diapers

Has anyone started stockpiling diapers? I am a FTM and just saw an article on things you should be buying early on to save money. They suggest diapers and formula. I am wondering how to pick the right diaper and formula. I am not planning on buying the formula because I have read a lot about kids having allergies and other issues with it. So I am really only interested in the diaper thing, how do you know which diaper works best for you? Does the brand really make a difference?

It's been 8 years since I had a baby, but I preferred with my three kids to use Pampers. Tried some off brand ones, but never liked them much. My city has a garage sale type site that I see a lot of people sell diapers on so even if you stock piled them and didn't end up using them, you may be able to find a place to sell them. You might lose a little bit of money, but that way you can stock pile without worrying about it.

If you go with a name brand, I'd definitely use coupons. Get your Sunday paper for their coupons and also www.coupons.com has diaper ones all the time. Also wipes. I don't mind off brand wipes, but often times with a sale and a coupon, you can get the name brand ones just as cheap.

    Good luck!

  • I wouldn't stock pile a ton because you may end up not liking that particular kind. I wait to see how they fit baby etc before buying a ton

You won't know which diapers to choose until baby gets here. Some moms swear by Huggies, some by Pampers and some by store brands. I think it really all depends on the baby. I personally, am a strictly Pampers (swaddlers and cruisers) mom including their sensitive wipes. I won't use any other kind. We had a diaper party and received basically every brand under the sun so we've tried it all and for us nothing compared. My son has sensitive skin and had a seriously awful reaction to Huggies. (I'm talking like what looked to be burns on his poor little hiney bad). Huggies and pampers seem to hold up the best at least for us (I.e. Less leak and blowouts, good for overnights as well) except of course we couldn't continue to use Huggies after such a bad reaction. I suggest stocking up on different brands and trying them out. You can always return or exchange them if you find a brand you love and don't want to continue to use the other brand you've stocked up on.
  • Yes I agree with pp stock piling diapers or formula is not a good idea. You won't know until your baby is born what is preferred, if there are allergies or anything. My first kid changed sizes very quickly in the first year. Just like pp said you will have to figure out what's best for your kids build. I started out with pampers and I really like those but as they get bigger they use more diapers which is more money. I now use Up&up brand at target which is a lot cheaper than the name brand.
  • I've been buying/stock piling gift cards just to help stretch the diaper budget later! Probably get a few boxes closer to July, but am worried about getting too many of the wrong brand! I've heard a great things about Pampers and Luvs.
  • Thank you ladies for the good info. The gift card thing is a good idea. What other items would you suggest buying early?
  • Not a fabulous idea. This will be my 5th baby and I made that mistake with baby #1. All of my kids were sensitive to certain brands and broke out. dd#1 could only use pampers ds#1 was Huggies with pampers sensitive wipes get my drift? Also, all of them were on different formulas. Baby might have a food allergy and be allergic to milk, and have to have soy forumla. You don't want to be stuck with a bunch of formula you can't use. It will probably be a lot of trial and error. If you want to stock up do things like breast pads, pass for period, baby wash/lotion, baby detergent
  • I'd wait till baby gets here. You'll most likely get plenty from friends/family to start. With my first we started with pampers which were great but I found luvs to be just as good for a bit cheaper. Plus I learned pretty quickly that the wet indicator on the pampers really isn't necessary. (And that makes them cost more!) We'll probably do pampers the first few months and switch to luvs again.

Had some samples of huggies that didn't seem to fit as well but had no issues with leaks or anything.

  • I have honestly never heard of a store not accepting exchanges of diapers (as long as they are unopened). I have to disagree and say that I think it's a great idea to shop for diapers here and there when you find sales to take the financial burden off when baby arrives. Not to mention when you run out in the middle of the night you already have another pack. I do like the gift card idea though!
  • I stockpiled last time and it wasn't a horrible idea. I was told that moms of girls often prefer Pampers, and moms of boys often prefer Huggies. Who knows if that's true but that's what I went by. But I had a ton of Huggies snug and dry piled for my son, and ended up hating those and using Huggies little snugglers. It depends on your child's shape and sensitivity. I agree with ^. If you do stock pile, tape the receipts or a note about what store you bought them from to the packages for future exchange.

  • We plan on using a cloth diaper service, but I've already started sewing diaper covers. Apparently if you put a bunch of snaps on them they can be used from newborn onward, but now I'm wondering if I shouldn't just wait until the kid gets here and buy pre-made covers online or something. I know we're holding off on buying a stroller because my little sister hated the stroller so much (25 year age difference)... I guess what I'm trying to say is what everyone else is saying... Don't stockpile too much. Just wait until the baby is here and figure out what works/makes sense then.

Can I just put out there.. don't be afraid to try different than the usual huggies and pampers. I have the most sensitive skin ever and didn't want to risk my kid have reactions to the junk and scents in those. I loved earths best brand of diapers as well as honest company. Just a friendly food for thought. Also I'll add my daughter has had diaper rash twice in her two years and I felt the diapers free of chlorine n scents really helped with that.
  • Good question! I am a first time mom also and we are planning to start buying diapers with each paycheck. I'm thinking we will alternate between sizes like one -week newborn and the next week whatever size comes next (FTM so not sure what that is!). This way in case we get a lot from showers etc. we will have enough sizes.

  • This is all really great info. Thank you!!
  • We always have stockpiled. With my first we did a diaper drive at our baby shower and walked away with enough diapers to not need to buy more for 7months or so, once we figured out with brand worked for us (pampers) we exchanged all of the other brands/sizes at Walmart no problem. With our second we got super lucky and got this amazing deal on Amazon and we pretty much bought a full years of diapers for less than what we would have paid for a months worth in stores! We don't think we will be able to get such a great deal again, but if we do we will scoop them all up. I highly recommend not buying a lot of "newborn" size diapers, most babies fly through them, and some come out too big for them.
  • We stockpile too. Most stores, Walmart for sure, exchange diapers without receipts. If you decide to, don't buy too many newborn sizes as most babies don't use that size long. I have two boxes of size 1 already and will get two of size 2 next. Formula is not a good idea because of sensitivities like you suggested.

  • Maybe go a head and put money back to buy diapers. The brand you stockpile, may not work for your LO. With my girls I loved huggies. They were both in the 20-30 percentile on weight and they worked great. There was/is rarely a leak or blow out. However for my nephew, who is on the chubbier side and is in the 90 percentile on weight, they always blow out and leak.
  • If you're going to attempt this one this I suggest is you register for the diapers then buy them from your registry. That gives you a year to return them if you don't like them. I would say I went though around 3 cases in size 1,2 and 3 then 4 cases in size 4. My kid is now 15 months in size 5. If this gives you an idea of how much you need. I also switched to target brand from pampers and that's a money saver. Good luck.
