Working @ 9 months Pregnant!

My due date is Thurs. Jan 29th. Right now, I'm scheduled to work until the 30th, assuming that baby doesn't come sooner. I'm SO done with work. I'm uncomfortable, it's hard to get out of bed, people are getting annoying, and my commute sucks!

Are you / did you work up until your due date? If baby comes late are you going to work past that until your water breaks or labor starts? My work is about 1 hour from the hospital. I think my HR Manager assumes that I'm gonna work up until I go into labor. I just wanna see what everyone is planning on doing. Thanks!!!

  • With DD1, I had a c-section scheduled for a Wednesday (due to her being breech), and I worked till the Friday before. I had a RCS scheduled this time for January 10th, and planned to work till the 9th. I decided to start my maternity leave on 12/29 because I was so uncomfortable, and in California, you can get paid for 4 weeks before, so I took advantage. Thank god I did, because I went into labor on January 2nd and had her that day!

  • Baby is due next monday and I plan to go until she pops out.  I can have up to 4 weeks before without affecting after, but I would rather keep the money.  I'm not uncomfortable, I just hate the comments.  Though it's fun to see their faces in meetings when I say i'm having a contraction :)

  • I am due on the 27th and am still working. I plan to make this Friday my last day so I'll be 39w 3d on my last work day unless baby decides to arrive before that(which would be great.)

  • I worked until 40w6d. I was scheduled for prostin gel the next day followed by induction so I essentially worked up until delivery.

  • Due the 30th also.  Plan on working until/beyond due date.  Luckily my job is pretty flexible on hours so I can come in late or leave early if I'm feeling really bad.  Also DH works from home and has decided I'm not allowed to drive myself, so I get picked up/dropped off at my door instead of walking from the garage.  That has been really nice when the wind chill is below 0.

  • I'm just shy of 40 weeks over here and it blows but I'm still working because I'm trying to keep my clients happy so that I don't feel guilty when I take off time after the baby comes.

  • I literally worked until he was ready to come out. I was due the 18th. Scheduled mat leave to begin the 14th, and baby was born the 8th. I worked full 8 hours on the 8th and he was born 6 hours later. I was about 75% prepared workwise. :/ I was banking on 3 more days of work. Oops.

  • I'm due on the 31st, working right up until I go in. My office is a 15min walk from home, and it can be flexible if I need it to.
I really like having the distraction of work. Otherwise I'd be staying home being anxious about everything.
  • I'm due on Saturday the 24th and I'm still working. Will prob keep driving in until Friday (around 30 mile commute each way) and then (if he's not born yet) I'll keep working full time, but just work from home until he is - that way I'm not risking driving with contractions. Is working from home an option for you?
  • I'm due the 31st and last day will be the 23rd. I'm so over work and the constant BH's are starting to make me really uncomfortable so I'm glad to be almost done. Also, the comments are starting to really annoy me :)

  • I am due on the 27th and my last day of work is the 23rd. I did not want to give a date but was sort of guilted into it by my department manager due to making the schedule. I get to work at 6 am and am on my feet all day and it really sucks, but I don't want to spend any of my short 6 weeks off without my little boy. I feel stuck.
  • I worked until I went into labor, had a bad cold the whole week before so I worked from home the last two days in hopes of feeling better.
  • I'm due on the 30th and this Friday is my last official week of being an essential employee. Technically next week I won't need to be there but am welcome if I feel like coming in. I like the flexibility it gives me because there are days I feel great and days I feel horrible
  • I regret not working closer to my due date. I should have tried working up until a week before or so...
  • @bpzeiler‌ - I wish I could work from home but unfortunately it's not an option for me.

Our policies are pretty lame and I don't have any paid maternity leave. I can take up to six months off with my job protected but I have to use my accrued sick and vacation time (I only have 2 weeks right now). I plan to take a total of 7 weeks off work so most of it will be unpaid. :(

  • Working 12 hour shifts in a large hospital that's high stress I really was hoping I may endure it up to delivery. The past weekend was harder than usual on my body. I had high blood pressure, my face was turning different colors, I felt bad. I just new that it was the right decision to go out a week and a half early. I've been able to get things in order at home, rest, reflect and complete coursework for my continuing ed in advance to her arrival. I hope that I will be able to approach labor and delivery with energy and positivity because of this. At the end of the day...I might have to sacrifice some pay but it is worth so much to have positive memories around bringing baby into the world.

  • I'm still working, and plan to until baby makes his/her appearance! I'm definitely tired of all the "you're still here??" and terrified looks like the babys just going to fall out at any moment haha.

I also am not delivering at the hospital I work at and people are incredulous that if my water broke at work I would still go to the other hospital (only 15 min away!) instead of staying and delivering there. Some people have even gone so far as to say they "wouldn't let me leave"... Umm not your call, thanks though :) if we worked in an office and my water broke, I'd be traveling to a hospital and not delivering my baby at work, so what's the difference??
  • I worked all day and had the baby later that night. I didn't think I was in labor and thought it would stop. At 10:30 I went home because it was becoming more uncomfortable to work from the office but I continued to work while at home. When I probably should have gotten my bag packed I was on a conference call.

  • I'm 40 weeks and 1 day, and I'm still working.  My husband (who is from Germany) is having an absolute cow about it, too, because in Germany the women have to take six weeks (paid) before their due date - he says it's mandatory - and then for leave they get one year (paid) after the baby is born (they get up to two more years without pay, but their job is protected).  So he just doesn't get it that I can't do as German women do and still have a job!!

It's kind of causing an issue between my husband and me because he thinks it's dangerous for me to be out and about this pregnant (it's snowing and slippery where I live) but what can I do? We don't live in Germany...
  • @rwisley-  While I wish the US had much better maternity policies I can't get behind forcing people to stop work 6 weeks before the baby.  This may be good for some people but I would go crazy.  I still feel good most days and I enjoy being productive.   I can't imagine my state of mind if I had to sit at home being with nothing to do for 6 weeks.  My anxiety would actually go up!

It would be really nice if all of the policies were TRULLY flexible.  Like you can take the 6 weeks before or not.  And you don't get pressure or looked down on either way.  I'm getting both sides from co-workers.  The "What your are only taking 6-8 weeks off after baby?  You should take the whole 12 weeks."  or "Well you could just stop in for a couple hours for this really important meeting 2 weeks post-baby".  I know people aren't trying to make me feel worse but all of the advice and opinions just make me more anxious.  I need to do what is right for me and my family without pressure!

  • I due Febr 25th (a Wednesday) and plan on working until Feb 20th (a Friday). I haven't had any issues with working. Today has been the first day that I felt like I absolutely want to be at home resting!! But everyone has those days even non-preggos right?? Eh, we will see if I make it 4 more wks.

  • I'm working the rest of this week which takes me to 40 weeks. I can stop/start again whenever I want, but since I'm self-employed I don't get paid when I don't work. I'm planning on taking 7 weeks of leave with this little guy like I did with my son. But, I don't work full time. Just every other morning. I realize everything would be more difficult if I worked full time.

  • I was due the first January 18th and my last day in the office was January 16th. I've considered going in this week since I haven't had baby yet but my coworkers would be so nervous :P
  • I'm due 2/1 and I'm scheduled until 1/31. None of my leave is paid so I want every penny I can get right now. I agree....its hard as hell. I'm on my feet all day and can't perform a lot of things I need to anymore bit still get asked out of habit. Plus I'm up every 2hrs so sleep doesn't exist.

  • I work in a hospital and I stopped 2 weeks ago. My induction is one week from today. It was just too much so I'm at home resting and nesting.
  • We are officially at our due date, 40 weeks today and beginning this last Tuesday I started working from home. I will continue to do so until she arrives. It's nice to have a flexible work environment where I can stay home. Our hospital is 20 minutes away and my husband is 10 minutes away at his work. So I feel much better being at home, working.
  • I finished up all the work on my desk on a Friday, at 39 weeks and 3 days. I made a deal with myself that if I were still pregnant Monday, I would come in and do enough work to maintain my clear desk, but everything after that Friday was just maintenence. I didn't make it to Monday. My water broke Saturday morning.
  • Tomorrow is my last day and I'm so happy it's over. I don't really want to talk about being "still" pregnant with my coworkers anymore.

I really wouldn't mind doing my job until baby comes. I just can't handle these people up my ass with all the intrusive questions anymore.

  • @WormyGo - I'm with you, the "mandatory" thing is weird (if true...who knows...he's a guy after all) and I would probably lose it if I had to stay home a full six weeks before.

In the meantime, the work at my office is just piling on...no clue how I'm going to do this maternity leave thing.  I'm beyond my due date, still here, and I have more work than I can handle. And my doc just scheduled me to be induced Monday or Tuesday of next week.  Ugh.

YESSS!! Soooo annoying!! They are the reason women start leave early. When I'm not pregnant anymore is when I've had my baby!
  • I planned to work up until my due date, but moved up my maternity leave twice and finally covered my last two shifts. I'm 65lbs heavier than I was 9 months ago and my job involves standing, squatting with heavy objects, and being nice to innocent customers... all of that was becoming impossible! I'm so glad I stopped. Have been getting a lot done here at home and am impatiently waiting for my son to join me here!
  • Working right up until my little peanut decides she wants out! I am due 1/25, and will work until I either go into labor or have to be induced. I work full time for a medical company and the job is very demanding/high stress; I would've loved to go out a few days early but need to work as much as I can so as to save money & not lose out on my FMLA days. I was also waitressing part time in the ski town we live in, but stopped in November because it was far too physically demanding with winter tourism picking up and working 40 hours at my other job. While I'm glad to know I'm not the only one hanging on for the long haul, it's discouraging that we are so limited by our leave options at this day in age!
