Hello,
I am debating on if I wanna do the 3d u/s to see my angels face etc. It's $200 at my drs office. I asked my friends they said no wait the 5 more months and see her in person and the s/o thinks it's too expensive. What do u all think?

Hmmm. I find it strange that you are asking a bunch of Internet strangers if you should spend $200 of a 3D glimpse of your baby, but okay. I would say the first question should be can you afford to spend so much money on something completely superfluous? They don't even look very clear. That is the same price give or take for a great car seat.

That is just my opinion--if you have the $ to spend, and it's important to you, then do it. I wouldn't blow my money like that.

Personally, I can't imagine spending $200 on an elective ultrasound, but I don't know what that kind of money means to you. Like, if you saw $50 lying on the ground, is it not even worth your time to bend over to pick it up? Because if that's the case, then definately go for it.

Some people are into them, but when we got ours done (for free, as part of a study at the hospital) I wouldn't have paid for it if I had to - it's cute, but the baby doesn't really look like they do on the outside since they still have a bit more growing to do. I say if you want to do it and it'll make you happy, then go for it. But if you're on the fence, it's not the best thing ever. Just my two cents!

I would not. I personally think elective ultrasounds aren't a great idea, and many doctors share the same idea. Not chastising you or anyone else who is getting one, but you asked for opinions. That's a lot of money for something that could be potentially harmful (there is no evidence that it is or isn't). Ultrasounds for medical reasons are necessary, boutique 3D ultrasounds aren't.

I wouldn't pay it. It's elective and not medically necessary. Plus those pictures creep me out! I knew a lot of people who did it though and loved it. But I would wait until month 8 or 9. My doctor told me she had someone beg for one at their 20 week appointment and they cried because the baby looked like an alien! Haha

I had one done. I have the extra money.( mine was only 100 ) They do look like aliens..

I wanted to add.. I had mine at an OB/GYN office.. I don't know about going to just any ole person with a machine .

I can't imagine paying the money they ask for 3d ultrasounds, but I do think they are neat. We lucked out when I was pregnant with DS because there was a baby expo in the area and they did them for $10!!!!!!!!! We only got like 5 pictures, but that's a freaking steal. So, see if there are any baby shows/expo in your area that may have a 3d ultrasound vender. I found there is one coming late March here, so I might go again (although, it may be too early for 3d)

Former June15 mom lurking here. @firsttimer86‌ as others has said it really depends on how important you feel this is and how much money you really can afford to spend on it. Personally I would not spend that much money on a 3D u/s. However if you decide to do one I would wait until later, like 8 month, to do it because baby's facial features will be more clear then.

@btm013‌ I had a 3D u/s at week 20 with my DS as a "special treat" because the OB was delayed for our app and we had waited extremely long. Nothing alien like there, but they're still quite small with tiny arms and legs and not very clear facial features so I guess you'll get "more" for your money later on in the pregnancy

That being said - we got a Groupon for one of those boutique ultrasound places for only $50. So to me $200 seems a bit steep.

Idk why people get their panties in a bunch over elective ultrasounds. It's your baby and your money. Do whatever makes you happy!

I do think the babies look like little aliens in 3D though

Yes no one needs to get their panties in a bunch....... It's your money and your baby. They are neat and it's your baby so it shouldn't "freak" you out.....

I wouldn't call warning against the possible negative side effects of too much ultrasound "getting one's panties in a bunch." It is a valid thought to consider. OP asked for opinions. She got them.

My OB offers them any time we have ultrasounds. Most of the time baby moves too much or has arms and legs in the way to get decent pictures. I wouldn't pay extra for it.

I didn't see any responses warning the OP about the "negative side effects" of too many ultrasounds though.

My understanding was that OP was just asking if we thought $200 was too expensive... and that's what she wanted opinions on.

We all know they're unnecessary, that's why they're "elective".

When I was pregnant with my first I was curious about everything that was happening with my body during whole 40 weeks. I read about everything and of course had 3D ultrasound done. It was fun and I got to keep the videos of my boy moving around inside me, but honestly this time around I don't think it will make any sense for me to do this, since I have already done it and know there is not much to see. If it were my first I would still have it done though

P.S. I don't live in States so that 3D ultrasound cost me approximately $40. I think $200 is waaay to expensive (judging from where I live).

I am getting to know the staff at my doctors pretty well and the tech has done the 3d almost every week on me (we have thirty minute appointments and usually get the views the doctor needs in 10), it's kind of cool and I have a couple good photos from it, but I'm not sure I would shell out $200 even though we have the money.

That being said the "squee! Look at my baby!!" Thing wore off for me weeks ago so it might be worth it to someone only getting the normal amount of ultrasounds.

This comment here mentions it, as well as it has been brought up in countless other discussions about elective scans we have had on this board. I'm simply stating that it is worth bringing up the possible negative side effects of ultrasound as well as the expense. And having an opinion that differs from what a person wants to hear does not equate to getting ones panties in a bunch, in my opinion.

This person even said there is no evidence whether elective ultrasounds are truly harmful or not. I highly doubt that OP is going to give birth to a mutant because she got one extra ultrasound at her doctor's office. Why would her doctor offer her something that would be harmful to her baby?

My personal opinion (which is different than yours) is that people get their panties in a bunch over nonsense like this...

Yes @thelittlestbee‌ it does and I did say POTENTIAL harmful effects. And there are many doctors who do err on the side of caution with ultrasound. No one said she should or shouldn't, just to be aware of the fact that there is disagreement in the medical profession about how much is too much. And because ultrasound waves CAN change cells, it is a good idea to use caution. If you call that nonsense, well I don't know what to tell you. It is a quite valid medical controversy.

Here is just one article that refers to it, but there are many. We have also discussed this on the board many, many times. No one said OP should not do it, or that her baby would mutate (give me a break) but if you think it is "nonsense" to be informed of potential risks --that is your prerogative.

Very valid and important point. So many people say "my doctor would never do anything harmful"... "Or I completely trust my doctor" Although I am sure most doctors aren't doing anything intentionally wrong or misguided, people also need to be responsible and use their own heads sometimes... Doctors make mistakes all the time and procedures and medicines once considered "safe" are discovered not to be.... It is so important to read research and ask questions....I personally would not elect a procedure that is medically unnecessary because I don't see the value in it.

You both make valid points. I'm just saying that I (personally) think that if the doctor thinks ONE additional ultrasound is OK, I don't really see the harm. And that is MY personal opinion. You guys are certainly entitled to your own.

I appreciate you sharing an article with me which outlines the potential risks of a 4D ultrasound, since I will be having one in a few months. It gives me something to think about...

Either way, I don't think the OP even cares where this conversation went because she never even came back...

Yes there is a current AWHONN article out warning against having too many elective ultrasounds but it's just that...an article...... People can do what they want. I am not a unicorn..... But thanks for the glitter farts anyways.

If you can afford it, go for it. I personally would not spend an extra $200 for a 3d ultrasound. Luckily, at my OB's office, part of my A/S was 3d. And they do another 3d U/S toward the end, too.

I appreciate the opinions. It's what I asked for. I don't think I'm gonna do it. It's a lot of money and unless my Dr feels like being a nice lady and giving it to me for free I shouldn't spend that money. I can get my baby something nice for that amount or even buy myself some maternity clothes since I'm growing out of my regular clothes lol.
