I'm bad at curtains. I don't really like them, and I generally want as
much light as possible, which even sheers block. My DH, however, likes
blackout curtains that provide insulation (we live in a cold, snowy
place). The nursery, which we've been building from the rafters and
subflooring, definitely needs something, and probably blackout curtains,
as the window is west-facing (for those on mobile I'm due with our
first in April).
We had wanted something like this:

But
in a kids' pattern or color, as we're doing a woodland theme. We
thought the branch and the flowy look would work well. However, when I
went to do the measurements for it, I'm thinking that the space is too
small. This is a dormer, and you can see from the pics that there isn't a lot of space for a gracefully arching branch.

The
square underneath is a radiant heater, so any curtains have to end
above it, which also limits the possibilities. Please ignore the fact
that the trim is unfinished, and the window is dirty, etc. This is still
under construction.

So what kind of curtain design would you
do in this space, assuming you had to use blackout curtains? Ideally it
would be something that could open and close easily, and have some whimsy to it. I'm good at sewing, so I'll be making these myself. We don't want blinds.
Any advice appreciated. TIA!!
