Prayers Please

I have been having pretty bad heart palpitations... So my doctor wanted me to get an EKG and a sonogram on my heart. Well I went today, and while the tech was doing the sonogram she said "are you a smoker?" I said I used to... But I would I have one pack and it would last me a couple of months, so I wasn't a huge smoker, but I did smoke occasionally... some time passes and she says "so how many years did you smoke?..." I said well I don't even think I did that for a full year... I really only did it for a couple months here and there... (Knowing she wouldn't be able to tell me anything) I then asked if something was wrong. She said she wasn't aloud to say and that the doctor will call me with my results later... I said okay & then we proceeded with the sonogram. Literally TWO MINUTES went by and she says "so how many cigarettes would you say you smoked within those couple of months" at this point I'm extremely annoyed. I DONT KNOW. One pack of cigarettes lasted me about 2-3 months!!! I asked one last time IS THERE A PROBLEM!? And she said "hun im not aloud to give any information that's the doctors job" well HOW am I not supposed to be stressed out after you asked the same type of question a billion times all the while looking at my heart! Please just keep me in your thoughts and prayers that it turns out to be nothing, or at least nothing serious

That's very scary! I'm so sorry you are going through this right now! I would be out of my mind. Hopefully the doctor gets in touch with you quickly and everything is okay. Praying this is just a scare! FX'd. Hugs.

When I went in for my first appt they asked if I smoked and I did but I was cutting down and was down to three a day which is amazing for me. Nurse went right outside my door and told doc I was lying and made up a god number. I was pissed!!!!!! I didn't say anything but I should have. I'm still upset.

Wow that's kinda rude on her part.. Like you want to have a one way conversation. I hope she was just being dramatic and it's really something minor.

I also had a terrible experience with an EKG and sonogram tech last year when I was having palpitations! He was very rough (the whole thing was excruciating, I had bruises all over my boobs after) and kept saying "you're very young to be having these kinds of tests" and clucking his tongue. WTF dude!

My problems were likely stress/anxiety related and resolved on their own, but it was a scary few months of not knowing what was going on. I am praying for you to get the all-clear!

I'm not going to lie I have been extremely stressed. So I am hoping that's all it is. I can't believe that you had bruses on you! Id be so upset!!

Pretty rude. I don't think it's her job to capture your medical history and comment on it. That would be your doctor's job... just do the damn test! Sorry you're lef tin limbo. Thinking of you.

Wow, I am so sorry that happened. I don't work in the medical field, but it seems like, if she was a sono tech, those shouldn't be questioned she should be asking. Isn't that already in your record with your doctor?

I hope your results come back perfect. I also hope that if they don't, you don't, for one second, blame this on yourself for that amount of smoking.

Yeah as far as I knew my doctor knows I used to smoke here and there. That was like one of the first questions when I had gotten pregnant was if I smoked. To which my response was I used to every couple months and the last pack I had was back in June/July so it had been two months since I've smoked. So why the tech kept pressing it is beyond me, which is why I got so stressed about it even more. Thank you so much for your thoughts. I hope all is still proceeding well with you!!!

I'm an x-ray tech, and even though I currently work in a Carfiac Cath Lab (where Dr. gives info right after the procedure), I remember the days of trying to gather info from a patient for the Dr. to make a diagnosis and then not being able to tell the pt. anything. Please know they (nurse, ultrasound tech, etc.) are just trying to do their job. Usually EKG's and x-ray's, etc. are read by radiologists or other doctors that only have your medical record and the info. provided them by the tech to go off of.

I hate how ultrasound techs can't give any information. I understand they cannot diagnose a problem, but I think they should be allowed to just say that there is something different but the doctor will diagnose and explain. Thoughts with you and hope that nothing is seriously wrong!

I also think that ultrasound techs should shut their mouths!! They know they can't tell you anything so they also should not be able to ask questions. Is there are specific question she thinks are pertinent then she needs to leave them for the doctor. So not right to let you leave worrying like crazy only to WAIT to hear back from the dr. Praying everything is ok! Keep us updated!
