DCC PROS & CONS

How many are considering delayed cord clamping/cutting?

I am just starting to look into this, but would def like others take on the pro's and con's, and why you have decided to delay or not to delay!

No bashing from me, I'm just curious!

Re: DCC PROS & CONS

  • I am newly looking into it as well and so far I am going for not delaying as I have yet to find any significant benefits that outweigh the jaundice possibility... But I'm still researching :)
  • Loading the player...
  • Planning on it, want to make sure the kiddo isn't shorted any blood that would otherwise be able to finish pumping back into his/her little body
  • It is already standard practice at most US hospitals.
  • Absolutely going for it unless the baby needs to be taken away for resuscitation or something. Delaying until it stops pulsing gives the baby enough extra blood to make up 2 months of iron reserves and a 1/4 of their total hemoglobin. Yes, there is a tiny increased risk of jaundice but it's infrequent and if it did happen, it's usually a minor case that's easily treated with a couple days of light therapy. It's now standard practice at the hospital I work at/will deliver at. :-)
  • This is my 2nd and I have no idea what you are talking about. Now I feel like a bad mom. I read all the baby books the 1st time around and don't remember this.

  • We didn't with our first, and as long as this one is born at term and all is healthy, I don't plan to. Most babies need iron supplements before 6 months, but my daughter didn't. If she did, though, it's just a little drop of iron you can put in her bottle or direct into her mouth. My only reason for not wanting to this time around is that I heard if you do, there isn't enough cord blood to donate- and I think the potential good that could come out of that might be a bigger benefit than my baby not having jaundice or needing an iron supplement. I THINK. I haven't convinced my hubby of this yet. I mean, the blood in the cord is meant for my baby and would obviously benefit him, but I just really wanted to donate cord blood because I really believe in stem cell research and the good it can do. So for now, I'm leaning towards not doing delayed clamping provided all is well with baby and mom, and then donating that blood.
  • I'm torn, because I'm likely to have a preemie, and the extra blood from delaying clamping (if he doesn't need immediate resus) will help him. But at the same time, I want to bank the cord blood, and with a preemie, there isn't that much to bank in the first place. We're still talking about it.

  • I hadn't really heard about it with DD.  I was looking into it this time but found out if conditions are acceptable my midwife will do it as standard practice so I don't even need to think about it.
  • I didn't even know about it until you crazy Americans (love ya really!) started mentioning it... I'm going to ask my midwife as no british baby books I've read have said anything.
  • I had never heard of this either until now! This is my 6th child and have read, I thought, everything! The OB has never asked me about this either so I am assuming it's standard practice where I live? I will be asking now though!

  • I did a lot of research on this and from what I found, the science supports delayed clamping of the cord, at least for a few minutes after birth. We included it in our birth plan and talked to our OB GYN about it, and he agreed that he usually waits a few minutes before clamping to allow the blood to flow to the baby. But I highly recommend researching any procedure to feel comfortable with your decisions.
