So I'm going to be 35 weeks on Saturday, and I am 17 years old (no negative comments please) but on Tuesday my doctor told me i was measuring bigger than i should and scheduled me for an ultrasound which i will receive tomorrow but she's worried that my baby will be too big for me and im just kinda freaking out. it will be a biophysical profile and i just am scared that i wont do well. any words of advice to keep me from having a breakdown? :((

  • The dr should be able to know if the baby is too big for you, in that case it's likely you will have a c section. However hang in there, you will be surprised what your body can handle. Just relax and try not to stress.

Ultrasounds can be off by a few pounds. I've heard many stories of this. It could also be that you have a lot of fluid, which could make you measure big. Don't worry about it, I'm sure it will be fine. Your gonna have this baby one way or another. It's what you sign up for when you get pregnant.

  • Try to relax, my doctors told me the same exact thing and did an ultrasound. Baby was measuring right where she should be at 33 weeks and no one was concerned about it. Basically the doctor said it is just how I am carrying and not her.

  • Search measuring large on this forum. Not usually a big deal. Maybe it's twins. I'm measuring large and that is the reason.

If the baby's too big they'll just cut it out of you. You won't be pregnant forever. Chill out.
Or, as I said, they will cut it out of you even if it's NOT too big. Please read the link I posted for you, if they tell you baby is "big".
  • From article linked at bottom: "Although big babies are born to only 1 out of 10 women, the 2013 Listening to Mothers Survey found that 2 out of 3 American women had an ultrasound at the end of pregnancy to determine the baby’s size, and 1 out of 3 were told that their babies were too big. In the end, the average birth weight of these suspected “big babies” was only 7 lbs 13 oz (Declercq, Sakala et al. 2013)." I know several women who had a c-section for "big baby" and the kid was only 6-7 lb. The surgery was for NO REASON. Measuring big can happen for many reasons, most of which are not worrisome. Ultrasounds this late are notoriously inaccurate and can be off by 2+ pounds! Also "big baby" is NOT a good reason to do a c-section. Your body will almost always grow a baby that you CAN birth vaginally, and the only way to know one way or the other is to TRY. Your doctor CAN NOT know what your body is capable of until labor. Period. No matter what they tell you. The pelvis softens and opens so much you cannot look at a woman and know what she is capable of. There is a reason the United States has one of the highest rates of c-section in the world -- our doctors do them unnecessarily. They aren't evil people, they are just trained to do them for reasons that aren't actually good reasons. Being 17, and scared, it will be hard to put your foot down about this. And you may not want to -- that's ok, too. But if you read about it & decide that despite a "big baby" you want to labor and try to birth vaginally-- REFUSE a scheduled c-section. Also, you can refuse an induction -- those increase the risk of c-section. You are allowed to tell your doctor no. Read this link -- it's really good info about your situation!!! https://evidencebasedbirth.com/evidence-for-induction-or-c-section-for-big-baby/
All of this!!!!! It is a big deal if they "just cut the baby out of you."  A lot of times it is for no reason at all b/c it is very hard for them to predict the weight of your baby by u/s.  Do your research and do what you are most comfortable with.  I would never schedule a c/s just because my doctor said my baby was too big...chances of you being able to birth your baby vaginally are probably pretty good.  Good luck!

I'm not exactly sure what being 17 has to do with you measuring big. If you were 14 and your hips hadn't finished growing yet, it'd be a bigger deal.

Just keep in mind that the U/S can be off by 2lbs, so even if they tell you your baby is a little big it's probably not that much of a cause for concern. Women have been known to push out 10 1/2 pounders, so as long as you don't have freakishly narrow hips you'll manage, or you'll get a section if you have a case of arrested descent. Either way, not the end of the world. This info is also on the thread under "measuring big" and on a bunch of medical sites accessible via google.

  • Good luck, and try not to worry -- it is what it is.  No amount of worrying will make baby smaller or lead to a different outcome.  But what CAN lead to a different outcome is educating yourself on the information given to you above, and having good, open, and thorough discussions with your doctor.  You can do this, hang in there!

  • I think it's ridiculous that doctor's suggest c-sections because baby is too big. My family has a history of big babies (grandfather-13lbs, I was over 9lbs, my sister was over 10lbs and my brother was over 11lbs) and the moms all gave birth vaginally.. NATURALLY.
It can be done, resort to c-section if the baby is under distress during labor. Do what feels right for you, research and become knowledgeable in your options.

  • Educate yourself on the process of labor and birth. Babies are rarely too big for the mother because our bodies are capable of amazing things. In my birthing classes I've been told that a big baby is often just more baby fat to push out and is not much more difficult than an average sized baby. Also as people have said their measurements are not exact and does not mean you have to have a c section. Just calm down, do your own research on birth options and have faith in your body.

  • Measuring big is quite common. If you search the phrase "measuring big" in the search bar you will see just how many of us have been told the same thing. I'm having weekly NST's and bi weekly ultrasounds now because I was measuring bigger than normal. At first they said my baby was actually on the small size when they did an ultrasound to check why I was measuring ahead, then at the next us, they said I had unusually high fluid levels. Finally, at this weeks NST and ultrasound, the tech said that while my fluid is a bit high, it's still in the normal range so everything looks just fine and they don't know why I measure a few weeks ahead. It's really not an exact science, more like a guide your ob uses to determine if you have suddenly grown a ton in a short period of time or if you have stopped growing etc... I wouldn't stress myself out if I were you, I let myself worry and it was for nothing
