A question regarding the sweep.

So today due to medical reasons at just over 39 weeks the doctor has given me the sweep. This is not something I would encourage having unless medically needed ladies. My question is for those out there that have had it, how long did it take for labour to kick in?????

It's about 50% effective within 24-48 hours. Mine didn't work. I've had friends go into labor within hours of having it done.

Had a sweep (also for medical reasons) on Tuesday morning at 10:15am at my 39 week appointment and delivered my baby boy at 10:39pm that night! Pretty much within an hour of the membrane sweep i had bad cramping and pain that lasted all day ... Noticed tightening and more organized pains etc in the midafternoon - was timing contractions starting around 5:30pm.arrived at the hospital around 7:15pm and the rest is history ... Good luck!!

With my first, I had 511 contractions for over 30 hours before delivering my little one. I went to the hospital after about 17 hrs and got sent home because I wasn't progressing. I went back about 12 hours later and was admitted at 7 cm. They broke my water and had the baby within a few hours. Not trying to scare any ftms but it can be a long process....

Hang in there, you know it will have to end soon!

I have not had this done myself so I have no first hand knowledge, but from what I've read there is no guarantee that having your membranes swept will bring on labor at all. For some women it's hours, for some it's days and for some it's weeks and an induction is more likely to do the job. You'll just have to wait and see what category you're in.

Five days for me. I lost bits of my mucus plug for all five days.

I delivered at 41+5 so maybe the sweep helped start the process or maybe it was just time.

With my last baby they did one at 39 weeks and I lost my mucous plug within 24 hours. My OB did it again at 40 weeks and I went into labor within 12 hours.

This is my first baby and if I'm honest ive had some many contradicting answers from doctors that I'm totally clueless as to what to expect.
I've not had any proper breaks between contractions since having it done today, and as the night goes on its getting way stronger and just constantly there.. What point did you call the hospital? @Dannylion24‌

@lpinup‌ hey girl - sorry I'm mobile and don't usually see tags! I'm only 15 minutes from the hospital so I called my OB and headed over when contractions were 5-6 minutes apart and lasting 45-60 seconds. I was admitted when they were consistently 4 minutes apart and Id dilated to 4cm.

Hey so I didn't end up going to the hospital in the end.. I had a hot bath got into bed and fell asleep.. Powering through. I'm going to see how things are today.. And go from there. Thanks for your advice and suppor On this one x

I was swept on Friday around 3. Bad contractions/cramps for an hour or two afterwards and then nothing. Guessing it didn't work, but I've still got a few hours left before that 48-hour window. Dtd last Sunday which left me with 5.5 hrs of painful contractions and landed me in L&D for 3 hours. My body is into gearing up and petering out.

I got a sweep at 39 weeks. Lost some of my plug, had some bleeding and cramping. At 40 weeks she did it again and I had hardly any cramps but have been losing more plug for the last two days. Still no baby and I'm 40w2d. I have an induction set for Monday morning. Praying she comes on her own before then!

My doctor did a sweep at my appt on Thursday, I lost my mp on Friday, and now nothing.

I guess labor and delivery is just an agonizing waiting game! I'll send positive T&P your way for some progress - I know how frustrating it can be. Good luck!

With my last pregnancy I was swept at 39 weeks, I was already dilated to a 4, almost 5. I had my little lady two hours later.

I've had regular pains for the last 2 days now I just don't know when is the right time to call the hospital, I've already lost my mucus plug.. No water have broken so it's literally just contractions.. Ahhhh so frustrating

@lpinup‌, mine were like that (less the regularity) the entire weekend before dd's arrival. I came home from our 39 week appointment in tears from the frustration of dealing with them and not progressing any for the 3rd appointment that month. Resorting to hot wings and pineapple as joking comfort foods and spending time on my exercise ball and in a bath helped alleviate the discomfort. And she answered the am I or am I not question by breaking my water at 1:30 am the following morning. Here's hoping you're close and your LO will make things clear for you soon.

@anxiousmommy85‌ It's so hard! I have an appointment up at the hospital tomorrow where they will tell me if they are going to just go ahead and induce fully. He's due on Thursday so i have a feeling they may just give me another sweep and send me on my way.. We shall see what happens, maybe something tonight might properly change x

@lpinup-I can't imagine. I did the debate on having my membranes swept before I left last Monday and not taking the doc's offer to schedule an induction was more than a little tempting. The only reason I held off was I was still almost a week away from my due date and had no medical reason to change that. Fingers crossed the exam tips you over and there's no reason for induction or to send you home.

Both of these posts completely contradict each other. You're saying you're able to clean through the contractions and didn't bother going to L&D. Then you're saying you were stripped due to lack of movement and irregular heart beat in your baby. The issues with baby in themselves would be grounds for a full induction, emergency c-section or constant monitoring. Problems with the heart beat typically signify baby is in some kind of distress. No medical professional or hospital staff in their right minds are going to leave something like that unmonitored, even this late in pregnancy. There's no reason to NOT deliver immediately at that point so stripping your membranes and letting you go home to "wait it out" don't add up. Please explain that one cos I'm REALLY confused having been the receiver of an emergency c-section with my first due to complications and his life being at risk.

Decreased movement could be any number of things (this coming from myself, who's been in for BPP's and NST's consistently due to a VERY quiet baby lately). Being at the end of our pregnancies, our babies are going to be much more quiet so I'll give you that one. But if baby's movement is genuinely a concern of your physician's then there's NO way they'd be allowing you to go unmonitored. So that, again, doesn't add up to me.

You're looking for a reason to be offended, sweetheart. You seem to be really good at that so maybe you don't see that you're doing it..? You also seem to have a decent amount of snark in your history so how about you cool it when someone gives you a non-snarky answer? You don't have any room to bark about a snarky one since you've given them, either. You can't dish it out if you can't handle it in return. And telling someone to not bother responding to your thread with an answer you don't like or want when just 2 days ago you told someone they were selfish for wanting to induce? C'mon honey. Don't be a hypocrite. It's not attractive and you need to hold yourself to a higher standard, even if it's on an online forum. Have some class.

@chicagojackie in NO way was saying anything you accused her of and she IS a doctor so what she says needs to be taken to heart IMO. She's not out to pick on you or anything. She's simply pointing out what membrane sweeping is intended for and pointing out that you can't rely on it as a guarantee that it's going to mean anything in the long run so you really do need to chill on freaking out. You should have been able to gather that much yourself from reading all of the different answers on your thread.

BTW: If you feel like you're being made to explain yourself, then maybe you should be explaining yourself or looking deeper into your decision. If you're confident in your decision to go the route you have with your doctor, then you won't feel the need to explain yourself to anyone. You don't owe anyone an explanation for anything but by putting yourself in the defensive stance you have, you've given up that right and opened up yourself to questioning and ridicule. You have no one to blame but yourself for you feeling vulnerable but go ahead and throw that blame out there if that's what helps you sleep at night, booboo. It's the same psychological concept as someone feeling the need to defend themselves when they're called a liar or a racist (not saying you're either, just using similar examples that are taught together in a psychology course so exhale cos I'm sure you're already huffy from just reading that). If you feel like you have to defend yourself, then you're finding fault in your decision and you somehow feel the need to justify yourself.

You and some of these other girls may have more run of the board now that the majority of us regs have been chased out, but don't doubt the devotion of those of us that remain to trying to restore this board or our protection of each other. You attack one of ours and you WILL catch the sharp end of the Viper's fangs. Try again when you're ready to play with the big girls.

Firstly if you read my original post i said don't do this ladies unless there's a medical reason for it, I'm not being a hypocrite I don't agree with being induced because your too impatient snd a little fed up of being pregnant. And seeing as I live practically on the same road as my hospital the doctor felt it would be best I stayed at home and come in every other day for check ups on the baby. And just to clarify I don't think of myself as having the run of anything. Was given the sweep on Friday and told that if nothing changes my planned induction would go through today, as its my first baby they were not keen on the possible c-section risk that there is as because I'm not even overdue induction may not work. As to your little comment on lying or whatever you said.. Why even insinuate at it if your "not calling me a liar" Hunni I have no reason to lie to anyone. Like I said before I only wanted to hear how long it took for other people. Didn't want someone coming along saying answers were stupid from other ladies.. Need in that was what exactly?

With all three of my children I went into labor within hours after the membrane sweep. It was no more then maybe 4 hours afterwards.

With my first I had a sweep on my due date, two hours after the sweep contractions started, gave birth the day after. I'm hoping they offer me a sweep this time on my due date, would like number 2 to be on time too.
