Any and all suggestions for fighting off the flu or flu-like virus!

Hi friends...

So, in the few hours that have passed since my TTT this morning, I have gone from sore throat to sore throat, headache, chills and body aches! Fantastic.

I have not been legit sick (like stay home, in bed, non-functional, sick day sick in a super long time. I think it has been at least 6-7 years...). I want to try everything humanly possible to not get full-blown sick, or at least minimize symptoms and help this crap move out of my system quickly.

I am not one for natural remedies usually, so I don't know any of the recommendations... please share with me anything and everything you would do to try to stop the flu or a flu-like virus from hitting full force and lasting a long time. I want to hear EVERYTHING. Jump on one foot, take a bottle of Nyquil, eat a gallon of honey mixed with garlic, eat guacamole... (I am making stuff up here), but I am willing to literally try every possible remedy to avoid full-on illness.

Bonus points if you have tips on keeping J and Will healthy (I pray the answer isn't total isolation... I am feeling weepy already and the thought of not seeing my baby for a couple of days while I lock myself in a room makes me want to lose it!).

Thanks, friends.

If you think it's the flu you should get tested right away.  They can give you temiflu but there is a small window for when it works.  I think it needs to be taken within 24 hours of dx.

    Good luck!

Thanks, I have truly no idea if it is really the early stages of the flu. I am not sure I have ever actually had it, and certainly not as an adult. I literally just started feeling sick over the course of the last few hours. I had a scratchy throat at around 7am, but the rest hit between 11am-1pm. I am trying to be proactive! I feel like a bit of a crazy lady to call my Dr and say - I haven't felt well for 2 hours or so...  ugh! WHY!?!?!?!

Tamiflu will shorten your illness and reduce the severity if it is the flu, but like @karlamo said you have to take it early.

I hear ya.  The flu is awful this year.  R got tested last week and it's just a simple nose swab and we got results in 10 min.  His was negative btw.

I'm at my dr's office! I called and they said if I could get here in 10 mins they would see me. I threw my laptop in my bag grabbed my coat and literally ran 4 block, but I made it! Fever is 99.8, which is high for me. Waiting for dr. Thank you all so much for pushing me to do this! I am usually way more stubborn. Being a mom has changed this lady like woah!!!

I'm a bit crunchy and not a fan of tamiflu, but some people swear by it. My go to natural remedies are elderberry syrup/sambuka (it's sold at cvs/Walgreens, ect) virattack (liquid found at a natural foods store) and garlic (pills or you can eat the whole clove) Drink lots of water and J can take the elderberry as a prevention also.

Dr thinks it is either flu or a flu-like virus. She put us all on tamiflu (J and Will preventitively). They swabbed me for flu and I should know tomorrow AM if that's what it is. She said flu shot (which we all got) is only 23% effective this year. Yay!

Another flu victim here!  Yesterday I had a cough and sore throat and assumed I had caught B's cold.  At night all of a sudden I had body aches, chills, and a 100.8 degree fever.  I could NOT get warm enough and went to bed with extra covers, a sweatshirt on, and the heat jacked up in our bedroom...then woke up sweating at midnight.  So much fun.  Went to urgent care today and got a positive flu test.  I'm going on Tamiflu and we are waiting to hear from pedi and my wife's PCP on whether they should be on it too.  The doctor wasn't 100% sold on the efficacy of Tamiflu but thought it was better to go on it with a young baby in the house.  I stayed home with him all day yesterday (because of his ear infection, not my "cold" symptoms) so I am convinced I gave it to him.  He's at daycare today so for now, we're separated and I can get some rest.

FWIW, @KH826, the flu comes on really fast -- it's not crazy to call and say you have had symptoms for 2 hours!  Was your test positive or negative?

Still don't know if I have the actual flu, but I spiked a 102+ fever last night. I woke up at 11pm completely soaked. I seem to be doing much better today, but I'm working from home again today so as not to spread the ick. Several folks at my work have tested positive for flu.

Also a proponent of being proactive and nipping it in the bud!

Ugh! @ball.and.chain - I am so sorry! I hope you get some rest and start feeling better. This is awful stuff!

I still don't know if what I have is the flu. I am so annoyed! I had the test at 4pm on Tuesday at my dr's office and the dr told me to check the online portal on Wednesday AM for the results. After checking continuously yesterday, with no results posted, I called my dr's office yesterday at 2pm. The receptionist took a message and said a nurse would call me with my results (which she could see, but couldn't tell me, since she was not a nurse). Ok, fine. I waited until 4:45pm yesterday, and I still had not received a call back, so I called again. A different receptionist answered and was super rude. She told me that their policy was to return a call within 48 hours, and I had call less than 3 hours before. I explained I was only looking for a quick yes or no as to the result of my flu test and it would only take 20 seconds for a nurse to look at my chart and give me the results. She directed me to the online portal. I told her I had been checking there all day, and no results were posted yet. She said I had to wait up to 48 hours to get a call back and that was all she could do and hung up. That was yesterday at 4:45pm. Still no call, and still no results posted in the portal. Meanwhile, we are all still on Tamiflu. I am slowly starting to feel better, but have no idea if that is the Tamiflu working or just the rest, fluids and OTC stuff I am also taking.

I had chills and sweats the last two nights as well. Still have a mega sore throat. The body aches come and go, as does the headache. Overall, I don't feel quite like death warmed over anymore, but still definitely not myself. Yesterday I took a legit sick day, today I am working from home.. tomorrow I have no choice but to go to work, so here is hoping a combo of the Tamiflu and everything else makes me feel functional by then!

    So sorry you are sick!!!

M and I are still sick, though I'm feeling a lot better. Poor M woke up Tues and Wed with his eyes stuck shut with goop. We went to the Dr. yesterday and got eye antibiotics and an oral after he got a fever yesterday evening. Poor kid was miserable. Dr. said it's not the flu, I didn't think it was, just a really icky head cold. I'm glad we made it to 7 months without an illness, I hope we make it a loooong time until the next one.
