April 2014 Moms

Thoughts re: Disney and measles

I would guess that most of you have probably heard about the measles outbreak that originated at Disneyland by now. They are now cautioning anyone who is unvaccinated to stay out of the park.

So we are planning a trip to Disney World in April over my DS's spring break. It is a few weeks before DD turns one and she will not have had the MMR by then. We have been planning this for a while and my DS is very excited about it. When we planned this it had not occurred to me to be worried about things like measles because there has not been an outbreak for years due to most of the population being vaccinated.

I know the outbreak is in CA, not FL, but in the comments in one of the articles I was reading a ton of people basically said it is stupid and reckless to bring a baby to one of these places before they have been vaccinated.

So WDYT? Should we be rethinking the timing of this trip and wait until after DD is vaccinated to go to Disney? I guess there is a higher population of unvaccinated people on the west coast v. East coast so there may be less risk here, but people travel from all over for these parks so that doesn't really mean anything.

I am just second guessing this trip now and wondering if other moms would be too.

  • Can you get her vaccinated a little early? That might solve the whole issue.

I have taken this little one on a Disney cruise, which would be a disaster if there was an outbreak of anything. We also took him to Great Wolf Lodge when he was about 6 weeks old. I think it's different after the first child. But I know other ppl probably think I'm crazy - when I had one baby I would have thought I was crazy. I'm just saying I think everyone is different when it comes to possible exposure of their kids to illness.

  • I don't think it's any different than going on a plane, or even the grocery store.
  • It's tough. To be honest, we took Evan to Disneyland when he was 3 months old (BIL works for Disney so we got free tickets) and that never crossed my mind to worry about that. I would probably still do it, since it's Florida, not CA, which I do think makes it a bit less risky. I'd probably keep your little one in some kind of baby carrier, though, and be careful about touching things or getting to close to people.

  • She has her 9-month appt Mon and I will see what her Ped thinks. We probably will go anyway but it really annoys me that this is even an issue.

Like I said, it never would have occurred to me to worry about this before and I fully intend to get all of her vaccines when she is due for them. Hopefully all the people who thought Jenny McCarthy was a genius and jumped on the anti-vax bandwagon are seeing now that this is what happens. You end up with resurgence of an illness that had been pretty much eliminated in this country.

  • And I think we would have been better off had we gone when she was 3 months. She will be into everything by April and it will be much harder to keep her contained.

  • Savannah has already been to Disney World about 10 times. However we live 30 mins away so it's no big deal to go. I would ask if you can get her vac early, bring your own stroller, wash hands a lot.
  • Ds is going to Disneyland with us in February. At the end of the day we go places all the time where he can get sick. We will take what precautions we can. But we can't not do things because of big what ifs
  • I wouldn't go unless your ped will vaccinate early. Why risk it?
