Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Miscarriage Pain vs Labor Pain

Hi ladies. I just recently miscarried on Tuesday at about 12 weeks. I found out at 9 weeks at my first ultrasound where they couldn't find a heartbeat so I knew it was going to happen but I did not know it would happen the way that it did. I was in the bathroom for four hours going through waves of intense pain that only got worse towards the end. I was throwing up and the pain medicine I had did not seem to be working. I am better now, just sore around my hips and back. Emotionally I am crushed but I have an amazing man and step son and family who are helping me through it. But since that was my first pregnancy I was wondering if any of you could tell me how close that pain would be to the pain of labor if you have experienced both.

Re: Miscarriage Pain vs Labor Pain

  • I am so sorry for your loss. I have not had a successful pg, but I do know the intense pain you have been dealing with during this natural mc. I just wanted to offer that a heating pad may help.

  • I also have not had a successful pregnancy but the pain during my 10 week MC was very, very, bad. I just can't compare it to labor pain.

LIke flyoffeve said, a heating pad worked wonders for me. I am sorry you are going through all of this *hug*
I am not sure how to say this without getting a "solicitation" warning so I guess I just say that I am not longer active on THIS site.

  • Thanks @flyoffeve‌. I've been taking Tylenol but it doesn't really seem to help at all. I have a heating pad here, I'm going to look for it. Thanks again.
  • I haven't had a child, but my natural miscarriage was less painful than my periods.
    Everyone different.
  • I've never had a successful pregnancy, but the pains and cramping I felt are what I assume to be contractions. Motrin and a heating pad were my best friends for about a week. So sorry for your loss.

  • I have had 2 children, who are 17 and 14.  I have alos had 2 recent MC, 1 at 5 weeks and 1 at 10 weeks 6 days.     I will say that the first was just like a period, not that painful.  the 2nd was just like the begining of labor.   not as painful as full blown labor but pretty close..  I think the only difference is that you ahve a bigger baby to push out which causes more pressure and pain.

  • My doctor told me the excrutiating pain I had during my MC was my cervix dilating. So my guess is that is what the begining stages of labor feel like.
  • Im still waiting to miscarry but gave birth 3 times no epidural labor is very painful but so worth it when you see your baby. having a mc has to be the hardest because you go through pain without receiving your child.  my son birth went well because i was laboring in a bathtub it helped with the contractions but when it comes time to push thats when it gets you a big baby is a lot different than a baby in the first trimester so the pain is going be more when you experience labor.
  • This was a good question. I've been wondering it myself. My sister (a doctor who has never had a miscarriage) said it would be no different than a period. I have my doubts about that after reading about other people's stories. I'm 9 1/2 weeks but the baby stopped at 6. My doctor said I can take Motrin for the pain, but if it gets bad, I may take the Oxycodone I have leftover from when I had back surgery. I just hope it happens during the day. I'd hate to be up all night with it. And things seem scarier at night.

  • I would say the pain is comparable to labor pains. I have two children and did both of those labors with no intervention. But definitely early labor.
