Fundal height ??

im almost 38 weeks & at my prenatal appointment today my fundal height was smaller then last week and I lost one pound so the doctor wants me sent for an ultrasound. Just wondering if anyone else experienced this and if it's an issue or I'm just worked up for nothing ??

Re: Fundal height ??

  • She just said she wants to make sure everything's fine but she's sure that it is, just worries me that's all

  • I've heard that weight loose is actually normal as you get closer to your due date. With the baby's pressure on your stomach you take in less food.

  • If your doctor isn't worried, I wouldn't be worried.
  • Your Dr. is probably just being cautious and taking a look. I read that was common though to lose weight towards the end. I will find out tomorrow but I can tell that I have dropped and my bump seems smaller now that it is lower. Maybe I am just imaging things though. haha. But anyhow, I'd ask your Dr. if he/she is concerned but it is likely nothing.

  • I also read weight loss is common towards the end. Ive been stuck at same weight for almost a month so im a little nervous about my appointment tomorrow. Gl!
  • I lost two pounds at my last visit (36 weeks) and my doctor wasn't concerned. I also read that your fundal height drops at the end due to the baby dropping lower.

Yup, this!! Fundal doesnt really give them a lot of information, so to be on the safe side if your measurements dont line up, they will recommend an ultrasound. Im the opposite of you (measuring large) and they have sent me for an US every 4 weeks just to monitor whats happening with babys growth. It gives them clues and indicators of other things that could be an issue. But unless they are concerned about something specific right now, I would just chalk it up as another chance to see LO.

  • I'm glad to read these responses as after gaining 4 pounds during Christmas week (whoops), I've gone back and forth 2-3 pounds without really gaining beyond what I was late last month. My OB isn't concerned. I just make sure I'm getting enough protein every day.

  • She didn't seem very concerned and must not be if she isn't rushing me in for an ultrasound. She claims the baby's head is still high but I honestly feel that the baby has dropped. Thanks everyone for the advice :)
  • Fundal height isn't exact. It can be determined by babies position at any given time. Like others have said, if doc isn't worried you shouldn't be either.

  • Pretty similar to you. My fundal height hasn't changed for three weeks and I lost 4 lbs. My midwife wasn't concerned and neither was I because the baby was kicking and being as active as normal. I went for an ultrasound last week and everything was fine and dandy. I hope yours is too!
  • My OB told me it's common for women to actually lose a few pounds the last few weeks before labor. I am measuring about 3-4 cm smaller but she said that's from baby dropping. So if you dropped then that could be it. Don't worry unless your doctor does.
  • Fundal height can be very inaccurate and a one pound weight loss is not a cause for alarm. If doc isn't concerned, I wouldn't be either!

  • Thanks for the reassurance everyone
  • Did the doctor say you're being sent for the u/s because of the weight loss and decrease in fundal height? Because, as others have said, those are common late in pregnancy, and some doctors have a late u/s as a standard screen. They could actually be unrelated.

I've had pretty consistent growth u/s but my fundal height has never been mentioned (my doctor has consistently measured it, though). I've never thought much of it since it can vary so much. Then again, I'm tall and my doctor has told me that I have a long torso so that could have made a difference in that as well.
  • I lost a pound & they scheduled me for an ultrasound also at 33 weeks but I had also been sick for a week with no appetite. Went back at 35 weeks to get ultrasound had lost 4 more pounds but baby was 5lbs & 11oz. So don't stress it, I'm sure baby is growing fine. On the bright side we will be back to our regular sizes in no time :) be blessed mama
  • My little one was measuring two weeks ahead, so they did an ultrasound to "check and see" and everything was healthy and well. Just a precaution, I am sure, but make sure you are calling and asking questions if you are in doubt!
  • My FH had gone down two weeks ago at my last appointment so I got sent for an ultrasound last week and it turns out everything was fine and baby is in the 74th percentile for growth at this point. I hope everything is fine for you too!

  • *Just a little update*
I got the results back. Everything was perfectly fine with the exception of his femral bone (the one from your knee up) measure slightly small I guess. They assure me it's perfectly fine and the doctor didn't even schedule for another ultrasound. I guess it could be just as simple as the baby isn't going to be really long. It can lead to a diagnosis if this happens early on which is that the placenta doesn't give the baby the right amount of nutrients causes growth restriction. But with me being so close they don't see it as a threat
