waiting. I know it's tough! Hang in there!!
  • Waiting for my one and only US at 20ish weeks, same as with DS-

Trust your body and baby and dr- if not it is going to be a long 40 weeks.
  • I've had so many problems with this pregnancy already. Constant bleeding and all that. I had one at 8w3d last night at 10w4d and I'm just now heading to my actual first ultrasound at 10w5d. Its completely normal.

  • Ya I only had one today bc we had no idea how far along I was - last period was in Oct! But found out I'm 9 weeks and 5 days and was really cool to see! I have no symptoms either so I had a hard time believing I was too! I go again in 3 weeks for my 12 week. So crazy! But still not telling anyone just yet :-)
  • I won't get an u/s until 18-20w when they do the anatomy scan.

  • I get my first US around 15-18 weeks, depending on availability. My initial OB want until 10w3d. He used the Doppler couldn't hear the HB, but yesterday at 12w4d he found it in about 15 sec.
So while its normal, it's not always easy to wait.

  • I won't have my first US until 18 -20 weeks or so. Will listen to the HB for first time on feb 23rd I'll be 12 weeks then
  • The first doctor I tried did in fact state that I had to be 10 wks or more before I could schedule an appointment with them #-o . I found another doctor...I was 9 wks to be exact and there I received blood work/ultrasound/etc. We were able to hear our baby's heartbeat loud and clear and see the little nugget too!
I guess it's just different doctors and their preference.
  • I have zero symptoms so I was very anxious to see my little peanut too. I had to wait until I was about 10w2d to get an ultrasound and everything was fine. So rest assured that even if you don't have symptoms, your baby could be perfectly fine.
  • I told my doctor I was uneasy waiting so long so she booked me an ultrasound at 7 weeks and again at 11. My 11 week scan is next week :)
  • I'm 13 weeks now and will be going in for a 5th ultrasound next week. I have a severe bicornuate uterus, history of losses, and a placenta that's sitting on top of my cervix at this point. My doctor wants to monitor everything very closely, understandably.

It's nice to see the baby but it's tough to take time off work each time and have to pay $100+ for each one especially now that I've had to quit one of my jobs (required lifting). As tough as it would be to have to wait so long for an ultrasound, part of me wishes I could go much less because it's getting expensive between missing work and paying each time. :-/
  • Hang in there! I had a transvaginal ultrasound at 5 weeks and 6 weeks. At 5 weeks they thought I had lost the baby and thankfully at 6 weeks we saw the heartbeat. I do not have another ultrasound until 12 weeks and it is also killing me. after the scare that I had lost the baby not seeing the baby or hearing the heartbeat is really difficult. We have our next appointment on 2/6 and ultrasound on 2/13. I am hoping on the 6th we will hear the heartbeat. The waiting is truly the hardest part, but I think we all have a lot of waiting to do until August. :-)

  • I am not scheduled for my first ultrasound until 15 weeks! It's been unbearable waiting!! My first appointment went like yours, and at my 12-week check-up, she checked the baby's heartbeat with a fetal doppler. But that was it! I feel like the next 13 days are going to go by so slow while I wait for the ultrasound appointment.
  • I was 10w3d at my first appt. My doc did a dating ultrasound just because I wasn't 100% on my date. My next one will be our NT scan but after that, our anatomy ultrsound

I got my first US done in the ER when I was 8w1d pregnant & we could hear & see the heartbeat, 176 bpm. We could also see the baby moving around & stuff. Unfortunately, I don't get to see my OB til the 30th. I'll be 10w along at that time. That's actually abnormally fast around here. My last pregnancy ended in a miscarriage before I could even see an OB, & I would have been already into my 2 trimester before I even got see em. I guess they've heightened my priority now...
  • I had and inter-uterine u/s (very uncomfortable) at 5w4days and they would not let me look at the screen. It was awful. I cried. Now I am 13w4days and still havent been able to see my doctor. She scheduled an appointment with me last week and then cancelled and now she is on vacation but she is the only doctor my insurance will allow me to see so now I am scheduled to see her monday of next week. HOPING I get to find out what I am having but it doesnt seem very likely.
  • They will not even let me meet with the OB until 13 weeks. Then I get to hear the heartbeat but no US until 20 weeks.
  • I had a spotting scare at 8 weeks, so we had an ultra sound to check on the viability of the pregnancy. If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't have gotten one until the anatomy scan after 18 weeks!

My first actual appointment wasn't until I was 11 weeks, and they didn't do anything besides talk to me and do a physical exam. My next appointment in a week I'll be almost 15 weeks and we MIGHT hear the heart beat. The appointment after that is the anatomy scan! I'm high risk, so I'm not sure what that means because so far they don't seem to be doing anything out of the ordinary.
  • I'm 9 weeks and 3 days, I've had two ultrasounds but I'm also high risk. My dr seems to do them at every appointment. But ever OB is different.
  • This is normal. We heard the heartbeat at our 11 week appt and had our first ultrasound today at our 13 week appt
  • Yes I feel your pain. The waiting is killing me! I am just ready to go to the doctor to be sure everything is good! My first appointment is on Feb 10th and that's just to answer questions and take blood. My ultrasound appointment isn't until February 17th. Driving me crazy!
  • With my first two I didn't get an ultra sound until about 20 weeks. This time, because I'm over 35 I will have one at 12 weeks for my screening. But if I weren't to have the screening I'd have to wait again. I always wonder why so many others have them so early on when my ob seems to wait until mid pregnancy.
  • I had my initial confirmation US on Jan. 23 with my OB. I thought I was 7 weeks at that point, but it turns I was actually 8w6d. My OB was very excited to do an US right off the bat...heard a strong heartbeat. He suggests next time deciding whether to do a CVS or not, which I believe will be another US as well. The waiting would have killed me. Hang on there!
  • I am 13w,5d and have had 5 ultrasounds (the 6th one will be in 2weeks). I've had a lot of scary complications, and while it's nice to see LO, I would give anything to not be gushing blood and have abnormal ultrasounds that require specialists and perinatologists.

I know how hard it is to wait, my first pregnancy was so boring and uneventful, I only had a dating u/s and my anatomy scan (and I definitely wanted more appts and scans). But the flip side is so much worse. I'm sorry you have to wait, I know how excited you must be! I hope your first scan goes wonderfully!!!
  • Thank you all! I'm so sorry to hear of many of your complications, and it does make my situation seem a lot better. I do hope everything goes well for all of you! It came a lot faster than I was expecting, but my first OB appt is is this Friday! So hopefully I will be able to hear the heartbeat and put my mind at ease! Thanks again for all the kind words and reassurances! I'll be sure to update after Friday!
  • You have already gotten similar answers, but yes, it's actually a good thing.  If you are uneasy for whatever reason, though, talk to your OB about it.  I had some bleeding that they said was totally normal over the phone.  Then, a couple days later, I went into the office because I thought I had a UTI.  The nurse practitioner I saw was super nice and said she would schedule an US for me just to put my mind at ease.  I had one later that day when I was only about 6 weeks along.  They also used that to determine my exact due date since I have always had irregular periods.  They ended up finding an implantation bleed that was causing the spotting, so I had to have another US about 2 weeks later to make sure that was cleared up (it was).  Good luck at your appt!

  • I went to the doctor today and she couldn't hear the heartbeat on her Doppler, so she sent us to the imaging center nearby. I had an ultrasound there and we were able to see the baby! It was moving like crazy in there! We didn't hear the heartbeat there, but they were able to see it and it was at 161bpm! Such a relief to see the baby and know that it's doing just fine in there :)
  • We had our first ultrasound at 12 weeks. I was upset bc I wanted to see baby but not much you can do but try to pass the time
  • I don't have my first u/s until Feb 17th  and I will be almost 14 weeks by then, but i have heard the baby's heartbeat two different times and everything sounds great so far, so I feel ok about it.
  • Depends on the practice and OB. I had U/s at 8 weeks with previous OB/practice. Current OB, not until anatomy scan at 20w.
  • I wasn't able to get into my obgyn until I was just over 12 weeks. I got to hear the heartbeat and was satisfied, everything was just fine! They went ahead and scheduled my 1st ultra sound for my 13th weeks and to my surprise we found out we are gaving a girl! I thought 13 weeks was a little early to tell but my u/s tech was completely positive. Hope she's right because I've already started shopping
  • I won't have an ultrasound until 22 weeks. We had a miscarriage 2 years ago so I was pretty anxious about waiting that long but I didn't even have my first appointment until 10 weeks. We got to hear the heartbeat then which makes it easier to wait. We recorded it so we could listen to it later. It helps when I'm feeling anxious.
