Success after IF

Bad news from RE

Today we met with our RE to discuss our future FET. We talked about success rates and a successful IVF he said that it may be slightly higher depending on the embryos. We have 2 5 day blasts left. They are fair and poor quality. We transferred a good and fair the first time. Got pregnant with twins and lost one around 8 weeks but we have our beautiful DD now. I'm feeling discouraged that our embryos aren't good enough. We won't do IVF again, so this is it. Has anyone had success with low grade embryos?

Re: Bad news from RE

  • Sorry you are in this spot. I know @Ruthie04‌ has twins from fair grade blasts. There was a gal on PAIF a bit before me that had done multiple transfers that finally got pregnant on their last poor quality blast.

If the embie made it to freeze, I think there is hope! Good luck!!

  • I know of two that had BFNs or m/c with really good embies and got ku with take home babies with their low quality embryos. Those embies still have a chance!! We aren't doing ivf again either (unless we win the lotto or something). So I feel you there

Yup! One of them was so far behind in development, it didn't even get a grade. Even my nurse was floored when it worked. My clinic won't freeze fair or poor quality blasts, so I don't have FET experience. But, I can definitely vouch that "ugly" embryos can make perfect babies. Thinking of you and best of luck!

  • We had one frozen embryo after our IVF and it had been the worst of the bunch as we transferred the best looking two (of which I got pregnant with a singleton.)  I figured the FET wouldn't work given that the embryo wasn't graded very well but then as I started reading about embryo grading I came to find that there really isn't a great correlation between higher grade embryos and success rates.  I think doctors grade them to give themselves a better sense of control, but the reality seems to be that science has not advanced far enough to really be able to know what a successful embryo looks like on day 3, 4, 5, etc.

What does seem to affect success rates is the method of freezing.  I think almost all clinics nowadays use vitrification, or fast freezing which apparently is far superior to the way they slow froze embryos years ago.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

    This Cluttered Life

  • Thanks for the reassuring words ladies. I wasn't sure I wanted to go ahead and do the FET, but I think I'll reconsider. My doctor thinks we have a 60% chance. I wasn't sure if he was just trying to make us feel better.
  • Our DS is from a cycle with no good embies. It wasn't FET, but miracles are possible even when nothing seems promising. GL!
