Childcare

Hi All,

I am due in March and trying to figure out childcare for when I return back to work fulltime...

What is the going rate per hour for someone who watches your child but also has a child of their own they watch with yours?

Thanks for any advice, clearly, this is our first child! (-:

Re: Childcare

  • Completely depends on what area you are in
  • Loading the player...
  • It does depend on where you are located. I used to pay $35/day. Some places charge more when it's a newborn also. I'd look around and see what you could find. I now watch 3 kids myself, so I can stay at home after I have this baby, and I charge each child $150/week. I do know people who get a minimum of $175/week though.
  • Too many factors go in to it for us to give you an answer. How many kids total will be there, what are the qualifications of this person, where will they be watching your kid, etc

Depends mostly on your location, and on the type of care you're after. Living in a big city, sending your kid to a private care place where they offer education by qualified caregivers vs. living in a midwest suburb where a neighbor watches your kid alongside their own, for example.

ETA: search google, try something like care.com to see rates, or throw out the question to people in your community (like your church group or facebook friends)
  • This is ridiculous! I really wish TB would ban you and your cronies so the rest of us don't have to deal with your constant negativity or posts about the lost of the "community". I've been on lurking on this board since July and frankly I think it was about TB took a stance against the few that became drunk with the little power they were given. Since Joining TB, I think when you guys weren't playing at being mean girls there was some good advise but I never got the sense there was a community! Please go to the exclusive Facebook page you guys set up and join your other "community members" and leave the rest of us who are only trying to get through the next "x" number of weeks in peace!
  • @CynthiaD2014‌ Not quite sure what response got you so honked off, but PPs are correct. For example, what I have to pay for childcare here is completely different from what someone would pay 2 hours away in Northern VA. It also depends on what type of facility you are going to. This type of specific "me only" question is probably better suited to the local boards or Google. I'm pretty sure M15 moms in Switzerland, Germany, and locations from ALL ACROSS THE US are not going to be able to help OP.

You are absolutely correct and many of the comments addressed this in a mature manner. There are one or two people that I feel are very impressed with themselves and over the past couple of weeks have been particularly nasty. I'm sure when they wake up and read my comments they will reveal themselves by responding with their particular brand of insults.

Then why did you feel the need to vomit your opinion on all of us rather than addressing someone specifically? Go back to lurking because M15 doesn't want you.

Just an FYI, there are high quality educational centers in Midwestern suburbs. I live in one and my son goes to Montessori. It's not just a big city thing.

Otherwise, OP call around and get local rates. That is your best bet.

Obviously. I was illustrating a point, which is that prices vary based on type of care and location.
  • I wish TB would ban all the random posters who don't know what the search function is for.
We have discussed this, many times at length, months ago.

But as OP stated.....we can't help you here. You need to do the research yourself. We all did.

    That's how I picture you.

Now that you point it out, that is very accurate.
  • The cheapest I've found is just putting the baby in their crib and going to work. You can get one of those fancy guinea pig water bottles and fill it with formula for the baby to suck on when it gets hungry. I mean, babies don't do much, so you don't really need someone to watch them.... they're pretty boring for the first 6 months or so...
