Exercise in the first trimester??

Hey ladies,

How are you guys staying energized enough to make time for the gym?? I really want to stay fit and healthy through the pregnancy because I know it's better for both me and baby, but gosh between the exhaustion and the nausea I just can't fathom the gym. I've been taking my gym clothes with me to work every day and then driving right by it on my way home. lol. Suggestions?!

Re: Exercise in the first trimester??

  • I'm currently 4 wks pregnant. I have been active before conceiving. At times I just dont feel like going but once I'm there my energy kicks in. I guess just get in there and start. It's getting to the gym that is the struggle. Haha
nothing to it but to do it :)

  • I'm wondering the same thing every week I am hoping to gain more energy since I was very active before pregnancy but I'm just happy if I finish my day and get done housework done!
  • I'm feeling the same way @bhaley44 I was super active before but now as long as I have clean clothes and clean dishes in my house that's about all I can manage. lol. My pants are already getting tight on my thighs and I'm like NOOO!! It's too soon! lol
  • I know this is not how I thought it would be lol

I used to go 6 days a week doing cardio & weights, and since about 4 weeks (I'm 7 weeks 4 days now) I've been giving myself a break. Going 5 days a week, limiting my time to about 45 minutes to an hour. I just listen to my body, when it says rest, I rest and when it says sleep, I sleep! Set small goals for yourself that are attainable and if you need to adjust them, do it! Take advantage of those high energy days, good luck!

    Edit: spelling, post nap!
  • I hear you! I'm trying also and am having a hard time even making my "step goal" on my VivoFit :(:( I have a book called Fit in 15 for quick 15 minute strength and flexibility workouts to do at home, trying to walk (and play volleyball when I can) and I'm thinking of joining a prenatal yoga class.
I sound ambitious, as I lay here on the couch in a ball, trying not to get sick. But I managed to get the arm workout in earlier :)

  • With DD, I really couldn't make it to the gym until the 2nd tri, when my energy levels were somewhat back to normal. Hang in there, you'll get your energy back!

  • lillyzzay You're doing way better than me. lol
  • Does anyone feel pain in their pelvic area, like cramping, after exercising??? I don't think pushed myself too hard at all today and I started having cramps afterwards
  • I just got some PiYo dvd that are low impact yoga and pilates moves. It's awesome! No jumping either. And most videos are only 30 minutes.

    I haven't.

I take spinning classes regularly. Even sitting down for the majority of the class, I only lasted 20 mins because I was nauseous. As of now, walking on the treadmill is my go too.
  • I'm having a hard time getting the energy to workout as well. After working my butt off to lose the 60 pounds I gained with the DD, I refuse to go back to that nightmare again! I actually found a "What to Expect When Expecting" workout DVD on Amazon. I'm using it at home until the weather gets warm enough to be active outside.

I've been working out 5-6 times per week pretty much exclusively doing 30 minutes on the elliptical and some light arm weights. I have done some pretty tame ab workouts too and it feels fine but I still feel like it's wierd or bad to do ab workouts....even though I've read it's ok in the first tri. I try to work out first thing in the morning when I still have lots of energy.
  • My trick is signing up for gym classes for the whole week over the weekend when I still feel motivated. Then it's scheduled into my day and I feel obligated to go since I'm signed up. It helps since If I wait until after work to see how I feel I know the answer is going to be too tired.
  • I have been working out for a while. I actually stepped it up last month.

I am always tired, but can't sleep through the entire night most of the time. I go to Zumba 3 times a week and work out on my own another day a week. I don't get all fancy with the moves like I used to in Zumba, but I am still getting a great work out and it helps me sleep through the whole night.

I do. All I did was some yoga and a 3 mile walk. Now just like you I'm in pain. (And my friend's unexpected low bear hug just made it worse.)
  • Oh, and next month I will sign-up at my old college pool.
  • I'm lucky if I have the energy to make dinner and do laundry by the time I get home from work. I was active prior to BFP and the worst part is that when I look out my front door I can see my gym. It's like the little voice in my head that knows what I should be doing. Hoping to get back soon.
  • I've been going to a personal trainer since September and am continuing to go for as long as possible. It was the only way to keep my butt at the gym.
  • Great. I feel so ashamed after reading all of your comments! Lol I just don't have it in me to go! Between feeling nauseous every other hour to feeling exhausted I don't know how I am going to get to the gym. I am looking into pregnancy yoga classes and investing in arm weights for the house so I can just do quick workouts at home.
  • I've been going to a trainer since November, 3 times a week and we do some pretty intense workouts- mostly weight lifting, plyometrics, and circuit routines. I haven't seen my OB yet so I haven't had the chance to ask if it's ok to continue doing intense workouts or if I should tell my trainer I am pregnant and maybe tone it down in some areas. We haven't told anyone yet, thoughts??
  • I'm in a similar place, meg11287. I chose to tell my trainer in case anything happened and so he would know why I wasn't going quite as all out. I let him know it's very early and we haven't told anyone yet. I feel like he is a health care provider in a way and therefore ought to know.

  • meg11287 Definitely tell your trainer so that he/she can modify your workouts as needed. My trainer was actually one of the first people I told lol. Thankfully he is certified in prenatal training as well and my workouts haven't changed too much. No more jumping, shorter periods of high intensity and longer breaks in between sets are the biggest differences.

I always drag myself into the gym feeling exhausted and sick and leave feeling tired but amazing. Its worth the push to work out I think unless your body really says NO

  • Thanks hlb8179! That's helpful to know someone is in the same position, I will tell him just that as well! I was thinking the same thing in terms of him looking out for my well being and baby as well.
  • I go because I get 2 hours to myself lol! It's actually less energy to go on a machine or take a class than it is to run after my kids! Plus I get a shower!

  • I do ballroom dancing and I love it so much that even though I have much less energy, i still go because I love it so much. I also take Bar Method - which is so great because they have modifications for pregnancy so you can do it well into the third trimester.

  • Omg, just thinking about the gym makes me more tired than I already am! haha. I'm lucky getting out to walk my neighborhood a few times! :)
  • If I don't work out in the morning before work, it's not happening. By the time I get home I could and sometimes do fall asleep on the couch. I've been pretty consistent but there are days (like today) that I don't have it in me. I'm not going to beat myself up over it though... I'll just workout over the weekend to make up for it.
  • I was running quite a bit before I found out I was pregnant. I found if I can get past the feeling of exhaustion, a quick jog or walk really gives me an energy boost and helps with the fatigue.
  • Definitely tell your trainer! They need to know so they can keep you and the baby safe.
