XP: Babyproofing the house

Hi,

My LO obviously isnt crawling yet but I wanted to get a jump start on babyproofing our house. But I have no idea what I need to do. Do I really need to bolt the dresser to the wall?

So tell me, what steps are you taking? Are you going to do everything all at once? Or taking a more gradual approach?

Are you going just cover outlets and tack down cords or are you going for gold and hiring a company to glue down every movable object?

I have no idea where to begin. Can anyone help me out?

Thanks!

  • We've baby proofed a few things as DD has because more mobile. We have the outlets covered and recently put "bumpers" on things that have sharp edges since she's pulling herself up now. But nothing on our cabinets yet.

  • Fallowing this post, dd just started crawling and we literally hadn't even thought if baby proofing. Feel like horrible parents, we are ftp and just didn't think she would be in the move yet.
  • We've put corner protectors on furniture and made sure all the cords are out of reach. In the process of bolting furniture and clasping cupboards soon. No stairs, so no need for gate.

  • We just did this today, so it's fresh in my mind.  :)  We replaced all outlet covers with these.  We also put locks on lower kitchen cabinet doors and the cabinet doors in our TV stand so DD can't get into them.  We strapped the TV to the wall (it's not mounted) and also strapped the furniture in her bedroom to the wall so it doesn't tip if she tried to climb on it.  In our room, we strapped only the tall bureau we have which is most likely to tip.  We also installed locks at the top of our bi-fold laundry door, and on our double pantry doors and double closet door in the hallway (because they don't close securely and DD kept getting the doors open).  Other than that, we moved or hid obvious cords and moved any objects on tables/shelves that she could easily reach as she's now pulling herself up to standing position, and tries to grab for them.

We got a free consultation from a childproofing company, and one of the tips he shared was really helpful -- get in the habit now of closing doors to rooms that you don't want your LOs wandering into (e.g., bathroom, master bedroom, etc.).  If they're used to seeing a closed door from a young age, they might not even try to get into it / know there's anything back there.
  • We bolted the bookcase to the wall in LO's bedroom. We have a few other bookcases/dressers that could tip, but that's the only room I ever leave him alone in (or when he's old enough to get out of his crib). We did outlet covers, and we close off rooms we don't want him in. I also did cabinet locks for under the kitchen sink and the TV console. The only other cupboards he can reach in the kitchen have non-sharp, non-breakable, non-toxic things in them.
