C-section mamas - how's your recovery going?

STM here with RCS scheduled for Monday. Although this would be my 2nd c-section, it's been almost 4 years and the memory has faded. Just wondering how your recovery has been going so far?

How long since your c-section?
What's been the toughest part so far?
Do you have any older kids/toddlers and if so how hard has that made recovery?

Re: C-section mamas - how's your recovery going?

  • Recovery has been great. I had to stay an extra day in the hospital to receive a transfusion but I felt great after that. I haven't needed any pain meds since day 3.

How long since your c-section? 12 days

What's been the toughest part so far? It's been pretty smooth sailing since leaving the hospital. I'm afraid to try on regular jeans near my incision though so I'm still wearing maternity jeans even though they're getting baggy on me.

Do you have any older kids/toddlers and if so how hard has that made recovery? No older kids

Mine is going good too, my belly wrap is seriously what holds me together. Literally. If I don't wear it my stomach feels like its all wiggly and loose. But outside of that I'm just taking motrin to ease the little pain I do get. Just feels over stretched.

    How long since your c-section?

What's been the toughest part so far?
Just not being able to do chores like I use to. Now everything's taking a little longer which is annoying more than anything.

Do you have any older kids/toddlers and if so how hard has that made recovery?
Yes its hard cause I can't lift my kids :( theyre under 2 so they still get picked up every now and then. But I can't play like before but I think it hurts me more than them lol

    Edit because I can't read.
  • Just wondering how your recovery has been going so far? Better than the 1st time! The anesthesiologist gave me a shot
Of duramorph(sp?) with the spinal and i never ended up needing any pain meds other than Ibprofin. All the nurses wondered why they don't do that more often but I guess it's just "different" and so many people are opposed to different. I've been wear spanks for tummy support and I'm amazed at how much better it feels!

What's been the toughest part so far? Not picking up the 3 y/o

Do you have any older kids/toddlers and if so how hard has that made recovery? Yes 1 DD, she kind of gets it that mommy has a booboo belly and she has to be gentle so that's not too bad. But DH is sick with a horrible sinus infection since 2 days post op so I've been more or less fending for myself with the kids.

What's been the toughest part so far?
I'm a FTM so getting a schedule established at home n just trying to figure out what I'm doing lol. I'm on oxys, prescribed every 3hrs but I take it more like every 5-6hrs when I'm feeling pain.

Do you have any older kids/toddlers and if so how hard has that made recovery?
    No
  • Just wondering how your recovery has been going so far? Every day gets better, but incision still is uncomfortable. This is a RCS for me (last one was 7 years ago), and I am still taking pain meds at least once a day, depending in how much I'm moving around. I didn't take any pain meds with my first (even in the hospital).

How long since your c-section? 19 days

What's been the toughest part so far? With the combo of breastfeeding and sore nipples, I've cried some days because I have pain in my incision and nipples, and it was hard just getting out of bed to feed LO...especially in the hospital. But I am able to use my stomach muscles now at least to get up. Also, finding pants in my closet that don't sit right where my incision is.

Do you have any older kids/toddlers and if so how hard has that made recovery? Yes...my 7 year old. She's very active, so it's just been hard with her jumping around me...and there have been a couple of close calls where she almost hit my incision!

  • Really well. Day 2 was roughest with some gas pains but walking around and being up as much as possible really helps. My vag hurt a lot last time because of all the pressure from the twins and I don't have that this time. Today is Day 3 and I'm honestly feeling pretty good - though still on painkillers. I think they will let me go home tomorrow.

I know being home will be harder with not picking up my boys, but we tried to prepare them for mommy's ouchie. I can still snuggle on the couch!
After 2 losses, IVF #2 brought us our little boys.

What's been the toughest part so far? Leg/foot swelling, I feel like I've been beaten around the ankles with a baseball bat. Also needing to rest, Dr told me today that I need to take it much easier.

Do you have any older kids/toddlers and if so how hard has that made recovery?
    This is our first LO

Bright side: I've lost 20 of my 60 lbs gained so far! Belly bandit is helping a lot. A friend suggested taking weekly pics of my progress to help me feel better about my size. Also my hemorrhoids are pretty much gone since I never got to push.
  • How long? Its almost been 3 weeks

The hardest part? Was the gas pain the first few days after surgery and the TERRIBLE got and leg swelling that lasted 2 weeks

These were my first (twins) :-)

I am feeling really good now, but it was much harder than many ppl told me theirs was. The skin on my stomach below my belly button still feels like pins and needles when its touched, but my incision doesn't hurt at all. Im also only 10lbs away from prepreg weight. I'm just glad the hard part of recovery is over now!

  • It has been 2.5 weeks since my c-section.

This was my first pregnancy. The hardest part was the first 2 days in the hospital trying to get in and out of bed.... The nurses were not always very good about keeping up with the pain meds. I was off the narcotics by day 3 and only took the motrin a few days longer than that. Was stiff getting up and down for about a week and a half afterwards.

My skin below my belly button down to my incision is tingly (not so much pins and needles) and sensitive to the touch and my DH doesn't quite understand not to be touching it. Overall I feel great though and thanks to BFing I am only 15 lbs away from pre-pregnancy weight (I gained 45 pounds).
  • I'm really happy that overall you're all having smooth recoveries.

  • Day 12 for me. Still taking mefanamic acid for pain from time to time although not regularly. I also have a 4YO DD who os so nice to the baby but continues to be sooo needy so im kinda adjustng to how i could sivide attention etc.
Worst part for me is not being allowed to eat after surgery until I pass gas. Since it was an RCS I wasn't allowed to eat or drink at 12 midnight - surgery was at 930am. Also getting in and out of the bed while in the hospital was really painful top but like what PPs said you'll be glad you moved earlier became it'll speed up recovery.

i love you, my little mooncake mahal kita

    How long since your c-section?
    5 days

What's been the toughest part so far?
I guess the first few days, but nothing was too severe.  The pain was taken care of by meds and I really only had a lot of discomfort for the for about an hour the first day after the major meds started wearing off.  Now, 5 days later I have some discomfort but I expect that and actually am kind of happy that it reminds me to take it easy.  Having said that - so far today I have taken 2 Tylenol but I think that's pretty common.
Getting out of bed is my major issue, but our bed is high so this might not be an issue for some people.
Do you have any older kids/toddlers and if so how hard has that made recovery?
Yes, a 5 yr old and he has been great.  He's very helpful and because he's 5 and pretty big I haven't been able to lift him etc. for the last few months so now he knows not to jump on me etc.

  • I'm on day 11. This is my 3rd c/s and best recovery yet! I was done with pain pills after one week. Only stayed in the hospital for 2 nights. My 2nd c/s recovery was no good. I'm amazed at how well I've done this time. So thankful. :)
  • I am currently on day 15! This was my first baby and first c-section. My c-section was not scheduled but after two days of labor and only being dated to 5cm a c-section was necessary. I think the toughest part is being unable to do the normal things I want to do. However I really hated that I wasn't allowed to drive for two weeks. I didn't necessarily need to go any where but I don't like feeling stuck. As far as pain and recovery it's going amazing. I am not sore and only take a pain pill at night now. My incision is hardly noticiar and looks healed!

Good luck and enjoy your new baby!
  • Similar to @ellasmama18‌ this was my 3rd csection and its been by FAR the easiest recovery. We went home after 2 days in the hospital too. It's been exactly 2 weeks today. I've been off all pain meds (both Norco & Motrin) for about 3 days.
My incision hurt more today than any other day but I know I overdid it-laundry, lifting my 2 y/o up more than once, etc. I need to take it easy tomorrow. That's the toughest part, slowing down and letting my H do things. Or waiting for him to get things done that I asked him to do. Also, not being able to carry my 2 y/o up & down the stairs. He's a sweetheart and a Mommy's boy, and he gets it but forgets easily and says "carry me, pweeeeease Mommy!"

  • Great to hear that you're all doing well with your recovery. My RCS is tomorrow and I'll be sure to take your advice and get moving as soon as I can to speed up recovery.

Thanks to all that responded and good luck to all that are still waiting for their RCS.

  • Good luck tomorrow @billeb101.  The first time getting out of bed is not nice, but it gets much easier after that.  I'm sure you'll do great.

  • Mine was a planned c section and I had it 5 days ago. Recovery has been great. I was up and walking within 18 hours of surgery. Aside from discomfort sitting down, getting up or bending in the first 3 days the incision did not hurt. Right now I'm not on pain meds and almost back to normal. I'm a FTM.
  • Thank you @funinthenor ! I'll let you know how mine goes.

  • How long since your c-section?

3.5 years and this is my 4th one.

What's been the toughest part so far?

Hard to say but I think I am in more pain around my incision this time.  The other day I was also having some bad after pains and it was hard to get around.  I don't remember having those with the other three, but apparently they get worse with each subsequent pregnancy.

Do you have any older kids/toddlers and if so how hard has that made recovery?

Yes I have a 6 year old and a three year old.  THey have made the recovery harder just because they don't clean after themselves and the house is always messy.  Luckily, my husband has a few weeks off so he is helping with them.
