Cord Blood Banking

What are your thoughts on this? Just had my 28 week checkup and cord blood banking was in the packet of information that I received. It didn't tell me much, other than giving me contact information for an outside source. Pros? Cons? Does it cost anything?

If I were to do anything it would be to donate it. There are only a few things that the cord blood could help your child with down the road and it's rather expensive. They can do a lot of research with the cord blood. So I would probably go that route to try and help with research in cord blood.

We are going to bank our cord blood. It does cost money. If I had the pamphlet near me right now I would give you some info but I'm too lazy to get up and get it. If we were not going to bank ours, we definitely would donate it to research.

I wanted to donate mine. I found that depending on the medical conditions that cord blood can help, many need a match and not their own blood back. It really depends on what they are trying to treat. Unfortunately because I have Factor V Leiden I'm not able to bank or donate cord blood.

@ejz98ric02‌ it is very costly; I recall the initial fee being close to $2500, plus an annual storage fee. I'm still looking into it but will likely decline because of the cost.

Wow, that is expensive. Someone mentioned it while we we touring the hospital but I haven't had the chance to look into it.

Wow really? I didn't know if you have Factor V you can't bank cord blood? Ugh, I'm super disappointed.

We are banking with this baby. We didn't with the first because we really couldn't afford to. We can now, though. I'd rather have it and never need it, than need it and not have it. There are new developments every day. I'm a childhood cancer survivor and I know that skews my feelings about it.

In case any other Factor V Leiden moms stumble upon this, I contacted CBR and spoke to a geneticist and they said I would be able to bank the cord blood even with Factor V Leiden. However, I did not ask about donating. Just a FYI

My dad has stage four lymphoma. Any blood we donate will be too late to help him, but it might help others. We will donate ours!

I'd love to do it...I'd rather e safe than sorry, but we are a 1 income family and it's looks like almost 2K plus $100 storage fee annually. It's hard to chose money over potential health benefits, but that's where we are right now, sadly. I respect everyone's decision to bank or not to bank. I didn't think it was as controversial as it is.

Not banking because we never have any left. We don't cut the cord until it's empty (completely soft and white).

Doing delayed cord clamping as well.
Even after the cord is white, the midwife or doctor should be able to collect blood from the vessels closest to the placenta (if they know what they are doing). We plan on donating anything collected.

We also plan to clamp beyond "immediate" until cord is white. Will attempt to bank the remaining stem cells. My Current OB wants to immediately clamp to make sure there's enough stem cell but can't clearly define her reasoning for this. We plan to risk it.

My husband and I decided to. I'm stuck in the hospital so I've had some time to research it. We decided to go with the company Cryo-cell, but only made that decision based on the recommendation from my midwife. I was able to get a 25% discount for being a nurse. I recall seeing several other nurses on the board so some may be able to ask what discounts might be available! My husband doesn't feel that it is as necessary as I do. Hopefully we will never need to use it but I will have some peace of mind doing so, especially since she will be quite premature.

We can't afford it and when I had DS I wasn't allowed to donate it. Not sure if it was because he was a preemie or if the hospital just wasn't set up to receive and send out the donation. I'm thinking it had more to do with the hospital itself because I can't see cord blood being different between gestations. Although I do know they had to do testing on my placenta because he was a spontaneous preemie and they had to dispose of it as medical waste afterwords.

My doctor said he didn't do it with his three kids so that helps me to decide not to do it also. ,

Thank you. It could just be my state also. Each CBR seems to have it's own set of rules. I'm also homozygous so that could be the difference also. My sister also has Factor V leiden (hetero) and wasn't able to bank, but she lives in FL. I'm glad you found different information!

Great article outlining ratios from the American Pediatrics. They state that only 1 out of 200,000 cord blood samples stored would ever be used.

We will not be banking for mainly two reasons:

Genetic conditions that arise aren't a reason to use cord blood as the cord blood also has the same genetic makeup/condition.

As an adult you'd need more stem cells than could be extracted from the cord blood banked for you at birth.

I think it's a scam, personally. And I think my baby would benefit from it, as it is theirs, I will give it to them.
