Anterior placenta

Has anyone been to the dr and been told they have an anterior placenta or placenta previa and what exactly I need to be worried about.... I googled it and it kind of freaked me out!!

Re: Anterior placenta

  • If you weren't sure what your doctor was talking about, you should have asked more questions. Please do not be afraid to talk to your doctor - they are the best ones to give you answers on your particular situation.

Please search this board - you will find many other women who have an anterior placenta and/or partial or full placenta previa, which should help put your mind at ease.

Long story short on previa is that it can resolve itself and move upwards as your pregnancy progresses. If it doesn't move, you may need a C section as vaginal delivery can be dangerous. Your OB should monitor the placement of your placenta throughout your pregnancy now that he/she has the heads up that this could be an issue.

  • I know he kind of brushed it off and said it was no big deal nothing to worry about and after that I googled it... I will definitely have more questions when I see him next month! I just didn't realize it could be something serious. I still don't feel the baby moving which is also a bit frightening! He said that was okay too... Just wanted to see if anyone actually has been through it. I will be having a c-section regardless as my first baby was breech and resulted in a c-section
  • Well do you have an Anterior Placenta or Placenta Previa, they're different places.  An AP is when the placenta is between baby and your stomach making it harder to feel anything early on.  PP is when the placenta is covering or partially covering the cervix.  Your doctor said it's nothing to worry about.  If you don't trust his opinion and would rather trust google then stop going to the doctor that WENT TO MED SCHOOL.  You're having a c/s so neither is a big deal.  PP can cause spotting so if you have PP and are spotting you can let your doc know, but otherwise this is a normal pg.

  • There's a big difference between an AP and PP.  If your doctor isn't concerned, you probably just have an AP like most of us.  Stop googling!

  • I just have an anterior placenta and this is the 3rd time. It's not a big deal, you just won't feel movement until later. IF you have an AP and PP you definitely need to ask your Dr more questions!

  • Fyi to the moms commenting above you can have both...
No they aren't the same however, it is possible for your previa to be anterior as well. Mine is. To the OP it can move, unless you start bleeding that's the only main concern with it. Talk to your doc more about it at your next appt.

  • For those who have had an anterior placenta in the past, when did you start to feel movement?
  • Kind of hijacking the thread, but does anyone know that if you have an AP, is it safe to have a C section? We are planning on having a Csection this time due to C's birth complications.

My doctor told me they would have to cut through the placenta if I had a c section with anterior placenta. Hoping for another vaginal delivery.
And for previous poster, I've been feeling tiny kicks since around 18 weeks, but don't expect my husband or son to be able to feel any kicks from the outside until 25 weeks or so.

I actually started feeling movement at 17w. I am 20w4d now and she has been BEATING me up since then, every night. Since I have seen so much talk on here about how you won't feel much movement if you have an AP I just assumed mine was not, so I asked the US tech at my A/S appt. She told me that I actually DID have an AP and my LO was kicking through it!!! Shes going to have some strong little legs! I know that it is not common but even the Dr. and my DH have felt kicks from the outside. I guess everyone is different!

  • I am having a c section and I have a AP and I am 19 weeks and still haven't felt movement..
  • I was told yesterday that I have a Low lying AP.  The doctor said that I should have an ultrasound at 28 weeks to see if it has worked itself out, which it most commonly does.

I actually started definitively feeling the baby's movements yesterday and today, eeeeks  (I'm nearly 20 weeks now)

The doctor said that it sometimes doesn't happen until between 20-24 weeks for FTMs especially with an AP.

He said it isn't anything to be really worried about, especially at this stage, but I did read a few medical articles stating that if it doesn't sort itself out, a C section is the safest way to deliver, especially if it is too near the cervix.

I have to keep reminding myself that stress is worse, so just breathe :)

  • Yeah after reading all these posts I feel a lot better about it. At first I was really scared but it seems to be a lot more common then I thought. Just trying to stay positive! My next ultrasound is on the 24th so I will know more.
  • I'm 21 weeks with an AP and my doc said it's nothing to worry about. It only makes it more difficult for him if he needs to do a c section. And if it becomes a PP then you define try need a c section. I feel sensations that I think are my baby girl but nothing that strikes me as oh yes that was a kick (but I'm also a FTM). Seriously get away from Google. Trust your doctor or get another doctor.
  • I have a low lying anterior placenta that is over my c-section scar. I am concerned regarding placenta accreta. When my OB brushed off my concerns, I decided to find a new OB. I have an appointment with a specialist on Friday to ease my concerns. IMO...if you have a concern and you feel brushed off or ignored...I'd be getting a second opinion. This is actually my second complication this pregnancy (first is that I'm Antigen E positive) and my first pregnancy was twins (never saw a specialist). I have come to the conclusion that my Drs office is more reactive not proactive. I personally need a Dr who listens to my concerns and is proactive with my health.
