Hey GD folks! Sorry for posting this so late, but my day got away with me!
When were you diagnosed?
What worked for you this week?
What didn't work for you this week?
GTKY: Does diabetes or GD run in your family or did your diagnosis come as a total shock?
Also, if you have a recepie that's really worked for you, please share!
Re: Weekly GD check-in 1/25
I don't think diabetes of any kind runs in my family, but I also wasn't completely surprised by the diagnosis. I'm overweight and I knew that was a risk factor. I was praying it wouldn't happen though, since being able to eat what I wanted (within reason) was a mood booster for me.
Good luck this week, everyone.
I was diagnosed about 2 weeks now
No db run in my family so this was a total surprise
Type 2 runs in my family but not GD that I know of.
A little shocking but i did expect i'd probably get it at some point in the pregnancy, diabetes and GD run in my family which is why i was tested at 13 weeks (that and my weight put the risk up)
I'm adopted so not sure if there is a family history of diabetes.
What worked for you this week? I would say portion control. This is my first week of monitoring. I had very high numbers for my tests but typically don't eat a lot of carbs (I increased my carb intake because I was pg).Yesterday was a weird day because it was my nephew's birthday so I had pistachios, sparkling apple cider, spaghetti, marinara sauce, meatballs, salad, garlic bread, birthday cake and ice cream. I made sure I had small portions of everything except the pistachios, meatballs and salad. I was still within my goal when I tested.
What didn't work for you this week? I made some banana bread and figured 1/2 slice would be an appropriate serving, I ate way more than 1/2 slice.
GTKY: Does diabetes or GD run in your family or did your diagnosis come as a total shock? Total shock. No diabetes of any kind. I'm already 30 weeks so whatever my doctor decides, at least it won't be for too much longer.
It could be that you and baby are going through a little growth spurt. Until you have another week to compare it to, it's hard to say. I wouldn't think 4 lbs. is an emergency, so just wait to hear back from your doctor and until you meet with the nutritionist.
What worked for you this week?
Being very careful about counting carbs and eliminating sweets, pasta and rice.
What didn't work for you this week?
I bought low carb bread but miscalculated how many carbs a peanut butter sandwich had.

Nope. Pretty surprised.
Question for anyone with a little more experience:
I've been monitoring my blood glucose levels for about a week. My numbers have been pretty good, but I have had a few readings above the range the dietician gave me. I see my doctor on Thursday and will discuss this with her then, but I was just wondering if you all have to call your doctor any time you have a "high" reading?
No. You just show them your book every time you go in. Then they make adjustments to your diet or meds as necessary. One or two slip ups are bound to happen.
@Ndm410--I suggest downloading the MyFitnessPal app. It'll give you the carbs on things like meats, cheeses, fruits, veg--anything. Plus--you can scan foods if you are planning to track. It's been a lifesaver for me.
I am 29+4. Diagnosed at 27 (I think)
This week making sure I have a lower carb bfast and snacks (paired with protein) has really helped. I try to stick to 30 at bfast, 15 at snacks and then 45-55 at dinner. My reasons are good.
Not working--that f'in pop tart!
GTKY--GF does not run in my family but diabetes does. I've always been great with my sugars when tested. I was shocked--and disappointed in myself.
Long time lurker, first time poster, so let me start by introducing myself: I'm I'm an Aussie, 30 years old, FTM, 29w4d, having a boy affectionately nicknamed 'Skull Crusher'.
I was diagnosed with GD 2 weeks ago, but I wasn't surprised as my weight fluctuated quickly in the first 6 months of pregnancy in addition to a few other symptoms that triggered my suspicions.
In the first 2 weeks since diagnosis I have felt remarkably energetic and healthier than I have this whole pregnancy thanks to diet changes. I actually lost weight, which was mostly water retention. While I found that I could control my sugars really well during the day, my sugars wouldn't drop when fasting overnight. I've also had moderate keytone traces in my urine. Thanks to all this, I begun insulin treatment for the first time this evening (which was daunting). My insulin type is a 12hr slow release that I inject into my stomach at nighttime.
Regarding diet, I like to focus on my portion control and eating lots of green leafy veggies into every meal. I'm still working out how to include more 'good carbs'. So far I have found that legumes, eggs and meat/fish help to make me feel fuller for longer. My favourite dish is fresh salmon, sweet potato mash topped with a little homemade salsa. The salsa is really good to put on sandwiches too. I simply chop up of a melody of capsicums (I think you call them peppers), tomatoes, cucumbers, mint, and fresh lime.
Good luck ladies. I look forward to contributing and sharing experiences with you all.
I had to take the 3 hour test with my first pregnancy too but passed that one. This time I almost fainted during the test. So I guess I want completely surprised I didn't pass this time.
Type 2 runs on both sides of my family too so that was probably a factor too. Otherwise I only failed by a few points and so far baby is measuring fine. Hoping the diet change will be enough to keep my numbers normal.
I picked up a GD cookbook so if i discover any tasty recipes that work for me, I will be sure to share. Sounds like breakfast is the hardest for most. Even though I haven't changed diet yet, I too find I feel the worst in the AM.
@blergbot - I LOVE Chipotle. I did find it better to eliminate one (Rice or Beans) from my burrito bowl and that seems to help. It's a little boring but it still tastes good. By giving up the rice, I let myself have cheese which I usually don't. Hope this helpsThanks for the tip! I usually find that just eating half my bowl is fine. I think I hadn't eaten much for lunch that day and wound up scarfing the whole thing. If I find myself in that position again, perhaps I will cut out the rice
