Group B positive

Hi Ladies. At my 37 week appointment they told me I tested positive for Group B. The Dr. reassured me it's no big deal & I will get antibiotics when I go in for delivery. Of course I googled it and now I'm freaked out. Anyone else test positive? Was your Dr. relaxed about it? Anyone test positive with a previous pregnancy? I know I shouldn't worry especially after talking with the Dr. but it freaked me out..just need some reassurance from Internet strangers :P

Re: Group B positive

  • I tested positive with my first pregnancy and negative the second pregnancy.  When you go in for your delivery they will give you antibiotics.  As long as you have the antibiotics during delivery everything is fine.  Since I was induced with my first pregnancy and already in the hospital when labor started, I am not sure if the doctors make you come in earlier if your Group B positive and you go into labor on your own versus if you weren't positive.  My doctor was also very relaxed about it and just said that I should be sure to mention that I was Group B positive when I arrived at L&D.  Good Luck!

  • I know it is not a big deal at all. A lot of women have it and they just simply drip an additional antibiodic in your IV to keep baby safe. One thing I can suggest, however, is to be vocal if you know you have it!! A close girlfriend of mine had a baby this past spring. She tested positive for it in the routine test, knew she tested positive for it and assumed the hospital she delivered at would handle it from there. Well, there was clearly some kind of miscommunication or maybe just a slip up on the staff's part who was caring for her but she was never given the antibiodic and her baby ended up staying an extra day in the hospital on antibiodics because of it. So now she warns everyone if you know you have it, remind the nurses on duty!!

  • Thanks ladies! I will def make sure I am vocal about reminding the nurses!
  • I was neg with DD. Pos this time. Dr said usually not a big deal for full term babies. Will just need an antibiotic. I'm nervous about it too though.

  • I get my results tomorrow. I haven't googled it and don't really plan to (for now). When they did the swab last week though the doctor made it sound like it was no big deal and just mentioned needing antibiotics at delivery if positive.

  • Positive first pregnancy and this pregnancy also. It wasn't an issue last time. I labored at home all day then went in when things got intense. I was able to have my med free birth as planned. I just asked for a port so they could hook up the IV and then let me walk. You only need to get to the hosp sooner if your water breaks.
  • I was negative with my first, positive with my second and positive with this pregnancy. Not a big deal, they just gave me IV antibiotics.

  • Dr said it's completely normal. You don't even know you have it, it's a bacterial infection that is cleared up with iv antibiotics during labor to make sure baby can't get sick from it.
  • I was positive my first but negative with this one. With my first I was induced and started the antibiotics as soon as I got there. My doctor told me if my water had broken then I would need to come in immediately regardless if my contractions were still far apart. I talked to one of my doctor's this pregnancy and she said if I got to the hospital and wanted the antibiotic again-to just ask for it since I had it with a previous pregnancy. She also said honestly, she would because a lot of change (bacteria) can occur in three or so weeks.
  • I was positive with my first and like others have said it really was no big deal. I was vocal about it at the hospital and made sure I got my antibiotics continuously like my Dr. said I should. My Dr. told me that if my water broke on its own I would have to head straight to the hospital.
  • Thanks ladies made me feel a lot better!

I'm positive, too, and like everyone else my doctor isn't too concerned about it. She told me to come right in if my water breaks, otherwise come in when contractions are 3-5 mins apart, erring on the side of being there early to get at least 4 hours of IV antibiotics in before delivery. Longer is better but of course they'll still send you home if you're there TOO early. If I don't get the full course they'll do a full blood workup on the baby but it's not the end of the world. The chances of something bad happening are quite small. I tested positive when they found the bacteria in my urine in the first tri so I've been through the freak out/calm down routine. I definitely agree with everyone else in telling everyone you see at the hospital that you are GBS positive, even when you first get there and tell the lady at the desk you're in labor. Don't rely on everyone to read your file. Good luck! It'll be fine!!

  • Again no worries, I had it with my first and not the second. Although sometimes the affects on baby is dire only 1 out of a thousand babies (even 1 is too many of course) have a very bad reaction to gbs when completely untreated. So since you are being treated just relax and enjoy!
  • I got a positive test result today. I am a little freaked out too. My dr also was like no big deal. I kept asking how I got it. I guess if you are a carrier it comes and goes during your life. Now I feel like the crazy lady thinking in going to give it to my husband or spread some kind of germ somewhere. I am having a c section and dr did mention that baby would not be exposed because of that.
  • I was positive for my first, negative the second time. I only got one round of antibiotics the first time so they did a blood sample from LO and I had to stay at the hospital for 24 hours.
