Pregnant after 35

stupid back!

So I have had a pinched nerve feeling from my back down my whole right leg to the bottom of my foot for a couple months now.  Yesterday I noticed it felt more concentrated in my back only and it really felt like that sharp pain  you get right when your back cracks.  Well today I can not even get up without horrible pain.  I can not walk without being doubled in half.  Its so frustrating as my children are sort of running wild here. My 13 year old DD is helping but only to a certain degree.

I can usually count on this happening at least once during my pregnancies...thank YOU relaxin hormone.  Actually what seemed to due me in was my 2nd my whole labor was back labor and she delivered turned over the wrong way and was a pretty large baby.  It was really rough on my back during and after labor.  For months I had such back pain.  Every since then I randomly get knocked down like this from time to time and definately during pregnancy.

I wish there was just something I could do to just make it better!!

Re: stupid back!

  • :(  That sounds horrible.  I guess a heating pad offers no solace.  Hope it passes soon.

  • I was helped by chriopractic too. I hope you are feeling more like yourself soon.

  • That does sound awful :(  Hope it doesn't last too long.
  • During pregnancy there's probably not a ton that you can do. Ice always helps me more than heat does. Heat always intensifies my pain and makes me super super stiff. I get sciatic pain ALOT when pregnant. I have it not pregnant too but it just comes and goes and isn't that strong. During my last pregnancy, I could hardly move. It was really bad. My OB gave me therapy but I never went because between high risk appointments and kids at home and a full time job.. I didn't have time to go!! After you have your baby, it might be worth getting checked. Have they ever done an MRI?

  • I also definitely recommend a chiropractor if you haven't tried that already, and maybe a prenatal massage if you can swing it. I had terrible back pain about a week and a half ago, and after a trip to the chiropractor and a massage, I'm ok again.  I'm still needing to avoid lifting much or overdoing it on the activity, but worlds better than I was.  Sorry you're in pain - back pain, esp sciatica which it sounds like you may be experiencing, is awful.

  • My husband had a back spasm once, and whenever he has any sort pain, ailment etc he runs to a dr asap!  Well he ended up going to therapy for it.  So now he is a back expert (so he thinks)..Whenever my back acts up he tells me all I need to do is the stretches he was taught and ice it.  Whenever I attempt the stretches it takes a bit of pain and immediately turns it into I can not move without crying out sort of pain that lasts several days.  And I HATE ice on.  I hate cold.  And it never really helps me at all.  He says all back pain comes from being overweight and not enough exercise.  Well I am a normal weight and when not pregnant I do T25 or insanity regularly.

So he never wants me to go to the dr because he says it worthless he has told me what to do...so I don't go.  Therapy is not possible for me anyways...not with all sorts of little ones.  I called once about Chiropractice care and it was really expensive.  They wanted to do xrays and stuff before they even started anything on you.  I would not do that during pregnancy anyways.

last night was really bad.  The pain was non stop.  Today its a bit better.  Mostly turning over or trying to stand hurts really bad but once I am up it is manageable.  My goal is to be able to grocery shop on Saturday.  DH has a super bowl party here sunday so I have to make a million things.  The kids and I all did school from my bed today.
  • I can not recommend acupuncture enough. I have a herniated disk in L4-L5 and was on pain management for a year and a half. I could barely stand or walk. They did several lumbar epidural injection procedures on me, none of which worked. They told me I needed major back surgery which I was terrified to do. Reluctantly, as a last resort, I tried acupuncture. I was pain free after just a few sessions and have remained pain free for the past three years! Never had surgery!

I had a similar experience with my neck.  Severe pain for ten years managed with medication and chiropractic care along with traction.  3 sessions at acupuncture and I'm pain free.  Never had to go back.  I don't know that it works for everyone, but it sure worked for me.  But hell I was at the point that I would have tried hypnosis or snake oil if I thought it might trick my brain into not feeling pain anymore.  I think there comes a time when you get desperate enough to try things you don't believe in.  Made a believer out of me.  I don't care how or why it worked.  :)

  • I have never had acupuncture myself but that's interesting!  I did disability management for 8 years and I did have a lot of people swear my acupuncture.

My husband has a horrible back. He has several herniations.. 5 total.  Of course, they tried the whole therapy thing which did not work at all for him. He's really tall and it just didn't work.  Then of course we went the whole epidural injection route.. he had 2 of them.. literally 0 relief.  It made him numb for the afternoon after he had the injection and then nothing after that.  I've seen some people gain relief but it just depends. Then he had a laminectomy in 2011.  He did really well for a about 2 years.  Pain free.. tingling/numbness.. all radicular pain was gone.  Then he returned and it hasn't let up.  He doesn't quite have drop foot but I worry that's where he'll end up.  He can stand for maybe.. 10-20 minutes and then he has to sit.  He can't sit at our kitchen table at dinner time when his back is really bad. He can't sleep in our bed sometimes. It's pretty bad.

We did buy a kit from Young Living essential oils.. the panaway layered with peppermint did give him some pain relief.  I pretty much have to lather him up with them but at least it helps.   Maybe I'll ask him if he wants to try acupuncture though! I think he would do just about anything at this point to make the pain stop and I"m terrified he's going to have long term damage.

  • i am totally fascinated by the idea of accupunture and would love to try it.  I searched desperately to find a place to have it done when my last baby was breech and then transverse and I was weeks and then days till my due date.  I had read sometimes it can help with that.  We live in a rural area surrounded by small towns.  There just is not options like that available anywhere within a reasonable drive.  I love alternative medicine and treatments.  Around here there is little health care available at all.  There is one pediatrician practice in the whole county.  There is only one GYN/OB too.  I actually go to one out of the county that uses the hospital in this county.   I used to go to midwifes that were a couple counties away.  But once I had 4 children and was keeping my kids home for school it was just too time consuming to drive to my appointments when they were so far.  And the hospital they used was over an hour away...thats pretty far when you tend to have pretty short labors.
  • I feel your pain op! As I'm laying here on the couch with a heating pad. I don't have the pain going down my leg, but I thought something was going to give out today when I was walking. I think it's my SI joint. Might try physical therapy. I used to go to the chiro, but I've been afraid since being pregnant.
