Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Lower back pain 4 mo PP?

I am experiencing terrible lower back pain. I just started Physical Therapy (1 session so far) and it's getting worse. I was bent over changing LO this morning and I had a sharp pain instead of a constant pain. I feel broken. Anyone else experiencing this? Wonder if it;s from the epidural?

  • I have a pain on my back just where I had the epidural and it gets worse after I carry LO around during the day ( she is over 20 pounds ). It is around the mid section on my spine I will say, haven't spoke to my doctor about it yet but soon will, just wanted you to know you are not alone.

Thank you! It's absolutely awful. I feel paralyzed some days if I move the wrong way. :(

Not sure if it's from the epidural but I get back pain off and on.  LO's on the bigger side (over 20 lbs) so if I'm not careful about picking him up, my back can get pretty bad.  That's why I end up wearing him instead of carrying him... that seems to help.  GL with physical therapy!
  • I worked at a Chiropractic clinic for 5 years and saw many women come in experiencing back pain after carrying a baby for 9 months. All that weight pulling your spine in a unnatural direction will cause back pain especially after you have the baby and that weight suddenly drops no longer pulling you forward. Its not from your Epi, epis are given in the middle of your back not lower. I suggest you find a good chiropractor and strengthen your core to give your spine good support. I understand your pain I am going through the same thing. Wish you well and a speedy recovery!

  • I've been to 2 sessions so far... I don't feel any better. I even did one of the stretches and felt broken afterwards. Could not pick up LO at all. I have 3 more sessions...  just wish I had SOME improvement...

  • Its because your core is weakened from carrying your baby, and now you're constantly bending and lifting.
I got to the point I was crying because I couldn't lift my LO.. It was awful. I suggest a good chiropractor. Also ice, a back brace, and Motrin.

I am experiencing this, and didn't have an epidural.   My LO is going to be 6 months soon and I am having a lot of lower back/hip pain.  I was seeing a chiropractor before and during pregnancy but had not been back since giving birth.  I had 2 adjustments and she suggested physical therapy. I have been there twice and have been doing the exercises and stretches she gave me at home. These are meant to strengthen my core, pelvic floor.  Its amazing how such little movements can make a difference.  I am still in pain but hope that over time it will get better. Its hard for me to find time to do these at home every day, so sometimes I do them on my break at work, I am lucky that I have that chance.  Yesterday I was on my feet for most of the day and was in so much pain last night I couldn't sleep.

*edit - I just realized how old this post is. I was searching for someone else that might be going through this and had PT that helped.  Didn't look at the date until after posting - o well - maybe someone will come across this!
  • Hi! I started this thread. The P/T did work for me. Only had 6 sessions and felt much better. I still get some lower back pain here and there but I just work on the stretches they gave me and it seems to help. Good Luck!!

  • Carrying the infant carrier always messes my back up. It will feel sore for a day or two then back to normal until next time. Glad the PT helped you.
