Hand me Downs

A friend just called me this morning and said that she had a ton of things her son 7 months didn't wear or use that is almost brand new or never used. I told her she I would love them, and thought it was very generous. How do most of you FTM feel about hand me downs and I also offered to give her something for them. She said no, I didn't need to, but I was just wondering how you all felt about hand me downs.

Opinons please.

Re: Hand me Downs

  • I'm pregnant with my third. Hand me downs are AMAZING.  A lot of the things you think you *need*, you only end up using once or twice.  You'll save a lot of money if you accept the hand me downs.

  • I would love to have access to hand me downs! We are the second of our siblings/cousins/friends to have a baby so not a lot of hand me down opportunities, but I think it's a great way to save money, and have access to clothing items that will only be worn a handful of times anyway since babies grow so fast.
The one friend that had kids before use offered us some things and I'm excited that a lot of the basics will be taken care of so I can save my money for fun outfits and other things
  • Ok, Thats exactly what I was thinking...Would you offer to give your friend or anyone some money for the hand me downs? @smashbaby111 and @cpage2211
  • @scharle3‌ You could offer something, but if they aren't worried about it, then I wouldn't either.
  • I've been offering something in return, but all all offers this far have been refused :) Hand me downs are awesome! Babies grow so fast in the first years that clothes only get worn a few times (If at all) before they grow out of them.
  • I am all for hand me downs, only the things in good condition though! I am very lucky as I have lots of sisters and aunts whom have already given me loads of baby stuff! Very blessed ;;)
  • Much of our newborn stuff is hand me downs - including our crib. We just bought a new mattress :) I always feel very grateful for the ££ saved!
  • ok thanks for the comments.
  • If you have the opportunity to get hand me downs I would take it!! Some people have clothes for different seasons then the size their baby is, so they are still brand new with tags! They also grow so fast! If they are in good condition I would definitely accept them! I had a little girl a year and a half ago and still need to get clothes for my baby girl im having now, just because of how many she ruined. My first had a lot of allergies/ stomach issues, so she was always spitting up and had diahrea the first 4 months so that is why she ruined so many. So between that and growing so fast, you can never have too many clothes ☺️
  • I love hand me downs, we are pretty much relying on them for this baby. All the babies in the last 13 years in my large family have been boys so we have nothing for this little girl. We are using my sons gender neutral clothes and able to use the big things we had with him like crib, swing, chairs, car seat and stuff.
  • Hand me downs are a huge blessing, that's such an awesome gift. The fun part is to be able to someday do the same when you have a pregnant friend or a friend with a child ... Or giving to even someone you don't know that might still need them. Yay for giving people
  • I have had NO hand me down offers. Makes me sad. :(

I'd take all I could get!
  • My cousin & my boyfriends sister and her wife both have 6 month old daughters, we're getting their hand me downs and I'm super thankful ! I am a ftm :)
    I'd say , take them ! It'll save you a lot !
  • Majority of my 6 year old sons clothes have been hand me downs since he was a baby and now going on my third boy and still using most of the clothes my oldest had. I'm all for hand me downs.
  • A friend of mine actually gathered a bunch of hand-me-downs and gave them as a shower gift. At first I raised an eyebrow, but it was awesome having all those clothes and toys and stuff ready to go as my little guy grew! Take what you can get and just remember to pay it forward when your LO's get bigger!

  • Hand me down's are the greatest thing ever!  Especially for a newborn.  They cannot wear them out because they are in them such a short time.  I will be getting a bunch of clothes from BFF for DS and she gave me the same for DD. I give them back when I'm done, because that is our deal.  I see no difference than garage sales and I love those, this way is free.
  • I am super thankful for all the hand me downs coming my way. My family has had several boys in the past year, one just this past November. Since babies grow quickly and don't even get to wear everything you may buy or receive, its nice to save the money and use it towards other necessities. One weird, I thought, situation that came up with a co-worker was that they received hand me downs with the original owners initials on them. They were expecting them to be returned once the baby had outgrown them. To me this puts too much pressure to keep things "nice" for the return to want to use them.
  • Im a FTM and i love them! Saves on things i wont have to buy and i get stuff from my twin nephews who are 1 and my neighbor who has a 1 year old. I do buy some stuff but i never turn down a big bag of clothes and toys!
  • My boys have many hand me downs and consignment sale finds.

Make sure that you ask if she wants them back. If she does, you might want to mark the tags somehow to remember it was hers. Sometimes there can be hurt feelings due to a misunderstanding.

My two boys are getting a surprise May 2015!

  • Hand me downs are great!!!! My friend is letting me borrow her DDs ( she just turned 1) clothes, play pen, baby swing. It has helped a lot! I won't be having a shower since this is my 6th child but we have nothing for this LO and have to buy everything over!! My oldest is 16 and my youngest is 5yrs. I gave everything away after my 5yr old DS because we did not plan to have more children. This little girl was a surprise. So we are basically staring over! Lol The hand me downs and borrowing has been a huge blessing. I have also bought things off my local yard sale page as well. I bought a Arms Reach co-sleeper I wanted from a friend of mine for 25$! They are normally around 140$! I offered more but that's what she wanted. I feel very lucky as now we just have to get the car seat, crib, ( we will buy these new) and other smaller items:)

  • My best friend had a baby girl who turns one when I'm due, she has saved me most of her clothes and I'm so pleased as she has gave me so much I would never of thought to buy so many rompers and other bits, it's saved me £££'s
  • @scharle3‌ I offered and they insisted that they did not want anything in return as they would go to goodwill or the next person having a kid if I don't accept them. I haven't picked up yet, but am planning on bringing a small gift as a gesture of gratitude.
  • I'm gonna buy my friends little girl something as a thank you for all the bits
  • I'm a FTM and the thought of hand-me-downs is amazing. Baby is only going to be in these clothes for such a short period of time and any help is GREATLY apprecatied.
  • I would take hand me down clothes in a heartbeat. You can always give your friend a little something like a bottle of wine or gift card to say thank you but she is probably just as happy to get them out of her closet as you are to take them off her hands.
  • I LOVE hand me downs. I didn't get many baby clothes hand me downs since I was first to have a baby but a friend who has an older daughter has been giving me 3T and up and it's all stunning dress clothes and designer brands that I would never buy. And my DD Loves wearing "Rose's clothes!" I'm on my third girl so it will all get used like crazy, in addition to all my other stuff, though I still had plenty to give to others too.

As far as offering something, I never wanted anything. Especially since 98% of things are gifts and I just want to help out. I do like the little token gift idea, something for the child, wine, a food basket, or starbucks gift card. But I'm sure it's not necessary. If I don't have anyone to give to, I'd just donate because I hate the time of consignment selling, etc.

  • Our DS godparents found us a hand me down crib, high chair and pack n play from a Dr they work with....jackpot! Luckily it is all in great safe condition. Thinking of that made me think, if the friend is close enough with you, you should just consider it a gift. She's been in your shoes and knows it will be a big help :) you offered a repayment and she declined, so you can accept and enjoy guilt free!
  • I said no to all the offers with my 1st. Once I had her, I said yes. I didn't get clothes offers but loved having a 2nd bouncer, pnp, etc. those are essential with a multi-level house.
