1st Trimester

Marathon training and pregnancy?

Hi everyone! I just found out I was pregnant and was confirmed by my dr. I'm about five weeks along and don't have my initial ultrasound for a few more weeks.  Before I knew I was pregnant, I had been training to run the LA marathon (for my 4th year in a row). Running is nothing knew to me and so far this year I'm up to about 15 miles. The marathon is on March 15, which will be right around the time my 1st trimester ends. Are any of you distance runners? Do you know if/how safe it is to continue running? Everything I've read says its ok since I was running before, just to check with the Dr.  Please let me know your thoughts and/or your own experiences running during pregnancy... this is so exciting but terrifying at the same time!

Re: Marathon training and pregnancy?

  • Running would be completely safe during pregnancy unless your doctor has cause for concern. I on the other hand, struggled to get out bed in my first trimester due to horrible morning sickness. The last thing I could think about was running for any distance. Good luck!!

  • You are able to do almost anything that you did regularly before pregnancy. It's great exercise! Now if you had not run regularly I wouldn't pick up running miles in the snap of a finger.
Good Luck for your marathon and pregnancy!
  • Just ran a marathon at ten weeks. You can do it!

  • Thanks for the advice everyone! You're so encouraging and comforting :) I have my first ultrasound in two weeks, hoping the dr. says everything looks good to keep running!
  • Just be careful of baby bouncing on your bladder... by then you may be making way more pit stops to pee... but good luck!!
  • Ha I was talking to a co-worker today who ran at marathon at 14 weeks and she gave me the same warning... she was fine but she had to stop to pee about 15 times! Thanks for the heads up :)
  • One of my friend's wife ran two marathons during her last pregnancy, one at 6 weeks and the other at 24 weeks. She's a bit of a nut, but she said it was fine except for the peeing thing. She did have to slow down for the second one, and forget about trying to beat her record. :)

  • My doctor told me not to get my heart rate above 140.  I had already ran a marathon and wanted to do a half around 6 weeks, but I know my heart rate goes to at least 160-170, so I opted out. I would just make sure to check with your doctor.  Best of luck!
  • I'm also a distance runner and my OB said there is nothing that I can do to harm my pregnancy with running. When my body says it's time to stop I will know.
If you've been runnning and training already, I would say that you are fine. Just listen to your body and when you get tired or you need to walk. Walk! There is no shame in walking in a half or full marathon. Completion is the goal!
Best of luck! And remember my favorite running motto durning your race, "Trample the weak! Hurdle the dead!" haha! =D
