EBF Babies

Do you feed on demand? Do you feed on a schedule? If so, what is your schedule?

My LO feeds on demand and the kid snacks all day and night. I'm thinking I need to transition to a schedule.

Re: EBF Babies

  • I feed on demand at home and on the weekends.

  • On demand, though I had to do a little scheduling overnight to get away from the snacking every hour or two thing.

  • On demand... But kinda on a schedule. I bf him when he wakes up, before both his naps, in the late afternoon, and before bed. It's my timing, I guess, but if he wanted to kick it up or lost interest, I'd be cool with either. Usually the late afternoon feeding is because he's cranky and asking for it.

With my DD, she's definitely not allowed to snack whenever. She gets breakfast when she wakes up, she can have her choice of fresh fruit or homemade muffin for snack around 10 am, lunch, and then I usually make her wait for dinner. She used to get an afternoon snack, but I found she wasn't ever hungry enough to eat a good dinner, so I stopped it. If she's really hungry, she's always welcome to have some veggies, like carrot sticks or cucumber slices, etc. And she can have a glass of milk whenever she'd like.

I'm about the same as @joyfullyfound‌ My LO eats when he wakes up, before both naps, and at bedtime. Sometimes we'll have a night feeding in there, or a late afternoon if he seems dissatisfied. He gave up the having the late afternoon feeding relatively recently.

ETA: we also do breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a couple of snacks for solids throughout the day.
  • I feed on demand.
  • Before I started slowly drying up I was EBF and tried to feed on demand before I found out my LO has no off button and would keep feeding with milk pouring out of her mouth. So I scheduled every 2 hours.

  • On demand. This usually means before and after every sleeping period, so every 30 minutes - 2 hours. Sometimes we stretch it to 3 hours, but 2 is probably average. Lately, this has been day and night. Mama needs a break!

  • After sleep and before bed at night, so usually 4 times during the day, and 2 MOTN sessions.

  • I made a spreadsheet and kept it on the kitchen table just marking when she did what, as far as eating and sleeping, then I made a schedule off of her patterns. I love spreadsheets. Team dork!
  • Liam is EBF and in day care. I feed him when he wakes up/I wake him up at 6 then he gets three bottles at day care usually 9, noon and 3 I often nurse him around 5 (more for my supply's sake since my last pump was at 1) and again before bed at 7.

He eats three meals, maybe a snack.

On weekends I don't use the same schedule day care does, I go off of his cues but it ends up being very similar.

  • Well, on demand, but that kind of means on schedule... He has recently started stretching the time between feedings and we're now at about 5 per day - morning wake-up, before morning nap, one before afternoon nap, one early evening and then before bed. He sleeps through the night, so none at night.

I also track all the things like a dork! I kind of scan the timing of feeding and sleeping and then encourage a schedule from there.
  • On demand, but at this point we have a pretty regular routine.  Generally, when she wakes up in the a.m. and when she wakes from each nap, then before bed and at least 2X in the MOTN.  But right now she is teething and so yesterday she wanted to BF more and last night she must have nursed 5X.  She will actually crawl over to me and pull on my shirt during the day when she wants to nurse.

  • On demand at home (at night/morning) and on the weekends. There's no schedule because sometimes he's growing and wants to nurse more often or doesn't feel well/teething and nurses less. He usually eats every 3-4 hours now that he eats 3 meals a day and a snack.
