MMR Reaction? Your opinions please.

So about 11 days ago, DD had her 15 month shots. All was well other than her poor legs being sore. She got MMR, Prevnar, and 2nd Flu booster. Then 9 days later (weds) she is send home from daycare with 104 fever. Pedi, whom I love, says her fever is from MMR and watch her for a couple days. So today is day 3 of fever 101 min to around 103. Tylenol/ibuprofen helps for about 4-5 hrs but fever comes right back. No other symptoms other than she does not feel good. She isn't eating her norm but eating a little and drinking enough to keep wet diapers. I was thinking of she is still running fever tomorrow, I'm taking her in. What do you guys think?? Any experience with this?

Dd got those shots today. The dr warned us that she can have a reaction (fever) up to two weeks from today. I didn't ask how high the fever would be, but 104 seems high to me. I would call again if it gets really high again tomorrow. 101 wouldn't worry me but a high fever on day 3 would make me uneasy.

  • That's what I thought that 104 was pretty high to be from shots. I asked a few docs at the hospital I work at and they even thought that was high to be from the MMR. All last night it was 103 and this morning then this eve it was 102. So I'm going to see how the night goes and maybe take her in tomorrow.
  • My bff's baby just got her mmr yesterday and they told her specifically to watch for a "high fever" over the next 8-10 days.

Medically speaking, you treat a fever of 104 the same as 101. It no more harmful. Alternate Tylenol and Motrin every 4 hours. Hope it passes soon!

  • We just got shots a week ago and no fever and the dr never even mentioned it. She is pretty good about giving us most common side effects. I would say for a day or 2 maybe but after that I would call or take LO in.
  • High fever is very common with MMR. Just keep alternating Motrin and Tylenol. Try to remember that the fever actually lets you know that she is one of the lucky ones who did respond to the MMR vaccine and you have tangible proof that she is gearing up immunity against any future exposures through this fever process. You can always call a nurse line if you are worried--but generally several days of high fever is pretty typical, from what I have heard.

Kids spike higher fevers than adults. 104 would be a dangerous fever for an adult, but kids do that just with an ear infection. Just try to keep up on the medicine and if she gets really hot, do a lukewarm bath, and dress lightly.

Sorry you are dealing with this--but remember what you are seeing is actually a good thing that she is going to have antibodies for the rest of her life through these yucky few days...
  • Thank you all! She finally woke up this morning with no fever so she's deft feeling better Except now she has major watery diarrhea. I bet I've changed her diaper/outfit 5 times today, which makes me think maybe it was a virus. I'd rather deal with that than the fever and her not feeling well.
  • Thanks for this post. We are 11 days out and LO woke up with 102 degree fever today! Will monitor and cuddle. Appreciate the info.

  • Poor thing. I hope she feels better. Macis fever ran for right at 3 whole days then say she was just fine all weekend. At least now I will remember this for the next MMR! My son never had any reaction so I was not prepared and prob didn't hear the nurse tell me anything after she got them because I was too busy comforting my screaming baby. :(
