Ameda vs Medela

My insurance company covers both Ameda Purely Yours & Medela Pump in Style. I'm completely torn between the two & have no idea which one to go with. I've been reading reviews and have discovered that in terms of hygiene, the Ameda pump works the best since there's no way you can end up with milk back up in the tubes. However, when it comes to suction, Medela works best. This is my first baby so I want to do what's best...HELP!

    The Ameda works just as well suction wise as the Medela, I used one in the hospital and one at home when my some was in the NICU. My insurance covers both, but the Ameda I can pick up at Target and it comes with the bag, bottles, etc. and the Medela only comes with the motor and hygiene kit.
    You need to see if your insurance covers the WHOLE Medela kit or just the basics.

    I have had two medela pumps and haven't had any issue with milk back up, you just have to watch, if the bottles/bags are getting full then switch them out.    My go to pump this time will again be Medela. 

    Agreed on PP regarding coverage, some insurances only cover the basics and not the entire kit.  Do your research and make the best decision for your situation.  Good luck!

    I click the wrong April, I'm from A14, but I just wanted to say I'm 100% for Medela. I got Ameda Purely Yours from the insurance and it started having major suction problems within the first 3 months (customer service was very nice but ultimately couldn't help). There were a couple other moms on our board who also had problems with the suction.

    I exclusively pump so I used my pump a lot. Luckily my SIL still had her Medela pump in style. I bought new parts and have been using it ever since. This pump has survived 3 babies and is still going strong.

    There's my two cents. Congratulations on your upcoming baby. Becoming a parent is the craziest ride you'll ever be on but the best at the same time

    I exclusively pumped and used an Ameda. It was wonderful and very efficient. I loved not having to worry about milk in the tubes with all the pumping I was doing. About 8 months in a I did have a motor issue and Ameda overnighted me a brand new pump.

    I EP'd for 7 months with my first and used a Medela pump.  It was the Freestyle, not the PIS, so I can't speak to that.  I used the exact same pump with my second child, but I only pumped once in the am and the 3 days/week I worked.  It lasted through both kids with no problems.  This time I will get a new pump if insurance covers it and have no doubts about going with Medela again. I think my old pump would last through this child too, but I only plan on pumping once daily.

    I had an Ameda and after a few months it lost a lot if suction. I called my insurance to let them know and they actually said they had heard the same from multiple people, and were no longer covering Ameda products. I got a Medela PISA and used it with no problem for just over a year.

    I used both and got double the amount of milk in the same time with the Ameda.

    I don't like medela because it's an open system. With my last two kids I used an ameda, and I thought it was okay. The suction is bad when the little diaphragm things need to be replaced, and I found myself always having to pop the top off mid pump and then put it back on to fix the suction. This time I switched to a spectra S2. It's a relatively new pump, but the reviews of it across the board rate it as the best one around.
