Running Mums

So I know that conventional wisdom is that running during pregnancy is totally OK and I was running a lot whilst TTC to ensure I was in good enough shape to continue during my pregnancy as with #1 I didnt feel i was and by the time I pulled my head out of the toilet it was too late to start. I really want to carry on and had a great run outside the other day, but yesterday I was on the treadmill and I just felt like I was jiggling everything around a lot and felt super uncomfortable. It got better during the run, but still didnt feel great.

I think part of the problem is that I live in Asia and it is just not the cultural norm for women to exercise during pregnancy here. Particularly not running, everyone who sees me in running stuff is like "oh my goodness you are running whilst pregnant, is the baby going to be Ok?". My Gynae told me I should stick to stretching, which is ridiculous and im not going to do that but im not getting the same satisfaction out of the elyptical trainer.

I guess I am just wondering whether anyone else feels odd running, or perhaps its that the treadmill gives the impression of more impact and I need to stick to outside, or  ill just get used to the feeling? Thanks in advance!

Re: Running Mums

  • Hi there :) I'm a runner too and although I haven't had the energy to go for an actual run since we found out we were expecting I have been trying to exercise at least an hour most days of the week. I try and get on a bike though. I did various cardio weight mixed interval exercise before and now a few exercises feel too "jumpy" to be safe. I don't know I guess if something were to happen ( even though it may not be related to my exercise) I know I'd never forgive myself so better safe than sorry :) just my two cents. I guess the point is to exercise but make sure it is something more stable and doesn't involve too much up and down movement. Oh and I've tried to monitor my heart rate and make sure it doesn't get too high ( for me that's over 150 BPM) just my perspective hope it helps!!

I have been running about 5 times a week, 2-4 miles each time and on the treadmill. Not going super hard and haven't had any issues with jiggling other than feeling like I need a more supportive bra. I go in the mornings, though, before I get bloated (which is inevitable as as the day progresses).
  • The jiggling bothered me too so I moved to the elliptical (hate that thing) so there's less impact but I can still get in a decent workout. Are you doing any weight training? Also feel your pain about being late to the game on continuing to run. I slacked the whole first 10 weeks and I was very disappointed with how much it set me back. Keep doing what you're doing. Body will tell you when you need a break.
  • Runner here too and I feel you on the jiggling!  I hate the feeling of running when I feel things jiggling, which just started happening recently in my legs (time for more squats!), but usually after about 5 minutes into the run the feeling goes away and I'm in my zone- here I am at nearly 14 weeks and just getting back into the running due to morning sickness- stick with the running and who cares what the others say, your doing your body good, physically and mentally! It will get easier- well easier now maybe a little harder as you grow ha

  • Yes on the jiggling, it's weird! Not self conscious yet but I'm sure I will be once I start showing. I'm running a 5k in 2 weeks and I'm nervous I'll get judgy stares.
  • Oh @poppymt40‌ judgy stares are definitely something I know is coming!! Good luck with your run & ignore ;-) @rebeccal516 I am also doing weight training, which feels fine actually. I think you are all right though I feel it's the baby jiggling but suspect it's actually my rapidly expanding rear end! Thanks everyone really helpful and has made me feel much better!
