Yesterday I had my 20 week ultrasound and found out that my little boy has enlarged kidneys, although the doctor noted that he was both collecting and expelling urine, so that's a good thing. He also said that everything else was as it should be. The doctor referred me for genetic counseling and and a level 2 scan, which I will do tomorrow. However, he was very vague about what this could mean. He basically said that kidney problems can range from mild to severe and that we need to find out more before he can tell me anything. Of course I am worried. I looked online and mostly see positive stories about this happening to other baby boys and them growing out of it, which of course would be great, but I want to prepare myself for the worst case scenario. Not to be negative, but I don't want to be blindsided. Is my worst case scenario that I lose my baby? Or is it that he needs surgery after he's born or possible dialysis and/or a transplant? I just want to know what to expect. Does anyone know?
Re: Enlarged Kidneys at 20 Week Scan- Freaked Out
It actually is very common and most of the time it clears up before the baby is born. Ultrasounds also aren't always very clear either. If it doesn't clear up then your baby will be put on antibiotics to reduce infection risk and be monitored up until a year and then have a small surgery then to correct it.
I was told to get an ultrasound after my DD was born. We did it at the hospital and it was all gone. We were so grateful for it because I had worried about it for the last half of pregnancy. I hope it will all go well for you too and try not to worry about it too much.
