2nd Trimester

Ovarian Cyst

Hi ladies,
Today I had an ultrasound. I'm 18 weeks, 4 day pregnant and found out I'm having a girl. I'm so happy, I can't wait to meet my little girl. Also some alarming news, they found cysts on my ovaries but told me i shouldn't worry. I'm having a morw in depth ultra sound next week to see exactly what is going on. I can't help buy worry. Is or has anyone gone through this?

Re: Ovarian Cyst

  • I had a cyst that was discovered during my first pregnancy (it ended in early m/c NOT related to the cyst)
Since then the Dr. was tracking it and they diagnosed it as possible endometrioma because it was not going away on it's own after 6 mos.
Anyway now I'm pg again (no trouble concieving) and at the 8 wk. u/s they still saw the cyst and it had shrunk a little.  The tech said "doesn't appear to be interfering with baby"
Now at 14 weeks baby has a strong hb and my Dr. is not worried about it at all.  He said a lot of women have cysts and go on to have many healthy babies.
If the Dr. isn't worried I wouldn't worry either.  If you have concerns, talk to your Dr. about them and ask him why he's not worried.
Ultrasounds are great, but they can cause unnecessary worry.  My mother never had an u/s with me because they weren't routine then.  Imagine all the women who were blissfully unaware of their cysts and had healthy babies and never knew a cyst was there.

Congrats on your baby girl :D

  • I havent but my friend had them while pregnant. It caused a lot of bleeding and worry the first trimester, but stopped around 13 weeks and she has had no complications since. She is 27 weeks now.
  • I did fertility treatments which caused them on both ovaries. Doctor told me not to worry about them and they haven't given me any grief, thus far. I'm 19w today. I'm sure your doctor will just want to keep an eye on them :)
  • I have cysts in both i was told it would be hard to conceive and here I am preggo when I wasn't planning on it. My doc told me it's nothing to worry about for the most part we've made it past the first two major hurdles 1 we got pregnant 2 we got to the second trimester. My major concern is how far the alphabet my boobs are going to go! Good luck and congrats on the baby girl!
  • I had cysts as well. One burst during first tri and we thought it might be an ectopic pregnancy (before we knew it was a cyst) but it was totally fine and here I am 18 weeks with no pain or issues. From what I understand cysts are really normal in pregnancy. The ovary that you ovulate from usually develops a cyst and sometimes they hang around. Many women have them with no issue. Good luck!

  • I had very severe ovarian and fallopian cysts back in 2008 (well before I was pregnant). I had minor surgery to remove them but it did not impact my fertility at all.

In fact almost all women have them, they just go away or pop on their own. Only when the get big do you really feel them.

They are more common during pregnancy since your hormones are stronger than usual. So don't freak out!

  • Not uncommon for a pregnant woman to have cysts develop or fibroids. With all the hormonal changes your body goes through it can happen fairly frequently.

In most cases, there is no cause for concern. The doctor will likely just monitor it and monitor your symptoms (or lack of) concerning the cysts.

  • I have a history of ovarian cysts and fibroids. As long as they are not close to the baby or the placenta in the uterus you are fine. From my understanding cysts in the ovaries can only affect the conception.
  • I had a dermoid cyst on my left ovary. It was about 6 inches long (so like the size of a fat eggplant) when they finally found and removed it. They had to take the whole ovary. We started trying to conceive because I only had one ovary left and thought it would take a bit of time. To our surprise, it only took like 5 months.

A couple of my friends have the smaller fibroid cysts. They were told pretty much they would never get pregnant, then two of the three did. They didn't have any complications. I don't think it should be much trouble as long as it doesn't rupture. I think cysts cause more of a problem getting pregnant than during pregnancy.
  • I had a cyst on my left ovary that was measuring 5cm wide at my twelve week ultrasound at my eighteen week ultrasound it was completely gone. If your doctor saids not to worry dont worry! Really! They are completely normal to have and come and go as they please according to my doctor :) Hopefully this helps a bit. I know its hard not worry especially when your growing a precious LO but honestly you'll be fine baby will be fine and that all that matters.

  • This post was very helpful for me, I had my anatomy scan yesterday and she also found a cyst on my ovary that wasn't there at my 12 weeks sonogram. I'm a little nervous, only because I haven't spoken to the doctor yet. My sonograms aren't followed by doctor appointments and they only call if something is wrong or they need a better look. So I'm wondering if he will call today about the cyst or wait until my appointment in 2 weeks. Thank you all for making me feel a little better.
