my son is about to b 8 months old and we have been increasing solids. Any time we give him baby food that is more chunky, he gags on it. Has anyone else experienced this?
There is a "solids" thread that is alittle farther down that covered this alittle. I am no help as my sons greatest accomplishment in the solids department has been that he had 6 spoons of pureed.
Yup. Gagging is how a baby learns to move food around in his mouth. Totally normal and nothing to worry about. Choking is different, and trust me, you'll know the difference when you see it. As long as it's only gagging, keep on going as long as he's not getting frustrated. The gag reflex in babies is much further forward than an adults, purely to teach them to keep the food forward while they chew it.
I also can't help much as we are doing baby led weaning. However from my experiences with BLW, they use gagging to know what their limits are. I would say keep at it and they will get used to the new textures and sizes. Also, make sure you're not putting the spoon to far in, let them take the food off the spoon and move it to the back of their mouth themselves.
