Doctor wouldn't do a sweep?

I'm 40 weeks, 2 cm dilated and 70% effaced and was told that wasn't dilated enough for a sweep? Hubby leaves for a work conference in a week and I'm very anxious and irritated...especially after painful false/early labor for the past few weeks. Just tired and hoping I'll go into labor soon

  • I was 2 cm last week. 3 cm yesterday. 60%. I have had 2 sweeps. ... I'm still pregnant.
I've had contractions for 6 days now. ..it's unpleasant.
Sweeping clearly doesn't work for all, just makes you more uncomfortable in some cases.

  • I had one this morning and am now having pretty regular contractions. But not strong. We'll see how tonight goes. I was 2cm dilated don't know any other details.
  • I'm sorry Kiramei1. Some doctors are less understanding than others and some are more rigid. I had my membranes sweeped twice at 39 and 40 weeks. I had my baby 2 days after the second sweep. I didn't think it was painful, but I have a high pain tolerance.

  • I was swept today-- Dr said I was 1 cm dilated and 75% effaced (due Friday) so I figured why not. She was able to sweep all the way around and baby's head was right there. It wasn't painful for me, but I was in a hypnotic state so I was totally relaxed so all I felt was pressure that was somewhat uncomfortable but not bad at all. I'd do it again. I have since been experiencing contractions (mostly just a continuous tightening of the entire uterus and a dull period like cramp) and very very light bleeding. We'll see if it helps at all, at least help dilate more and efface more so if I do need to be induced in 2+ weeks I'll be more ready therefore receptive. LO is still head butting my cervix, doing her thing :)

  • Thank you all for the replies. I know it doesn't always bring on labor but I've just come to the end of my rope. 5 bouts of false labor, the most recent with hours of contractions 1 minute apart felt like I was being ripped apart and the hospital only gave me a shot of morphine and sent me home :(
  • Mt doctor just did a sweep yesterday, and i just turned 40 weeks yesterday. I am only 2 mm diallated, not even cm, and i am fully effaced. . If you tell them to do it they have to, if not, just go to the hospital, and tell them you want your membranes sweeped.

How did they sweep you then? I thought you had to be a minimum of 2 cm to get a sweep done?
And I've never heard of going to the hospital to ask for a sweep.

  • I am 40 weeks + 3 days at 1 cm and 70% effaced.  My doctor did a sweep today; it feels like it may be working!  Fingers crossed.
