Gestation diabetes- ideas for breakfast

I know there is a weekly GD post but that's more of a check-in. I found out on Friday that I have GD and won't be meeting with my dietitian until the 27th. I have talked to a nurse to get a general idea of what to eat and what to avoid but I'm struggling with breakfast. I've read conflicting things about dairy in the morning and was wondering if anyone who has spoken with a dietician can help me out. I used to eat plain Greek yogurt with one packet of honey but apparently (from what I've read) dairy in the morning is not good. I don't really know why because it's low in carbs and sugar and high in protein. What are you ladies with GD eating for breakfast? I don't really love eggs or have time to make them daily. I had a whole grain English Muffin with peanut butter but I don't want that every day for the next 11 weeks.

I don't have GD but I strive to eat a diet similar to one who has diabetes because of family history with the disease.

If you don't like eggs then have you considered green smoothies? You can include a veggie, protein (like peanut butter), fruit and diary or non dairy (like almond milk). If you also have a piece of multi-grain toast I think that satisfies everything you need.

    Good luck!

  • make hard boiled eggs or make a batch of egg muffins and reheat in the morning (scrambled eggs with meat/cheese/veg baked in a muffin tin).

I am on a bariatric diet (and my DH is a diabetic) - which is basically a GD diet as well.  My Nutrition plan includes lots of high protein dairy.  greek yogurt, cottage cheese, milk (check out fairlife brand...double protein low carb, still real milk), protein drinks (though you may not want a ton of artificial sweetners while pregnant).

Other high protein foods are meat...eat meat for breakfast.  peanut butter in moderation is good, nuts, beans, cheese, soy/tofu.

check out this site...it is a person who had weight loss surgery...but the basics of a post-WLS diet are high protein, low carb, high nutritional value foods.

  • What about avocado spread on toast? You can sprinkle with red pepper flakes if you're into that.  I also second oatmeal and eggs made ahead of time in a muffin tin.
  • Mine was always a egg white omelet with lots of flavorful veggies, that way you don't really taste the eggs, but get the health benefits. They even have pre deprecated egg whites in a carton. Have the veggies all precut and throw them in a skillet. Once they are cooked, pour in the egg whites and just a few minutes later, delish!

Hope this helps! GD is really hard and scary. I hope you and your nutritionist can work together to come up with some do-able options for you!

    Good luck!
  • String cheese, thin wheat bagel bread with apple butter, an egg, granola bar...

  • Thank you all so, so much!! Such awesome suggestions. I'm going to google some eggs in a muffin tin recipes because that sounds good. I did see one recipe that included potatoes so that can be my carbs if I don't want toast.
  • Google Weight Watchers Mini Zucchini Quiche. They're delicious! You shouldn't need a WW subscription to see the recipe. They're great because they freeze and you can just thaw them overnight.
  • I make sausage and egg breakfast tacos with carb balance tortillas and salsa. I pre cool the sausage, heat up in the pan, and then cook the eggs in it to save time. It's delicious!

Meant to say PRECOOK the sausage. :)
  • Recommend not eating even if dr didn't say y fast. I stopped eating before 10 night before for 915 appt (1015 blood) and passed easily. Didn't modify anything else to diet previous day
  • Milk products easily turn to sugar in your system and in the morning you have a larger than normal influx of pregnancy hormones which make your insulin resistance go up even further. So that's why it might not be a good idea for breakfast. Honey isn't a good idea at all as stated by a pp. Some women end up not being able to tolerate carbs at all for the first meal. Your prescribed number for breakfast will probably end up being as low as a snack while lunch and dinner will allow more carbs. I love egg muffins and I have also done a small tortilla with eggs. If you do oatmeal it needs to be the longer cooking kind, not instant or quick oats. It might not work for breakfast though.
