Pumping Mommies

DS (baby 2) is 2 months old now. i am back to work and struggling. I produce too much milk to comfortably feed him every 2 hours so for the past few weeks i have been pumping only and bottle feeding. That is going great...HOWEVER now that i am back to work i am unable to pump every 2 hours (my employers will let me but i have to clock out so i am losing so much time on the clock if i pump every 2 hours) SO i go longer in between pumping. Will the aching and soreness go away or should i just suck it up and go back to 2 hours? I was unable to breast feed with my DD and dont want to stop and put my son on formula. The amount i am having to clock out for and the cost of formula comes out to about the same. Thankfully my boobs arent taxed  ;) Im looking for advice and help if anyone can offer any!

Re: Pumping Mommies

  • Your boobs should adjust to become less sore with time. I pump once in the am, at lunch, and once in the afternoon. It does definitely add to your day but mine eats 24oz at daycare so I have to pump as often as I can.

  • at 2 months he is eating the same amount! Im worried that by only pumping 3 times a day even with the soreness my supply will deminish with time
  • I pump at work, three times a day. I manage to pump at least 4 oz per session and take supplements to ensure that I am able to pump this amount. At home, my baby is given the breasts only and my milk supply has not been affected. My baby is now 5 months old and I've been back to work 2 and a half. The soreness of your boobs will go away. It seems that there a period of time that all nursing mothers have to endure before it gets better.
To get to the point where I can say that I'm comfortable with pumping I had to experiment with different pumps. Not all pumps are created equal! The pump I have is the Medela Symphony Breastpump. This model is a hospital grade pump and I found a place to rent it for $60 a month in my area. A well worth investment in my opinion. This things works wonders and it takes all the milk out.Best of all, NO SORE NIPPLES!!!
Over the course, I've suffered with nipple blisters and blebs (not easy and very painful), not sure caused by what, but just remember that it will get better and the discomfort is temporary. I hope this helps.... good luck!

I also didn't mention that DD is 17 weeks and I also pump after her MON feed and before bed to keep up. If you can pump 24 oz in just 3 times at work I'm jealous. Seems like your supply is doing just fine :)
  • If you're worried about supply, Mother's Milk Tea or Fenugreek can help bolster it.
