Diaper Rash

We are going on month 2 of a diaper rash --it is only located around her rectum--not spreading anywhere (so it's small) it doesn't seem like it's bothering her. Dr said she "thought it looked a little yeasty." So--for 9 weeks now we have been in sposies and using nystatin. It will go away for a day and be back for a week and 1/2. Ugh. I want to go back to my cloth, but if it is yeast, isn't that hard to do? Frustrated! (Btw like I said it's a small area, and it's red and has some tiny bumps)

Re: Diaper Rash

  • You can try doing a little nakey time! My lo loves it! No advice about the cloth tho. Good luck

  • Sounds exactly what my LO has. We tried everything!! Finally purchased Weleda diaper cream. It's amazing and worked in 18 hours!
  • When my son gets diaper rash we bathe him with baking soda in the tub water.  Helps clear him up after a couple of days.
  • We used nystatin cream for our LO's yeast infection but if it's just a diaper rash we use equal parts aquafor and maalox works quickly everytime
  • You can use cloth is you use 1/4 cup bleach in every load of diaper laundry, followed by an extra rinse to be sure it's removed. Also make sure you are using bleach on washcloths and towels to make sure they aren't holding yeast.

A red ring around the rectum can also indicate dietary intolerance or allergy.

  • Definitely try some nakey time. Some Vaseline in the area (after making sure it's dry) can help to keep feces & urine away from the skin. It also makes it less irritating to wipe.

We use buttpaste between diaper changes (in addition to the Vaseline).

  • Instead of wipes I have been using a warm wet cloth to wipe his butt. Doesn't seem as harsh as the wipes. Then patting dry the area. I then put Vaseline or butt paste on. I don't like to see my LO in pain. Makes me sad.
  • We started with butt paste and it didn't seem to help, I checked this board and thanks to the mama who said aquafor. I switched to just that and little mans bottom is doing much better!
  • Try cornstarch
  • Plain yogurt with probiotics will work well for yeast infections. Use it like diaper cream.
  • I'm not sure what nystatin is, but we use generic Lotrimin (for athlete's foot) and it works like a charm.  Put it under the Desitin for a few days.  My LO had a rash that was bleeding and it took about 5 days with the Lotrimin to clear up.
