Re: Weekly GD check-in 1/25

  • When were you diagnosed? Three weeks ago.
What worked for you this week? Not thinking I can get away with whatever I want at lunch and dinner (breakfast is my trouble meal).
What didn't work for you this week? Having carbs at lunch and dinner WITHIN REASON. Yes, I can eat Chipotle, but no I can't eat the entire thing.

GTKY: Does diabetes or GD run in your family or did your diagnosis come as a total shock? Diabetes and GD do not run in my family, however, I was already experiencing insulin resistence due to a drug I have to take, so I was being carefully monitored for GD from the beginning, so no surprise here.

Also, if you have a recipe that's really worked for you, please share! My morning shake consists of two scoops of yogurt, two spoonfuls of almond butter and unsweetened coconut milk. Add a slice of toast, and you're good to go.

Hi ladies! I was just diagnosed on Thursday, so I wanted to check in, even though I don't know what works for me yet. I probably won't get my meter for another week.

I don't think diabetes of any kind runs in my family, but I also wasn't completely surprised by the diagnosis. I'm overweight and I knew that was a risk factor. I was praying it wouldn't happen though, since being able to eat what I wanted (within reason) was a mood booster for me.

    Good luck this week, everyone.

  • Welcome, Julia! Sorry about your diagnosis, and don't worry about monitoring. You'll get the hang of that soon!
  • Diet is good but starting to hate breakfast only thing I find to eat is eggs in looking for something to grap in go for breakfast

I was diagnosed about 2 weeks now
No db run in my family so this was a total surprise

I struggle with breakfast, too. I've had an aversion to eggs this whole pregnancy, and since cereals, pancakes and waffles are out, my shakes are pretty much all I can eat. My H is a little frustrated with me, since we usually like to go to brunch on the weekends. Fingers crossed that I start liking eggs again after I give birth!
  • I was just diagnosed last week and won't see the endocrinologist until Thursday. I'm not sure what works yet... I googled examples of the diet and some approximate carb counts but I'm kind of just going blindly through this for now. I'm avoiding sweets of course and trying to eat balanced meals. A struggle for me has been trying to gauge exact carb counts for whole meals when things don't come in nicely wrapped single serve pouches.

Type 2 runs in my family but not GD that I know of.
  • GTKY: Does diabetes or GD run in your family or did your diagnosis come as a total shock?

A little shocking but i did expect i'd probably get it at some point in the pregnancy, diabetes and GD run in my family which is why i was tested at 13 weeks (that and my weight put the risk up)
  • I had my 2 hour test on Tuesday and got the call Wednesday that I have GD. I met with the nurse on Thursday and got my meter. So far I've honestly found it hard to come to terms with the diagnosis. Most my diet is carbs so I'm still trying to adjust. I meet with the dietician on the 29th.
I'm adopted so not sure if there is a family history of diabetes.
  • When were you diagnosed? Last week. I got the news on Monday and meet with the nutritionist on Wed.

What worked for you this week? I would say portion control. This is my first week of monitoring. I had very high numbers for my tests but typically don't eat a lot of carbs (I increased my carb intake because I was pg).Yesterday was a weird day because it was my nephew's birthday so I had pistachios, sparkling apple cider, spaghetti, marinara sauce, meatballs, salad, garlic bread, birthday cake and ice cream. I made sure I had small portions of everything except the pistachios, meatballs and salad. I was still within my goal when I tested.

What didn't work for you this week? I made some banana bread and figured 1/2 slice would be an appropriate serving, I ate way more than 1/2 slice.

GTKY: Does diabetes or GD run in your family or did your diagnosis come as a total shock? Total shock. No diabetes of any kind. I'm already 30 weeks so whatever my doctor decides, at least it won't be for too much longer.
  • Hi! I am lurking from M2015 but saw this and really wanted some advice! just curious what you think... I have a call into my Dr but it usually takes 24 to get a call back and when I saw this thread I had to post!

I was just diagnosed on Thursday of last week - and given a sample of what type of diet/exercise to follow until i meet with the nutritionist this week.  I had gained 15 lbs when diagnosed and on Friday I started following the plan... I bet my food intake over the weekend was 3/4 of what it usually is - and instead of snacking on granola bars etc i snacked on light string cheese and small servings of almonds.  I used to have ice-cream every night (not much but some) and over the weekend I substituted that for 1/2 c unsweetened greek yogurt and 1/4 cup berries. i have a desk job and hardly move during the day but over the weekend I walked for an hour + each day.

this morning i was afraid i had lost over the weekend and decided to weigh myself (which i don't usually do)  to be sure that if I lost that I didn't lose too much, and i actually GAINED 4 lbs since thursday... my food is 100% healthier and i was definitely more active and my portions were smaller).. it makes no sense to me. i was glad i hadn't lost but i wasnt thrilled to see a 4 lb gain.. since i have been gaining 1/2 - 1 lb per week up until now.

anyone else's body "adjust" to food modifications like this?

It could be that you and baby are going through a little growth spurt. Until you have another week to compare it to, it's hard to say. I wouldn't think 4 lbs. is an emergency, so just wait to hear back from your doctor and until you meet with the nutritionist.
  • When were you diagnosed?

What worked for you this week?
Being very careful about counting carbs and eliminating sweets, pasta and rice.

What didn't work for you this week?
I bought low carb bread but miscalculated how many carbs a peanut butter sandwich had.

GTKY: Does diabetes or GD run in your family or did your diagnosis come as a total shock?
    Nope. Pretty surprised.

Question for anyone with a little more experience:

I've been monitoring my blood glucose levels for about a week. My numbers have been pretty good, but I have had a few readings above the range the dietician gave me. I see my doctor on Thursday and will discuss this with her then, but I was just wondering if you all have to call your doctor any time you have a "high" reading?

No. You just show them your book every time you go in. Then they make adjustments to your diet or meds as necessary. One or two slip ups are bound to happen.
  • @BuckyC‌ --I am supposed to call if I'm over 200. Came close once and freaked out. Damn pop tart--I calculated risk.

@Ndm410‌--I suggest downloading the MyFitnessPal app. It'll give you the carbs on things like meats, cheeses, fruits, veg--anything. Plus--you can scan foods if you are planning to track. It's been a lifesaver for me.

    I am 29+4. Diagnosed at 27 (I think)

This week making sure I have a lower carb bfast and snacks (paired with protein) has really helped. I try to stick to 30 at bfast, 15 at snacks and then 45-55 at dinner. My reasons are good.

    Not working--that f'in pop tart!

GTKY--GF does not run in my family but diabetes does. I've always been great with my sugars when tested. I was shocked--and disappointed in myself.

  • Hi Ladies,

Long time lurker, first time poster, so let me start by introducing myself: I'm I'm an Aussie, 30 years old, FTM, 29w4d, having a boy affectionately nicknamed 'Skull Crusher'.

I was diagnosed with GD 2 weeks ago, but I wasn't surprised as my weight fluctuated quickly in the first 6 months of pregnancy in addition to a few other symptoms that triggered my suspicions.

In the first 2 weeks since diagnosis I have felt remarkably energetic and healthier than I have this whole pregnancy thanks to diet changes. I actually lost weight, which was mostly water retention. While I found that I could control my sugars really well during the day, my sugars wouldn't drop when fasting overnight. I've also had moderate keytone traces in my urine. Thanks to all this, I begun insulin treatment for the first time this evening (which was daunting). My insulin type is a 12hr slow release that I inject into my stomach at nighttime.

Regarding diet, I like to focus on my portion control and eating lots of green leafy veggies into every meal. I'm still working out how to include more 'good carbs'. So far I have found that legumes, eggs and meat/fish help to make me feel fuller for longer. My favourite dish is fresh salmon, sweet potato mash topped with a little homemade salsa. The salsa is really good to put on sandwiches too. I simply chop up of a melody of capsicums (I think you call them peppers), tomatoes, cucumbers, mint, and fresh lime.

Good luck ladies. I look forward to contributing and sharing experiences with you all.
  • I was just diagnosed last week and am currently at 30wks. My appt to discuss diet change/meter is on Thursday.

I had to take the 3 hour test with my first pregnancy too but passed that one. This time I almost fainted during the test. So I guess I want completely surprised I didn't pass this time.

Type 2 runs on both sides of my family too so that was probably a factor too. Otherwise I only failed by a few points and so far baby is measuring fine. Hoping the diet change will be enough to keep my numbers normal.

I picked up a GD cookbook so if i discover any tasty recipes that work for me, I will be sure to share. Sounds like breakfast is the hardest for most. Even though I haven't changed diet yet, I too find I feel the worst in the AM.
  • I'm typically a lurker, but when I got the results, I thought it was only fair to share my experiences with the other ladies sharing theirs.

When were you diagnosed? Last Thursday 1/22

What worked for you this week? I am eliminating almost all carbs (good and bad); my midwife gave me targets of 30g for Breakfast and pre-bedtime snack, 15g at snack times and 45-60g as lunch and dinner. I find when staying within these targets, but at the top of the ranges, my sugars are way above the testing results expectations. But when I'm eating much less than the carb ranges, I'm just within my testing targets. It's been extremely frustrating. Not only am I a perfectionist, but I'm also a reasonably healthy eater already. I stay away from starches, and most carbs. My first follow up meeting is next Monday, so I'll see what she says; but my energy levels are extremely low since making these changes. Not to mention being cranky :)

What didn't work for you this week? bedtime snack (as recommended by my midwife), this was a light bowl of cereal, also as recommended, and my fasting target was off by a lot. But I do find that if I take a brisk 30 min walk, my sugars level out and are within expected ranges. Might help you ladies if you eat something a little heavier. You just have to take the walk before you have to test, of course.

GTKY: Does diabetes or GD run in your family or did your diagnosis come as a total shock? I was pretty shocked because of how healthy I am in general. But I know it doesn't have anything to do with health pre-pregnancy.

@blergbot - I LOVE Chipotle. I did find it better to eliminate one (Rice or Beans) from my burrito bowl and that seems to help. It's a little boring but it still tastes good. By giving up the rice, I let myself have cheese which I usually don't. Hope this helps :)

Thanks for the tip! I usually find that just eating half my bowl is fine. I think I hadn't eaten much for lunch that day and wound up scarfing the whole thing. If I find myself in that position again, perhaps I will cut out the rice :)
  • @karboss‌ Thanks for that info. I'm interested in what my doctor will say. So far, I haven't come close to hitting 200 (knock on wood).
  • @karboss‌ thanks for the tip! I actually have my fitness pal and haven't used it in forever. I never even thought of using it to help track carbs! Duh! :-)
