breast pumps?!

Hey there ladies! This will be my first kiddo, and I am planning on breast feeding. I am starting to build my registry. I would like to know everyones thoughts on which breast pump to go with?? And which ones to stay away from! .

Thanks in advance :)

Re: breast pumps?!

  • My insurance covers a breast pump that the hospital will provide. I would find out if your insurance does the same then you can find out what type of breast pump the hospital provides read the reviews and find accessories/attachments

  • I heard about this. I dont know if my insurance will cover. How did you go about it? Did you ask your insurance company or the hospital . Where should I start first? I would definitely like to go through my insurance if it is covered because nan those things are not cheap!!
  • @miap23‌ I saw an add about it and was skeptical so I checked with my insurance company

Ok great ty!! I will check it out!
  • I called my insurance company directly too, it was really easy. They directed me to a medical supply company to contact. I hope yours covers the BP as well.
  • I looked up my bc/bs coverage online and found a number through CVS to call and order my free electric double pump Ameda. It came in a week and super easy.
  • Man you guys rock! Nobody ever tells you this stuff! Im the youngest out of 5 and I am the first in my family to breast feed. So they aren't much help lol
  • I pumped 4-5 times/day with medela double electric for over 2 years. Ordered another one for free with my insurance this time around.
  • Yeah, I couldn't believe it when a friends said that insurance can cover a breast pump...  but mine does! Up to $300! So I'm totally getting a double electric. Probably Medela or Evenflo.

Medela is one that everyone's heard of... and they price it accordingly. The lady at my local BabiesRUs said that they're all good...  one double electric is comparable to another. You're just paying for the brand. So don't feel pressured!

  • All health insurance is required to cover a breast pump as of 2014... ObamaCare ;)
  • My health insurance has covered most of a 350$ medela pump for me. For this I am VERY thankful! So that's what I will be using I've already picked it up and checked it out. Seems like a pretty good reliable product from reviews I've read :)
  • Seriously life savors!!.
  • Medela is the brand I prefer. I used one with DD and it was great. I didn't use an electric pump with the last two because I didn't pump much. I was already a SAHM and almost always put them to the breast. My sister is pregnant as well and getting the Medela.

  • My insurance even covers a rental. I left a Medela symphony at work and had my medela PISA at home. Frequently the insurance companies will say you can only go with the mail order supplier, but I kept calling back and determined I could get the rental from my local hospital. If you don't get the answer you want from insurance, call again. I needed a note/prescription from my doc and had to wait for baby to be born.

My two boys are getting a surprise May 2015!

Do u kmow how much it is to rent from your insurance? Just trying to figure out all possibilities. .
  • It was covered 100%. I rented until DS2 was 15 mo. The medela symphony is quicker and quieter than the medala PISA. The PISA is my second favorite pump though. I also have a ameda purely yours, but I can't get a good let down with that one.

I've done the same thing! I love my Medela double electric pump, it is wonderful!
  • If you are planning on using it often invest in a good one.  I have the Medela pump in style.  Used it for a year with my first and going to be using it with this one as well.  I was pumping at least 6 times a day for the first few months and then down to 4 times a day later on.  They may look like a lot, but they are totally worth the money!

Most health insurances are required to cover breast pumps some still don't. There is a grandfather clause and some have minimal to no coverage. Mine only contributes $50 toward a pump. A friend in tricare said hers doesn't cover one at all unless it is a hospital pump rental for a medical reason. So while there is some coverage on breast pumps it will vary based on the insurance. Not everyone will be lucky enough to get a brand new $300 medela pump paid for by their insurance.

  • Echo PP on the insurance situation. My sister is having to buy hers or maybe go through her local health department because her insurance does not cover it.

  • @sml72978 The first few times I called my insurance company, they said that they were grandfathered in as well. It took a few calls to get someone that knew what they were talking about. I'm sure you already exhausted that avenue, but thought I would mention it anyways. I had heard that some of the government plans (tricare) were exempt. That makes no sense.

Yep, been down that road.  At first they said "Yes we cover breast pumps" I was ecstatic.  Then they told me what their coverage was.  My particular insurance will reimburse up to $50 only if I can provide a form deeming it medically necessary.  So basically I would have to jump through hoops just to get reimbursed $50, and I would have to buy it through one of their approved companies.  I looked into pricing and found that I could buy one on my own for less than what it would cost with the $50 reimbursement from insurance.  I was bummed about it in the beginning but I have it all figured out and have a pump on the way now, my Best friend is giving me her almost new Medela pump that she used only a few times because she broke a part off accidentally and never got it fixed.  Some new tubing, a replacement part and sterilizing will do the trick.
