Babies on the Brain

Trying hard not to judge right now

I really strive to be a live and let live mom and not judge other mama choices, but I'm struggling today.  A friend took her weeks-old newborn to Disneyland...in the middle of the highly publicized measles problem over there.  I just, I just can't not judge.  :(

  • We were thinking about going to DW in the fall. The no vaccine thing is my hang up. Baby will be a few months old.

  • I know, it's scary out there these days. I'm mostly a "germs build immunity" kind of mom, but not when it comes to major diseases.

  • Allie isn't fully vaccinated either. She had a reaction and they won't give them to her now. :( she gets the mist for flu

Disney World is in Florida. The outbreak is in Disneyland which is located in California. If Disney World in Florida is what you were speaking of, then have fun!

This is a pretty silly response. MW's baby will still be too little for most vaccines at just a few months old. Regardless of which park I don't blame her for being nervous about going to one of those places with a baby. Seeing that ANY major theme park was the hotbed of a lethal disease should give anyone pause.

And in terms of scale and probability, DW is much larger and has way more tourists so the risk of communicable diseases would arguably be much higher.

I had forgotten that. She is exactly the reason why everyone else needs their vaccinations, everyone!

Add to that the higher numbers of international tourists who may come from somewhere that has different vaccination standards than the U.S. and it remains a frightening proposition right now.

You are exactly right. My point was just that everyone except OP was referring to Disney World but it's actually Disneyland, which is on the complete opposite side of the country.

Most other countries, thankfully, have stricter vaccine requirements than the US. And I can't speak for all international tourists or people who move here from other countries, but by and large all my international coworkers think anti-vax Americans are BSC. As one of my Pakistani coworkers put it "I've seen that shit first hand - why would I ever gamble with my life like that?!"

  • It's spread through the air, so if there aren't any affected people there, shouldn't the baby be fine?
Open ventilated areas are safer than closed rooms, etc.
  • Just so we are clear,The measles aren't the only concern with having an unvaccinated infant and child. Do nt forget there are other diseases on the rise. Unfortunately Allie already had chicken pox. I do not want to do that with an infant. Just because it's airborne and open spaces yada yada does not mean there isn't a chance.

The virus that causes measles can hang suspended in the air for over two hours after an infected person coughs or sneezes, or even just yells or laughs (things that I assume are pretty common at an amusement park). It is so contagious that a person infected with measles can infect 90% of the people that they come into contact with. People are contagious for 4 - 7 days before showing signs or symptoms of the disease. (CDC, yo)

So, yeah, I'd rather hang out in a park with someone potentially infected with measles over a small, closed room. But her concern is excruciatingly valid.
